  • Addictive 'one-more-room' gameplay loop that can be surprisingly soothing once you get used to the combat rhythm.
  • Offers a challenging roguelike experience with a simple, straightforward dungeon-crawling mechanic.
  • Includes unique features such as taming certain enemies and mini-games like fishing, adding some diversity to gameplay.
  • Combat is often sluggish, clumsy, and unresponsive, with issues in attack mechanics and blocking that frustrate players.
  • Visuals and audio are repetitive, simplistic, and fail to enhance immersion or create a compelling atmosphere.
  • Progression is grind-heavy and unevenly balanced with little narrative or character development, reducing long-term engagement.
  • graphics

    19 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The graphics of the game feature a 3D pixel art style that blends retro and modern elements, which some players find charming while others see as repetitive or simplistic. While the visuals are generally passable and fitting for a roguelike experience, criticisms point to reused assets, limited enemy design, and a monotonous atmosphere. Overall, the graphics are neither a standout strength nor the primary issue, as gameplay shortcomings overshadow visual aspects.

    • “+ nice graphics, I'm a fool for blocky styles”
    • “Great graphics.”
    • “Visually, Neverend adopts a 3D pixel art style, aiming to balance retro charm with modern design, but the result is mixed.”
    • “While the concept promises tension and strategic decision-making, execution issues in gameplay, visuals, and progression hinder the overall experience.”
    • “Combined, the visuals and audio contribute to a monotonous atmosphere that fails to capitalize on the potential creepiness or excitement of exploring an unknown, perilous dimension.”
    • “While the idea of navigating endless dungeons, taming enemies, and surviving against increasingly dangerous foes has potential, the game is hindered by clunky combat, repetitive visuals, and lackluster progression.”
  • gameplay

    19 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay attempts to deliver strategic, roguelike dungeon exploration with combat and gear upgrades, but is widely criticized for sluggish, unresponsive controls, poor combat mechanics, and unbalanced progression. Repetitive, uninspired dungeon design and lack of engaging narrative or character development result in a monotonous experience that fails to maintain player interest. Overall, the gameplay is considered frustrating, buggy, and dull, significantly undermining the game's potential.

    • “The gameplay centers on exploring randomly generated dungeons, combating a variety of enemies, and upgrading gear to improve survivability.”
    • “It plays like The Binding of Isaac - the gameplay loop here is you start in a dungeon with basic equipment and progress through randomized rooms, mostly killing monsters before they kill you, while hoping to find a shopkeeper to upgrade or buy new weapons, making yourself stronger until you reach different bosses.”
    • “The game's core mechanics of moving, attacking, and blocking don’t feel good, which undermines the overall gameplay experience.”
    • “While the concept promises tension and strategic decision-making, execution issues in gameplay, visuals, and progression hinder the overall experience.”
    • “However, despite this potential, the game’s combat mechanics are often criticized for being sluggish and unresponsive.”
    • “Progression and gameplay balance are additional areas where the game struggles.”
  • music

    9 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music in the game is generally considered repetitive, minimal, and quickly becomes tiresome, failing to enhance the atmosphere or tension. Many users find the soundtrack boring and annoying, contributing to an overall lackluster audio experience.

    • “I relaxed for 5 minutes listening to this music, long enough to realize that I would be okay.”
    • “The graphics and music are passable, not really a big deal either way, but the gameplay is not very good.”
    • “The audio design similarly falls short: the soundtrack is minimal and looped, with sound effects that fail to convey the tension or impact of combat.”
    • “The soundtrack gets really old really quick.”
    • “The soundtrack is repetitive and annoying.”
  • story

    4 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The story is generally viewed as lacking depth and cohesion, with some noting an absence of meaningful plot or level design in favor of repetitive procedural generation. While one game attempts to present a narrative, it is often seen as disconnected from the gameplay. Overall, the story aspect is considered weak or minimal by users.

    • “Moral of the story: you never know what life has in store for you, and if I had given up when all odds were against me, I wouldn't be where I am today.”
    • “The game features no proper level design or game/story flow/plot, as they opted to try to use samey repetitive procedural generation algorithms as a substitute for adding such content to the game, avoiding the important job of level/map design.”
    • “Neverend at least pretends to have a story, even if it isn’t reflected in the gameplay at all.”
    • “Just like Binding of Isaac but without story and costs 2 €.”
  • monetization

    2 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The monetization of Neverend is heavily criticized as a blatant cash grab, with the game appearing to prioritize quick profit over quality, featuring poorly made content and suspicious fake reviews aimed at boosting sales on Steam.
