The gameplay of "Mullet Madjack" is characterized by its fast-paced, addictive mechanics that blend roguelite elements with a retro aesthetic, reminiscent of classic shooters like "Doom" and "Hotline Miami." Players engage in a frenetic loop where quick reflexes and strategic kills are essential to extend their limited time, creating a thrilling sense of urgency. However, while the core gameplay is enjoyable and visually striking, some reviewers noted a lack of variety and depth, leading to potential repetitiveness over longer play sessions.
“The gameplay demands quick reflexes and strategic thinking as you race against the clock, keeping you on your toes throughout each level.”
“The gameplay loop is incredibly addictive, the roguelite elements keep things from getting stale and with every level taking a minute or less to beat it lends itself so well to that 'one more round' mentality for me.”
“Mullet Madjack is a fantastic fusion of the adrenaline rush hyper-violent gameplay of Hotline Miami and classic FPS gameplay, all wrapped in a delightful 80s/90s anime OVA aesthetic.”
“However, it’s worth noting that the gameplay can become repetitive over time, which may affect long-term enjoyment.”
“The gameplay is horridly shallow and the more interesting gameplay-altering upgrades (such as the grappling hook or environment items) fall short because the game wasn't built to accommodate them.”
“The amazing art and presentation can't hide that the gameplay loop gets stale quite fast, as you're rushing through the same randomly connected map modules, with the same object and enemy placement.”

Players appreciate the detailed environments, fluid animations, and the overall artistic direction that enhances the fast-paced gameplay, creating an immersive experience reminiscent of classic anime. While some note that the visuals can be overwhelming during intense action sequences, the game's unique style and nostalgic charm are consistently highlighted as standout features.
“The art style is engaging, with attention to detail that adds to the overall experience.”
“It goes without saying, but the animations and art style are absolutely gorgeous, with every last pixel showcasing the amount of care and attention to detail the devs and artists put into this game.”
“The game's vibrant pixel art style immediately captures your attention, evoking a strong sense of nostalgia for classic 80s and 90s video games while having detailed environments, characters that pop with personality and beautifully animated cutscenes.”
“The only good thing here is the art style; everything else sucks, all style no substance.”
“It's a game that is almost completely carried by its visual style/aesthetic; the veneer of which becomes quite thin very quickly.”
“I personally think that the 80's aesthetic combined with this weird anime-cyberpunk art style is super cliche and played out at this point.”

The game's story is generally described as short but engaging, often blending humor and social commentary within a vibrant, retro aesthetic. While some players appreciate its simplicity and the fun characters, others criticize it for being predictable or lacking depth. Overall, the narrative serves as a light-hearted backdrop to the fast-paced gameplay, with many reviewers expressing a desire for more story content despite enjoying the existing plot.
“This game has a surprisingly engaging story with some really fun characters as well.”
“The story blends seamlessly into the gameplay as what you do is almost directly matched up with the in-universe lore, absolutely stunning 80's cyberpunk storyline that's deep enough to keep you engaged but unintrusive enough to never break the flow.”
“The story is deceptively simple and yet explores some rather harrowing themes about the modern day... like most cyberpunk inspired stories do.”
“The story is... terrible.”
“Perhaps the single worst story I've encountered in a video game.”
“The story could be neat but the ending really sucks.”

“The music, graphics, voice acting, and most importantly the gameplay loop.”
“From the aesthetics to the soundtrack, and the quick-twitch gameplay, all of it gels extremely well to capture that breakneck murder pace.”
“As much as I appreciate the art style and the music, especially in the cyberpunk setting, it does get too repetitive and boring.”
“I'm generally open to all sorts of music, but this is rather forgettable.”
“Dunno why it stands at overwhelmingly positive on Steam at this moment; probably everybody got blinded by the art style and music.”

“The game is hilarious, but maybe a little too on the nose sometimes.”
“The humor and cynicism is modern but well done and clever, so while this game is destined to age, it'll age gracefully.”
“The game’s humor is an anime fever dream, packed with cheesy one-liners that hit harder than your Wi-Fi bill.”
“I don't know if 'don't get into debt' and all kinds of good life advice is supposed to be funny or something, but I found it just weird.”
“The jokes felt forced and often missed the mark, leaving me more confused than amused.”
“I expected clever humor, but instead, it was just a series of tired clichés that fell flat.”

The game boasts high replayability, primarily due to its roguelike elements, endless mode, and various difficulty options, which encourage players to return for more challenges. While the main story is relatively short, the engaging gameplay, humor, and unlockable content provide ample motivation for repeated playthroughs. However, some players noted a desire for more variety in levels and upgrades to enhance the replay experience further.
“Not a long game, but has high replayability due to the few roguelike elements.”
“The only complaint I have is that the story is pretty short, but you don't have to worry about that either because it is packed with content, and then comes the tons upon tons of replayability from the alternative game modes.”
“It's a short game, but the swift, high-octane nature of the gameplay, as well as the RNG of the levels, provides great replay value.”
“While the campaign may have a lot of redeeming qualities and provides a huge chunk of the appeal of the game, the lack of playable characters and only a handful of guns and lackluster perks, with some exceptions, it really lacks the replay value that has become synonymous with the rogue-like genre.”
“The bosses are pretty trivial, I don't think I died to one once, and there might not be a lot of replay value other than endless mode, but it's definitely worth your time if you want a twitchy fast-paced dopamine hit that won't overstay its welcome.”
“I find the replay value too low to justify 20 dollars.”

Players express a deep emotional connection to the game, highlighting its nostalgic elements, such as the unboxing experience and the joy of reading manuals, which evoke fond memories of gaming in the 90s. The protagonist's wholesome nature and the game's ability to help with emotional regulation resonate strongly, with some players feeling a mix of nostalgia and sadness over missed achievements. Overall, the game's style, music, and heartfelt moments create a powerful emotional impact, making it a memorable experience for many.
“And it was really wholesome, and it's apparently not included if you pirate the game. Unlocking an achievement simply for 'unboxing the game and reading the manual' really hit hard for some reason.”
“Then I see only 36.5% unlocked that achievement, which made me sad that so many people unknowingly missed out on a cool little wholesome part of the game.”
“I haven't even played it; just the style, the music, the menu, and the unboxing experience already have so much love in them that it makes me shed a tear.”

Players generally find the grinding aspect of the game to be a mixed experience. While some enjoy the challenge of multiple playthroughs and the progression system, others feel that the repetitive nature of grinding—especially in easier modes—can become tedious and diminish the initial excitement. Overall, the game offers a solid design and engaging gameplay, but the grind can lead to a sense of monotony over time.
“You'll need a second life for grinding.”
“My only complaint is that if you're trying to get all the achievements for the game, it does get somewhat tedious considering you have to play through the entire game 4 times on a variety of difficulties. This is fine for the harder difficulties since it adds more of a challenge, but for the easier ones like the no timer mode, it gets somewhat boring since you've already done everything and now there's little to no challenge to it.”
“Despite this game being about a flow of constant forward progression, the actual pace of the game feels tedious.”
“I will likely still try and clear harder difficulties, but I think the brilliance of the dopamine kick did start to desensitize too quickly, turning some of that fun factor into a tedious dopamine 'ritual'.”

Overall, the game's optimization receives mixed feedback; while some players praise its solid performance and smooth gameplay, others report significant performance issues, particularly during loading and on certain hardware setups. Developers are expected to address these concerns in future updates.
“Very well made, very well optimized, nothing bad to say about this awesome game.”
“And most importantly, no performance issues!”
“If you're using an AMD rig and want extra performance, turn off VSync in the driver and make tessellation use application.”
“I am currently on chapter 6 because of the performance issues caused by my own hardware and also by being, as the kids say these days, 'bad.' I might even swallow my pride and bump the difficulty down so I can finish the game this weekend; might not, who can say?”
“As for things to improve, I've been seeing that some people have been having some performance issues, but I would assume the devs are aware of the situation and will address that in due time.”
“If you're using an AMD rig and want extra performance, turn off V-Sync in the driver and make tessellation use application settings.”

Mullet Mad Jack Review – Blade Run ‘N Gunner
Mullet Mad Jack is a blistering, balls-to-the-wall throwback to 90s anime and violent, dystopian sci-fi that marries boomer shooters with speedrunning and roguelike aspirations to form an absolutely intoxicating brew. It's short, and there's not much to keep you invested even with infinite floors to climb, but you'll be having a good fucking time while you're in it.
