story
81 mentions Positive Neutral NegativeThe story in this game is generally considered its weakest aspect, with many reviewers noting it as uninspired and lacking depth, primarily serving as a backdrop for the multiplayer experience. While some players appreciate the offline story and its integration with tutorials, the overall narrative is often overshadowed by the grind-heavy quest structure and the focus on combat. Despite these criticisms, the game offers a rewarding progression system and engaging gameplay that keeps players entertained, even if the story itself is not a primary draw.

“Other features of the game that are enjoyable: great story mode, old monsters come back stronger or in groups to fight again, varying detailed terrain, and the ability to mount the monsters.”
“As for story... it's probably the weakest part of the game.”
“The story is quite uninspired and doesn't feel like Capcom spent much effort on it.”
“But honestly, no one plays Monster Hunter for the story.”
Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate Review
Exclusive to Nintendo 3DS While there’s nothing obvious that’s revolutionary about Monster Hunter 4, there’s a lot going on beneath the surface. Rather than bolt a new setting and new features on the bones of Monster Hunter Tri, Capcom has quietly and cleverly disassembled the component parts of its game and reassembled them in a structure that’s both more welcoming to novices and a richer, deeper experience for fans. The result is easily the best game in the series, and one that easily circumvents the technical weaknesses of the 3DS.

Monster Hunter 4 has a lot of repetition and grinding, but succeeds at capturing the thrill of the big game hunt like no other game can. If you’re looking for a long-term game with plenty of loot to grind, quests to beat and bosses to kill, this is your game.

If you're a Monster Hunter fan the answer is simple, buy this game - it's a significant undertaking but utterly enthralling once you're drawn in. There's a greater sense of story to make the single-player exploits a little more interesting than is typical, and online is slick and performs well; lack of voice chat is a blow, nevertheless. New weapons, locations and monsters make this a treat for fans, if still intimidating to those considering a first dip; yet if you're up for the investment in time, this is another special experience from Capcom. A true portable blockbuster.
