The gameplay of Toukiden 2 is characterized by its engaging monster-hunting mechanics, fluid combat, and a variety of weapon options, making it a strong alternative to the Monster Hunter franchise. Players appreciate the introduction of unique mechanics like the "demon hand" and the strategic use of mitama, which enhance the overall experience, although some find the gameplay can become repetitive over time. While the game offers a rich world and satisfying combat, it also faces criticism for its interface and some mechanics that are not well-explained, which can detract from the experience for new players.
“There is a long list of movesets for players to master, combined with different kinds of mitama portrayed in beautiful 2D artwork, giving players the opportunity to strategize with their gameplay.”
“The gameplay is fluid and fast-paced, making it a fun, lore-rich world with interesting enemies and a beautiful art style featuring unique weapons and mechanics.”
“Toukiden 2 improves pretty much on every feature of its predecessors, with an interesting approach to open-world gameplay, a good number of customization possibilities, an engaging story featuring a charming cast of characters, and plenty of intense action.”
“The gameplay was very floaty and completely unsatisfying.”
“I'm disappointed by the gameplay; the dialogue is boring and lifeless, not much combo you can do, the aim with the gun is trash.”
“This game is super stylish, got a nice world with good variation to enjoy, but the battle mechanics of this game are really pretty awful.”

The graphics of Toukiden 2 receive mixed reviews, with many players noting that while the art style is appealing and the character customization is extensive, the overall graphical fidelity feels dated, often resembling last-generation titles. Some users appreciate the game's ability to run smoothly on lower-end systems, but others criticize the lack of high-resolution support and the presence of graphical glitches. Overall, while the visuals may not be cutting-edge, they are deemed adequate for the game's enjoyable mechanics and immersive gameplay.
“The graphics look amazing for the game standard in its time, the customization is diverse, and the costume/fashion is insanely creative and limitless. I can spend hours just holding a fashion show for my character, attempting to mix and match different parts.”
“The graphics are great, even if the Asian-punk art design can be anywhere from baffling to ridiculous at times. Crafting new gear and upgrading feels rewarding, and you'll generally be happy with your new look.”
“The graphics have been improved, and the story is told in a more immersive way. The world is huge and open, with just some instancing when doing specific missions and in co-op mode, but with no transitions between areas at all.”
“The graphics are clearly not a selling point.”
“The graphics are that of a port from a handheld, so expect last-gen quality console tier if you ramp it up.”
“The only bad things I can say about this game so far is that it does feel like a last generation game as far as the graphics, dialog and interface is concerned.”

Overall, enjoyment of the grinding largely depends on personal preference for combat and progression pacing.
“You'll need a second life for grinding.”
“This is a game with a decently long story and a grindy/repetitive post-game with multiplayer.”
“Monster Hunter is, in my opinion, unbearably slow and pointlessly grindy.”

“Bought this during sale despite reading numerous reports about how it is a bad port, poorly optimized, taking huge amounts of CPU no matter what is going on in the game.”

The game's atmosphere is praised for its beautiful environments and distinct styles, effectively immersing players in a fantasy Japan setting. Despite its somewhat dated visuals, the combination of engaging music, open-world exploration, and interactive elements enhances the overall experience, making players feel part of a larger world. However, some reviews note a slightly "weeb-ish" vibe, which may not appeal to everyone.
“I did get my fix for the atmosphere of a fantasy Japan I was looking for.”
“The game's dripping with atmosphere and looks great, with plenty of varied, large open world areas to explore.”
“The areas themselves are all nicely rendered, each having its own distinct style and atmosphere.”
“I picked this up because I wanted a game with a Japanese setting and atmosphere, but didn't feel ready to tackle Nioh or Sekiro.”

Overall, while some players enjoy a stable experience, others face frustrating bugs that hinder gameplay.

“No problems, no glitches, can run at 60fps.”
“Yes, the port runs great at 60 fps.”
“I tried uninstalling & reinstalling, I tried restarting my computer, I followed the troubleshooting guide in the readme it came with; but no matter what I did, whenever I hit the play button, it crashed before it even got started booting up; so ultimately, I had to refund it & all its DLC.”
“Usually that is not an issue, however Toukiden 2 only seems to support FXAA which is not an option for AMD, so when using the AMD card I end up having a bit to a lot of graphical glitches (seriously depending on the camera angle parts of my character's hair just vanished, etc)...”
“Cons: this game is buggy.”
