The graphics of the game have received significant criticism for being overly glossy and bright, causing eye strain, and for featuring low-polygon, untextured assets that resemble outdated 1990s visuals. Reviewers feel that the minimalist design appears lazy and lacks the necessary detail, detracting from the overall experience. Additionally, performance issues persist even on capable hardware, further diminishing the visual appeal.
“Negative points for the visuals though, everything seems glossy/shiny and overly bright with little color variation, leading to some mild eye strain.”
“The lack of textures is a method that lazy developers often use to disguise their lack of talent or interest in doing the graphics properly, trying to disguise it under the name of 'art' or 'we made it look bad on purpose', which really isn't something gamers should have to put up with.”
“This game doesn't run very well even though I have a better than decent computer and the graphics set to fast.”

The game's optimization is a mixed bag; while it allows for instant restarts after death and maintains performance during gameplay, the lack of momentum retention between levels detracts from the overall experience. Improvements in these areas could enhance the game's appeal, but currently, it falls short of being fully enjoyable.
“In that map, you instantly restart after a death, and holding a direction doesn't stop between levels or deaths, making it much more playable in terms of performance.”
“If instant death improved performance, particularly regarding level momentum and instant restarts, it could be really cool, but for now, it's not quite there.”
“For one, in that map you instantly restart after a death, holding a direction doesn't stop between levels or deaths, and it's not as unplayable in terms of performance.”
“If instant death improved on the performance, between level momentum and instant restart fronts, it might actually be cool, but for now it's not.”

The monetization strategy has been criticized as a cash grab, with users finding the $6 price for instant death to be unjustifiable due to the game's defects and the availability of superior free alternatives on Steam.
“Instant death has the completely unrealistic cash grab price of around $6 USD. It's not worth it given the defects and shortcomings of the product, especially considering the sheer number of completely free, much higher quality games on Steam.”
