  • gameplay498 mentions

The gameplay of "Immortal Redneck" is characterized by fast-paced, fluid shooting mechanics and a variety of weapons, creating an engaging experience reminiscent of classic FPS titles. While the roguelite elements and procedurally generated levels add replayability, some players find the gameplay loop repetitive and the implementation of certain mechanics, like scrolls, can be frustrating. Overall, the game is praised for its solid core mechanics and enjoyable combat, though it may not offer enough variety to keep all players engaged long-term.

    • “I'll admit it was because of the name — devs did themselves a disservice, because this is a tight, high-octane, and immensely satisfying gameplay loop.”
    • “The gameplay in Immortal Redneck revolves around navigating through procedurally generated pyramids, battling hordes of enemies and challenging bosses.”
    • “The core gameplay loop is very enjoyable and is always good for a quick run.”
    • “The repetitive nature of the gameplay loop can become tiresome over time.”
    • “Honestly this game would've benefited much more from being a Doom clone/boomer-shooter instead of an action roguelike because the few roguelike mechanics it has are very barebones and are even a huge detriment to your enjoyment more often than not.”
    • “While the gameplay itself was average, there were some serious design flaws and balance issues that kept this game from being amazing.”
  • graphics243 mentions

The graphics of "Immortal Redneck" feature a vibrant, cartoonish art style that complements its light-hearted tone, with distinct Egyptian aesthetics across different levels. While the visuals are generally pleasing and well-optimized, some players noted a repetitiveness in enemy and room designs, which can detract from the overall experience. Overall, the graphics are considered solid for an indie title, providing a cohesive and enjoyable visual experience.

    • “Graphically, 'Immortal Redneck' delivers a cartoonish art style that suits its light-hearted tone.”
    • “The graphics are crisp and well-stylized, and the redneck himself is a great character design.”
    • “The graphics are gorgeous.”
    • “The graphics are pleasing, but you will get tired of looking at the same design of enemies and rooms repeated over and over and over.”
    • “Graphics aren't the best and the music is pretty forgettable too, sadly.”
    • “Graphically, the game is buried under a ton of console cinematic soap, but almost all of it can be turned off.”
  • music174 mentions

The music in the game is generally described as fitting the gameplay and thematically appropriate, though many reviewers find it forgettable or lacking standout tracks. While some praise the soundtrack for enhancing the energetic action and complementing the game's aesthetic, others note that it can become dull over time or feel out of place, particularly in certain levels. Overall, the music is seen as a decent backdrop that supports the gameplay, but it may not be memorable enough to stand on its own.

    • “The music is just incredible and pumps me up every single time, it's a perfect match to the fast gameplay and the great mood and visuals.”
    • “Dazzling art style, and also a good game for the ears thanks to Damian Sanchez and his awesome hybrid music.”
    • “The environment and music is greatly designed and enjoyable since the first pyramid, but it gets better and better in the second and especially the third pyramid, with new weapons, rooms and enemies, and more interesting decorations.”
    • “Music is reified, as in, simplified to the point of it being similar to graphics, lacking anything of note.”
    • “The music starts to get dull after the hundredth time hearing it, but it's thematic and lovely.”
    • “The music is forgettable.”
  • humor152 mentions

The humor in "Immortal Redneck" is characterized by its lighthearted, often silly tone, featuring amusing dialogues and quirky interactions that enhance the gameplay experience. Players appreciate the protagonist's funny voice lines and the game's offbeat, redneck-themed humor, although some find the jokes can become repetitive over time. Overall, the humor is seen as a significant highlight, contributing to the game's charm and appeal, especially for fans of lowbrow comedy and fast-paced shooters.

    • “This tongue-in-cheek concept sets the stage for a lighthearted and humor-filled experience, with amusing dialogues and quirky interactions that inject personality into the game.”
    • “The icing on the cake is the redneck's voice overs, which are hilarious and entertaining.”
    • “Immortal Redneck combines redneck rampage's off-color humor, the fast pace of classic first-person shooters, and the permadeath-with-progress and varied procedurally generated environments into a single awesome package.”
    • “Hearing the protagonist make an unfunny sex joke about mummies or drop a 'fuck' after killing a character that looks like it could be from Spyro feels extremely jarring and out of place.”
    • “Not funny”
  • replayability106 mentions

Overall, "Immortal Redneck" is praised for its high replayability, driven by its roguelike elements, randomized level layouts, and diverse character classes and skill trees. While many players find the gameplay loop engaging and the variety of weapons and abilities adds depth, some note that the experience can become repetitive over time. Despite this, the game offers ample content and unique playthroughs, making it a worthwhile choice for fans of the genre.

    • “The roguelike elements of the game, such as permadeath and randomized level layouts, offer replayability and a sense of progression.”
    • “Immortal Redneck is pure indie-fps wizardry, packaged in a severely replayable rogue-lite adventure through randomly generated Egyptian tombs, equipped with unholy weapons of damnation and random traits and skills upon every playthrough.”
    • “Great controls, amazing level design, nice bosses, permadeath countered with a skill tree, 9 playable classes each with their own unique weapons and abilities, endless replayability, and above all a save system that allows you to save after each room you've cleared.”
    • “Immortal Redneck is a middling roguelike with very little variance or replayability.”
    • “Replayability is killed by the mechanics of the '4th pyramid' aka the 'unlimited level pyramid'.”
    • “I did a few re-runs and pretty much just by seeing the room layout I already knew what enemies there would be, which made the replayability drop drastically.”
  • grinding90 mentions

The game is widely regarded as grindy, with players noting that achieving upgrades and completing dungeons often requires repetitive farming of gold and experience. While some enjoy the grind for skill upgrades and find it rewarding, many feel that it detracts from the overall experience, making combat tedious and progression feel slow. The reliance on grinding, especially in later levels, can lead to a sense of monotony, particularly for those who prefer a more dynamic gameplay experience.

    • “Even after you finish grinding your way through one temple, the next will be much the same, albeit with a slightly different aesthetic.”
    • “However, having played a bit longer, I think the rogue-lite elements basically ruin the game, making it way too grindy.”
    • “The game feels grindy because of it, and this is a problem I have with most roguelike games that feature this kind of post-death upgrade system.”
  • story68 mentions

The game's story is minimal and often nonsensical, serving primarily as a backdrop for fast-paced gameplay rather than a focal point. While some players appreciate the humor and lightheartedness of the narrative, many find it lacking in depth and character development, with a simple premise that doesn't detract from the overall enjoyment of the game. Ultimately, the consensus is that a deeper story would enhance the experience, but it is not essential for those seeking engaging action.

    • “The story is nonsensical but fun, as you would expect from a game with this title.”
    • “What we have here is a first-person shooter rogue-lite with a cartoony art style and a nonsensical plot about a redneck who is captured by monsters and mummified while on vacation in Egypt, only to break out of his sarcophagus and go on a rampage through some pyramids.”
    • “A more engaging universe and fleshed out story would be the cherry on top, but largely unnecessary to enjoy this fantastic game.”
    • “The storyline and writing are garbage, and are quite embarrassing at that, even while being an imaginative mash-up.”
    • “The story is so simple it may as well not be there.”
    • “Overall, this game may not have much depth of story, and the character is a cartoon redneck, but it's fun for those times you want to just kill monsters while a familiar movie plays on your tablet/smartphone.”
  • optimization42 mentions

Overall, the game is highly praised for its optimization, delivering smooth performance and solid controls across various hardware setups, including ultrawide resolutions. Players report minimal issues, with only occasional frame rate drops in specific scenarios, but generally experience stable and impressive performance, even on lower-end machines. The graphics are also noted as decent, contributing to the game's polished feel.

    • “Not to mention, the game in general is very well optimized, making it run smooth as butter on my machine.”
    • “Performance was good as expected on my rig, and the ultrawidescreen 3440x1440 support was seamless which is always a nice surprise.”
    • “The game runs amazingly, and is well optimized.”
    • “The performance is brutal.”
    • “[Performance struggles during some rooms and actions, lackluster boss encounters]”
    • “This is the section I talk about frame rates, stutters, and optimization.”
  • stability30 mentions

Overall, the game's stability is generally praised, with many users reporting smooth performance and no significant glitches. However, some players noted minor bugs and inconsistencies, suggesting that while the game runs well, it could benefit from further polish, especially considering its price point.

    • “No glitches at all.”
    • “Game runs great, very smooth intuitive controls.”
    • “Top marks in all categories and it runs great on my potato PC.”
    • “Buggy, boring, stay away.”
    • “Enjoyable, bit buggy, but very fun.”
    • “Minor glitches I can't fix, but that's alright.”
  • atmosphere14 mentions

The game's atmosphere is characterized by its bright, colorful visuals and a unique blend of Egyptian and sci-fi elements, creating an engaging and visually appealing experience. While it lacks the self-seriousness found in some other titles, it offers a fun and casual vibe that appeals to players, especially when on sale. Overall, the atmosphere enhances the frantic gameplay and intricate enemy designs, making it a worthwhile experience for casual gamers.

    • “Oh, and the general atmosphere is nothing like Doom - everything is bright, colorful, and visually appealing.”
    • “Don't hesitate, its Egyptian atmosphere combined with a sci-fi style will make you love it.”
    • “The game starts slow, but after warming up with your first runs, you will be hooked by the frantic gameplay and the gorgeous visuals and atmosphere inside the pyramids, along with the crazy designs of the enemies.”
    • “It does miss the atmosphere of not taking itself seriously like Immortal Redneck does.”
    • “Oh, and the general atmosphere is nothing like Doom - everything is bright, colorful, nicely looking.”
    • “I recommend the game to casual players only for the looks, the atmosphere, and the jokes of the game, without even the need to beat it, if it is on sale for a low price like 7-10 bucks.”
  • character development8 mentions

Character development in the game is notably lacking, with users highlighting the absence of a story and minimal dialogue, which detracts from the overall experience. While the character and enemy designs are praised for their aesthetic appeal and fit within the game's dark comic book theme, the lack of depth in character progression leaves players wanting more.

    • “I love the different aesthetics to each pyramid; you'll only see that first one for so long you might think that's all there is, but the second one is a really big change in theme. The enemy design manages to fit the dark comic book theme that the rest of the character design creates.”
    • “The graphics are crisp and well-stylized, and the redneck himself is a great character design.”
    • “No story, no character development and very little dialogue.”
    • “S crema, based on what my friends have said, I think you lost a lot of sales with the title and starter character design.”
    • “No story, no character development and very little dialogue.”
  • monetization8 mentions

The game is praised for its lack of intrusive monetization strategies, such as microtransactions or DLC, allowing for a more enjoyable experience. Players appreciate the solid progression system and express a desire for future expansions, indicating a positive reception towards the game's monetization approach.

    • “This game feels like the fake games they play in advertisements.”
    • “Its visually impressive and the gunplay feels really good, but I would like to be able to aim down sights like you can in Battlefield, Call of Duty, and real life. Even without that feature, it's still very enjoyable.”
    • “And there's a worthwhile progression system without any crappy DLC or microtransactions to ruin it, though I wouldn't mind some expansions in the future.”
