About

Hextones is a single player casual puzzle game. It was developed by Nukearts Studio and was released on April 5, 2021. It received positive reviews from players.

"Hextones" is a single-player puzzle game featuring fabulous graphics and a good soundtrack. The game challenges players to connect Hextones, which come in five colors and five symbols, on a grid with the goal of completing 100 Hextones and increasing the connections bonus. Players can connect one or more sides of a Hextone to those already placed on the grid, and the more connections in a move, the more fuel to the quantum engine. However, players must also complete the current tier to increase the connections bonus.

  • It is well-polished with smooth gameplay, appealing graphics, and a calming soundtrack, making it enjoyable for players looking to unwind.
  • The gameplay can feel shallow and lacks a sense of progression, which may lead to boredom after a short period.
  • Technical issues and minimalist graphics detract from the overall experience, making it feel more like a mobile app than a polished PC game.
  • The game has been criticized for its limited scope and the presence of fake positive reviews, raising concerns about its quality and value.
  • graphics
    10 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's graphics are polarizing, with some players criticizing the use of low-polygon, untextured assets that evoke a retro aesthetic reminiscent of early 1990s games, suggesting a lack of effort from developers. Conversely, others praise the vibrant colors, polished design, and satisfying animations, highlighting the visuals as a strong point that enhances the overall gaming experience. Overall, while opinions vary, the graphics are seen as either a charming stylistic choice or a sign of laziness in development.

    • “Very nice graphics!”
    • “The colors, design and artwork are fantastic.”
    • “Incredibly polished with amazing graphics and an immersive soundtrack.”
    • “The lack of textures is a method that lazy devs often use to disguise their lack of talent or interest in doing the graphics properly, trying to disguise it under the name of 'art' or 'we made it look bad on purpose', which really isn't something gamers should have to put up with.”
    • “Do we really need 4K resolution graphics for a tile game?”
    • “The visuals seem relaxing, but the graphics leave much to be desired.”

  • gameplay
    7 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay is mechanically sound and polished, offering a strategic challenge within a limited scope that may not sustain long-term engagement due to a lack of progression and variety. While it draws comparisons to classic titles like "Ishido," it introduces refreshed mechanics that enhance the experience, making it enjoyable for both newcomers and puzzle enthusiasts. However, players seeking more content may find the current offering insufficient.

    • “It's amazing how some simple game mechanics, well worked like in this game, can demand so much strategy.”
    • “The gameplay area consists of 124 hexagons, 5 hextones are placed at the start, representing all 5 colors and all 5 symbols in some capacity, the rest is up to you.”
    • “Gameplay is smooth and polished - a lot of work and optimization went into this simple title.”
    • “Instead, they included everything from here in spacetime too, so buying this is ill-advised; grab that for more content, whether you prefer timed or untimed gameplay.”
    • “This reminds me of the old Nintendo Game Boy game called 'Ishido,' but with a whole new refreshed look and mechanics!”
    • “In regards to mechanics and game design: very solid and engaging. This is my first time playing such puzzles, so I can be a little biased, but from what is being offered here, it's a very fun challenge that right off the bat I've spent a little more than 3 hours straight playing it.”
  • monetization
    3 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The monetization aspect of the game has been criticized due to a surge of suspiciously similar reviews that suggest a coordinated effort to promote the game, alongside a direct purchase option on Steam. Many users express concerns that the game may be an asset flip or cash grab, indicating a lack of genuine value and quality.

    • “The monetization strategy feels exploitative, with constant prompts to spend more money on in-game purchases.”
    • “It seems like the game was designed around making money rather than providing a fun experience, with essential features locked behind paywalls.”
    • “The aggressive monetization tactics overshadow the gameplay, making it hard to enjoy the game without feeling pressured to spend.”
  • replayability

Players find the game to be more challenging than it initially seems, contributing to a strong replay value that encourages multiple playthroughs.
