Godfall is a godlike load of fun to play. I am a firm believer in giving games a second chance and this one is no exception. Gameplay is smooth and uncomplicated, as is really the rest of it, making it easier to get into, and it’s oh-so-satisfying.
"Godfall is a fantasy action-RPG with looter elements, offering both single-player and co-op gameplay. Equipped with legendary armor sets , players ascend through elemental realms, battling unique enemies in a visually stunning world. However, be prepared for some bugs and grinding."

The story of Godfall is widely criticized for being generic, simplistic, and lacking depth, often described as a mere backdrop to the gameplay rather than a compelling narrative. Many players find it forgettable, with a basic revenge plot centered around a conflict with a brother who seeks godhood, and the campaign is seen primarily as a tutorial for the more engaging endgame content. While some appreciate the graphics and combat mechanics, the overall consensus is that the story fails to captivate or provide meaningful character development.
“The way the game progresses was quite fun; the way the story flows was kind of fun.”
“The story is quite good, even though it could have been delivered better in my opinion; it's a bit too short.”
“This is a fun, story-driven hack and slasher that will make you crave godslaying.”
“The story is just placeholder, the campaign is only there to serve as a tutorial for the 'end game' of repeating the same map over and over again.”
“The story is flat-out awful and does not make any sort of effort whatsoever to make you feel connected to any of the characters.”
“If you only want to experience the main storyline, the plot of the game is very boring.”

The gameplay of Godfall is a mixed bag, with some players praising its fluid combat mechanics, diverse builds, and engaging visuals, while others criticize its repetitive nature, clunky mechanics, and lack of depth. Many reviews highlight the complexity of the combat system, which can be both rewarding and frustrating, particularly due to issues like unresponsive controls and poorly designed boss encounters. Overall, while the game offers enjoyable moments and unique mechanics, it struggles with consistency and can feel tedious over time.
“The gameplay is like magic, has slight free-to-play vibes but it's very good nonetheless.”
“The combat is excellent and fluid, with a few diverse builds relying on different mechanics.”
“The gameplay is pretty fun if you just want a hack and slash looter.”
“The game wants to be Dark Souls, except most of the fight mechanics are horrible.”
“You're constantly juggling 8 or 9 mechanics and you will miss one.”
“All in all, it's a frustrating experience; the mechanics are working against each other instead of together, and I cannot recommend this game.”

The graphics of the game receive mixed reviews, with many praising the stunning visuals and art style, particularly on high-end systems, while others criticize the excessive brightness and shininess that detracts from the overall experience. Some players report issues with graphical optimization and performance, especially on lower-end hardware like the Steam Deck, leading to a frustrating experience. Overall, while the game showcases impressive graphics, the execution and clarity can be inconsistent, leaving some players feeling overwhelmed by the visual effects.
“Game has stunning visuals, probably the best I have seen this gen (PS5, Xbox Series X/S gen) compared to other games this gen.”
“The graphics are excellent as is the audio.”
“This game has amazing graphics, the visuals are dope, the customization options are on point, the story has been dope!”
“The graphics are pretty, but there's so much brightness in the world that it detracts from the game.”
“I ended up having to lower the settings, which made the game quite ugly, just to get it to not run terribly and thus ultimately ruining any positive thoughts I had on the graphical prowess of the game.”
“Too much flare, and over-done graphics makes it look terrible.”

The grinding aspect of the game is a significant point of contention among players, with many noting it as both a core feature and a potential drawback. While some enjoy the extensive resource farming and the challenge of perfecting builds through grinding, others find it repetitive and tedious, particularly in the endgame where players often face the same bosses repeatedly. Overall, the experience of grinding varies widely based on personal preference, with some players embracing it as part of the genre while others see it as a chore.
“And no, it's not very grindy.”
“The game is very grindy for resources.”
“It's a long grindy process that I'll be glad to be done with as I never want to look at the spirit realm again.”
“Imagine grinding for 23 hours to hit level 50 just to unlock matchmaking, only to be reminded that nobody plays this.”

Overall, the game's optimization has improved significantly since its initial release, with many players reporting smoother performance and fewer bugs. However, issues remain, particularly with ray tracing, and some users still experience stuttering and performance problems. While the game is now considered playable and enjoyable by many, there are calls for further optimization, especially for co-op play.
“It's much more optimized than when it first came out. Still has a few bugs, but it's very playable. Personally, I only encountered 2 bugs and I'm level 35 at the moment.”
“I have an RTX 3080 and Ryzen 3800X, so my rig is not a slouch, but I can play at 1440p maxed out (minus ray tracing) and get a smooth 100-144 FPS without issues.”
“Back when this first dropped on the Epic Store, I would have said hold off because it was roughly optimized and the end game loop was lackluster. But the devs have stuck with it when most would have just dropped the game, and I gotta say it’s playing great. I'm having a blast and can’t wait to get to all the new end game zones they’ve added. Honestly, 30 bucks is a pretty good steal in my opinion.”
“The performance is just awful!!”
“I heard it was bad over and over, presumably due to being devoid of content among bugs and performance issues.”
“I was an original purchaser of the Epic version on release and even though I enjoyed the gameplay, at that time the game was plagued with bugs, performance issues, and lack of content.”

The music in the game receives mixed reviews, with some players finding it enjoyable yet forgettable, while others appreciate its distinctiveness during combat and exploration. Although the soundtrack is described as epic by some, it is often criticized for lacking depth and excitement, with comparisons to a party atmosphere that feels underwhelming. Overall, while the music has its moments, it generally fails to leave a lasting impression.
“The background music is also a great masterpiece.”
“Hack & slash, metal bumpin, grindin all music to my ears... lots of play style depending on what skills, weapons, toys etc you equip.”
“The music in that game is memorable, the sound effects during combat and exploration are distinct that you can literally know where you are just by hearing what sort of footstep sounds you make.”
“Alas, Godfall has mediocre storytelling, forgettable, unexceptionally written characters, and passable music that just lacks dimensionality.”
“Whoever was on the sound team that thought that the end of every individual encounter in the tutorial map should have a stinger in the music deserves castration.”
“The music is boring; I mean, basically most Western games have boring music, but eh.”

The game's stability has received mixed feedback, with many players reporting minor bugs and glitches, particularly in the Epic version, which some found to be significantly more problematic. While some users noted improvements and optimizations over time, others experienced critical issues that hindered gameplay, such as unresponsive mechanics. “I'd avoid the Epic version; the Challenger Edition on Epic was super buggy for me.”
“Ok, so I played the game for around half an hour and the game is pretty nice. I love it as a DMC and Darksiders fan, but why is the game so buggy?”
“Game is broken. No matter what I do, the shield won't come up, so I can't progress through the game due to a level requiring the use of the shield throw. Good graphics, good story, and good gameplay, but buggy as hell!”

The game features no microtransactions, allowing players to earn everything through gameplay rather than spending money. While there are various in-game currencies for different purposes, they do not detract from the overall experience, which is designed to be enjoyable without the pressures of a live-service model. Players appreciate this approach, as it prioritizes good gameplay over monetization strategies commonly found in free-to-play games.
“The developers described it quite well: "We wanted to create an experience that was fun to play solo, better with friends, and with none of the hassles or FOMO of a live-service product with microtransactions." In my opinion, they definitely succeeded with that intention.”
“You never need to decide whether you should spend hours grinding for premium currency or paying money to unlock something or get a cosmetic. This also means that the game wasn't designed to push microtransactions at the cost of good gameplay design like so many free-to-play ARPGs.”
“Tl;dr: Finished the story, currently working on the add-on content. I recommend this game if you like looter mechanics, skilled and challenging combat, diversity in builds, crazy-looking visual effects and theme choices, cool armor design, and hate microtransactions because this game has none. Everything is earned through hard work!”
“The game can also be somewhat confusing as there are a lot to do and quite a few different currencies, not microtransactions, just currencies in the game that are used for different things.”

The humor in the game is often derived from amusing glitches, such as finish animations bugging out when defeating bosses near walls, which players find entertaining. Additionally, while the game features intriguing lore that can be discovered through item descriptions, this humor does not translate effectively into the main storyline. Overall, the humor is appreciated but somewhat inconsistent.
“Sometimes if you kill a boss next to a wall, the finish animation kinda bugs out, but if anything, that's just funny.”
“Funny enough, the game has some interesting lore about its characters if you choose to read item descriptions, but unfortunately, it does not come through in the story at all.”
“Not like funny trash either.”
