  • gameplay
    312 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay of "Forced" is characterized by its unique co-op mechanics, particularly the use of a spirit orb that players must strategically control to solve puzzles and defeat enemies. While the game offers engaging challenges and requires teamwork, many players find the mechanics frustratingly clunky and poorly balanced, leading to a mix of enjoyable moments and significant irritation, especially in solo play. Overall, the game shines in cooperative settings but suffers from design flaws that can detract from the experience.

    • “The challenges are unique and fun to overcome, and it helps that it's fluid and communicates things very overtly with the player with a lot of repeated mechanics from previously encountered levels.”
    • “It has some pretty unique mechanics and very well-designed levels that constantly bring new challenges with a huge emphasis on teamwork.”
    • “The spirit mentor mechanic is extremely unique and makes this game a ton of fun.”
    • “The gameplay doesn't change much after area 2 if you've gotten every crystal up to that point, meaning the game can't even possibly get better by adjusting your character's abilities. You've most likely found your combo and you definitely won't change it for the rest of the game as there's no real incentive to doing so... meaning the game is boring and you've experienced 100% of it at that point.”
    • “Dull gameplay, terrible controls, and an awful mechanic where you have to navigate a ball around while fighting in order to complete some areas.”
    • “The gameplay is basically mild puzzles smashed together with arena beat-em-up gameplay, where you'll be fighting against the clock (and spastic game bugs) to deal with blowing up statues, smashing into enemies in a poor excuse for a cooperative game, where player actions have scarce effect on teamplay, other than to screw with each other's plans to pass the glowing puzzle ball around, causing much frustration.”
  • story
    168 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The story in "Forced" is generally considered simplistic and not the main focus of the game, serving primarily as a backdrop for the cooperative gameplay. Players take on the roles of gladiators enslaved in a fantasy arena, fighting for their freedom through a series of challenging missions. While some appreciate the narrative's humor and the developers' inspiring backstory, many agree that the plot lacks depth and is overshadowed by the gameplay mechanics.

    • “The story is briefly told: as gladiators in a fantasy gladiator school, we are enslaved deep under a mountain and condemned to fight for our freedom.”
    • “Overall, great game and a great story about the development of this game; a group of indie game developers taking a risk and following their dreams.”
    • “The story is simple but the early twist plus good characters and good voice actors make it engaging.”
    • “I expected the campaign to have a story RPG, but it doesn't.”
    • “The story is not this game's strong point as the plot is fairly simple.”
    • “The attempt at a story is more of a hindrance and should've been left out almost altogether.”
  • graphics
    75 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The graphics in the game receive mixed reviews, with many players noting that while they are generally good and well-designed, they are not top-tier and can appear simplistic or cartoonish at times. Some users appreciate the beautiful environments and smooth performance, especially on lower-end hardware, while others criticize graphical glitches and optimization issues. Overall, the visuals are considered decent and functional, contributing positively to the gameplay experience despite some shortcomings.

    • “The game has some really nice environments and the graphics are really well designed and laid out.”
    • “The graphics, as well as the game design, are marvelous, and the gameplay is original and fun.”
    • “Spectacular graphics, and a cool view of your puzzle/arena as you simultaneously handle cool opponents and solve interesting puzzles.”
    • “The graphics are really bad, but that doesn't change the fact that the game is fun to play!”
    • “Its gameplay is shallow and its graphics are ugly.”
    • “In addition, the game is poorly optimized in terms of graphics use.”
  • stability
    48 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's stability is frequently criticized, with many users reporting numerous bugs, glitches, and connectivity issues that can disrupt gameplay. While some players find the game enjoyable despite these technical problems, others describe it as nearly unplayable due to frequent crashes and frustrating UI issues. Overall, the consensus is that while the game has potential, its stability issues significantly detract from the experience.

    • “The graphics are good, the performance is excellent, and there is no stuttering or freezing.”
    • “Great game in principle, but unplayably buggy.”
    • “Network issues are extremely common - the game splits and people see different things on their screens, someone can't move at all, someone dies but gets stuck in the dying animation and glitches the level, unable to complete it, and the list goes on.”
    • “The glitches in the current version make it nearly unplayable.”
  • humor
    41 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The humor in the game is largely appreciated, especially in multiplayer settings, where players find themselves laughing at both the absurdity of the gameplay and each other's misfortunes. While some players note that the humor can be hit-or-miss due to translation errors and frustrating mechanics, the overall experience is described as hilariously entertaining, particularly when shared with friends. However, technical issues and a simplistic story detract from the comedic potential for some players.

    • “But not a single hour was spent without laughing till I'm hoarse.”
    • “The co-op moments are hysterically funny!”
    • “5 hours in and we have spent a good portion of it laughing our asses off because of the situations we've gotten into.”
  • grinding
    29 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Overall, reviews indicate that the game diverges from traditional grinding mechanics commonly found in ARPGs, focusing instead on teamwork and strategy. While some players appreciate the lack of mindless loot farming and leveling, others find the gameplay can become tedious, particularly during challenging boss encounters and puzzle segments. The experience is described as more about cooperation and skill execution rather than grinding for gear or experience points.

    • “You'll need a second life for grinding.”
    • “There are some hack and slash elements, but you aren't farming enemies to improve your character. There's no real experience points; you just kill enemies to stay alive and avoid losing.”
    • “There's no gear progression, so there's no grinding.”
    • “If you fail the combat in the second part, you have to do the puzzle part again, and it becomes easily tedious.”
    • “I know the game is advertised as 'challenging' and focused on teamwork, but trial and error style, rinse and repeat arenas is just not my cup of tea. The game got pretty tedious after the second boss, at which point I dumped it.”
    • “Everything is balanced for multiple players; after the first couple of trials, the game simply becomes tedious if you're trying to do everything on your own.”
  • music
    25 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music in the game receives mixed reviews; while many players appreciate the well-composed soundtracks that enhance the gameplay experience, others criticize the audio mixing, which often drowns out the music with sound effects. Some players find the music engaging and fitting for the game's atmosphere, particularly during key moments, while others describe it as forgettable or boring. Overall, the soundtrack is seen as a strong point, but its impact is diminished by technical issues related to audio balance.

    • “A very nice game, it has a great soundtrack, fairly simple to play but challenging nevertheless.”
    • “The game's soundtracks are also very well composed and fit each level.”
    • “The game's music is great, but the music for the final boss really got me into the mood, it made me feel like I was in the middle of a legendary struggle.”
    • “The music is boring.”
    • “This game has terrible audio mixing that makes most combat and music either too soft or not audible at all.”
    • “The soundtrack would be nice if you didn't have to choose between silence or being deafened, and perhaps that's also the reason the fighting sucks; you have to turn the game sounds so far down in order to be able to hear your friends that you miss out on any subtle sounds such as impacts and also miss out on the soundtrack.”
  • optimization
    22 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's optimization has received mixed reviews, with many players reporting significant performance issues such as stuttering, lag, and crashes, particularly in single-player mode. While some users noted improvements on modern hardware and good performance on Linux, others experienced persistent network and graphical optimization problems. Overall, the game appears to require further optimization to enhance the user experience across various platforms.

    • “Works excellent on Linux, great performance!”
    • “Awesome optimization.”
    • “Edit: graphics have been optimized and it's running much better on modern hardware.”
    • “The game becomes a stuttering mess - enemies teleport and abilities do not work.”
    • “Completely unoptimized for single player.”
    • “Badly optimized, poorly written script and mediocre gameplay.”
  • replayability
    21 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Overall, the game's replayability is mixed; while some players appreciate the challenges and time trials that encourage replaying levels, others find the lack of randomness and limited content after completing the main objectives diminish its long-term appeal. The unique skill gem system and decent puzzles add some replay value, but many reviewers noted that the absence of additional boss fights or unlockable content restricts the overall replayability.

    • “The desert and jungle worlds have some great, replayable, and fun levels.”
    • “Challenges make each level replayable and some of the puzzles are decent brain teasers.”
    • “This game also has tons of value in the replayability department as well, not to mention it is gorgeous, with really good voice acting.”
    • “I like forced and would recommend it if you want something to play with your friends, but there's not a lot of replayability here.”
    • “It's nice that you can always access all of the classes, but there is no replay value.”
    • “In terms of replayability, there is no randomness to this game, or any abundance of places you might have missed to explore.”
  • character development
    7 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Character development in the game is largely minimal, with players primarily limited to choosing from four predefined classes that fit traditional RPG roles. While the gameplay emphasizes problem-solving and cooperation, many reviewers express a desire for deeper character customization and development options, noting that the lack of these elements detracts from long-term engagement. Overall, the focus on puzzles and mechanics overshadows character growth, leaving it feeling basic and underwhelming.

    • “Addictive, fun together, never seen before gameplay, real cooperation, a lot of communication, strategizing, character development, challenging.”
    • “The battle mechanics and character development are basic, but the puzzle aspect more than compensates.”
    • “Graphics are pretty good, not in a high-res way, but it looks pretty unique in the enemy and character design, though I wish there was more customization done for your character other than picking out which skill to use.”
    • “Forced looks the same as traditional top view/side view RPG games but plays a bit differently in the fact the focus is on solving problems rather than character development or character choices.”
    • “There are 4 classes which do fall into the tank, damage, and support categories that players will know from normal RPG/RTS games, but that's where character development stops really.”
    • “Zero character development and no loot to customize your build.”
  • emotional
    4 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Players report a deeply emotional experience with the game, highlighting its passionate development and heartwarming backstory. The music, particularly during the final boss fight, enhances the emotional intensity, evoking a range of feelings from laughter to frustration, ultimately fostering a sense of triumph and connection to the game's narrative.

    • “Danish developed game, but a team that really shows off their passion and depth of commitment - check their story at their website, it is really a heartwarming one.”
    • “I laughed, I cried, I raged, and I celebrated.”
    • “The game's music is great, but the music for the final boss really got me into the mood. It made me feel like I was in the middle of a legendary struggle, so much that even after all the frustration that had been built up prior to it, I didn't rage once at a death, no matter how close I came to defeating him that run.”
  • monetization
    3 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The monetization aspect of the game has received criticism for misleading advertising and a lack of player engagement, suggesting that promotional efforts may have negatively impacted the game's integrity and player experience.

    • “This game's advertising, store page included, is incredibly misleading.”
    • “I guess you guys broke the game while shoving in your advertising for your new game?”
    • “Too bad there are not really that many players playing it, and there is no advertising for this game...”
  • atmosphere
    3 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The atmosphere is characterized by a seamless integration of challenging puzzles and action, resulting in an exhilarating experience for players.

    • “The puzzles weave through the action seamlessly, creating a challenging but exhilarating atmosphere.”
