Enter The Gungeon

Enter the Gungeon feels a lot like The Binding of Isaac, back before that was re-released 19 times and became so bloated and unbalanced that it wasn’t much fun anymore. It offers continual progress, it rewards mastery of its skill-based gameplay, and the drops you get on a run can so radically change the way you play that every run feels different. Marry that with a good sense of humour, a preponderance of puns and references, and some beautiful pixel art, and you have a game in which it’s very, very easy to lose a lot of time, and enjoy every damn minute of it.

  • story
    754 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The story in "Enter the Gungeon" is generally described as light and minimal, serving primarily as a backdrop to the engaging gameplay. Players embark on a quest to find a legendary gun that can "kill the past," with each character having their own backstory that unfolds through gameplay and interactions with NPCs. While some reviewers appreciate the humor and charm of the narrative, others note that the focus remains heavily on gameplay rather than a deep, cohesive story, making it suitable for those who enjoy action over narrative depth.

    • “The narrative, while light, provides context and motivation for the characters’ quest to find a legendary gun that can rewrite the past, weaving a subtle but compelling storyline throughout the action.”
    • “The story is simple but clever: enter the gungeon to find a gun that can kill your past.”
    • “The gameplay loop is both tight and rewarding: players choose from a diverse cast of characters, each with their own backstory and unique starting items, and delve into procedurally generated levels that ensure no two runs feel the same.”
    • “Limited story: while the gameplay shines, the narrative is minimal, which might not appeal to players looking for a deep story.”
    • “The story element is kept light and brief, popping up only once in a while amidst the action, but it nonetheless contains some intriguing parts for you to discover and speculate on.”

  • grinding

While some appreciate the chaotic combat and the satisfaction of unlocking new content, others criticize the slow progression and repetitive gameplay, leading to frustration and a sense of wasted time. Overall, the game is described as requiring a significant time investment for minimal rewards, making it less appealing for those who dislike grind-heavy experiences.

    • “There is a lot of repetition, but it's not too grindy as long as you can keep making some progress.”
    • “While there is no grinding when playing over and over, the best part about this game is that you might just get a little farther each time you play.”
    • “Not too hard, not too easy, and most importantly, not too grindy (well, except the minecart one).”
    • “It's just really annoying and tedious.”
    • “This is a tool for siphoning out money from you disguised as a video game. If you know what you're doing, it becomes a waiting simulator as you trudge through insane amounts of grinding just to be able to properly play the game with the characters and guns you want. Only after you unlock them all will you realize there's literally no point in playing except for grinding for even more pointless stuff, and that you're wasting your time.”
    • “The gameplay is just the right amount of challenge in a roguelike, you can sometimes get lucky and get good drops, but for the most part your progression through the game is just about gaining skill rather than grinding time.”

The atmosphere in "Enter the Gungeon" is widely praised for its charming pixel art, engaging sound design, and lighthearted humor, creating an immersive experience that balances chaos with playfulness. • “Enter the Gungeon has excellent atmosphere.”
    • “Atmosphere-wise, Enter the Gungeon hasn't exactly grabbed me, but the art and character designs are cute enough.”
    • “Not much to say, it's a gun-centered Binding of Isaac shooter with an atmosphere that's so dense you can't breathe in it.”
    • “In comparison to Nuclear Throne, this game has inferior atmosphere, and most importantly, awful pacing because Nuclear Throne was made difficult with the full intention of making players feel like it shouldn't take them long to reclaim what was lost.”
  • stability
    73 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Overall, the game's stability is a mixed bag. While many players report smooth performance and minimal glitches, particularly in single-player mode, others experience frequent freezes and bugs, especially in multiplayer. • “The game runs well on every computer I've had it on (5 now) with almost no glitches, and it's very easy to get into.”

    • “Buggy piece of crap, it used to be ok until they released an update which was meant to make it better but now it's full of bugs.”

The emotional aspect of the game elicits a wide range of feelings, from heartwarming moments and laughter to deep frustration and sadness due to its challenging gameplay and permadeath mechanics. Overall, the game successfully balances its whimsical charm with moments of genuine emotional weight, making it a memorable experience for many.

    • “This game will make you want to cry and throw your PC out of a five-story building... but it's totally worth it.”
    • “The deaths in this game are so heartbreaking, like 'more than Dark Souls' heartbreaking, because no matter how much skill you have, you're destined to die (and in the worst and most unforgiving way possible, I might add).”
    • “I just finished playing half an hour of ETG, after not playing video games in forever, and it was worth every second. I don't think I've ever been happier with a video game; I laughed so hard I cried, and had eight times where I was laughing and panic shaking.”
  • optimization
    56 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Overall, the game's optimization is mixed; while it runs smoothly on platforms like the Steam Deck and many PCs, some users report significant performance issues, particularly on lower-end devices and specific consoles like the Xbox One and Raspberry Pi. Many players appreciate the charming art style and gameplay, but frustrations arise from poor optimization for PC controls and inconsistent performance during intense gameplay. • “I have to say, it runs flawlessly on the Steam Deck — smooth performance, great controls, and it looks fantastic on the handheld screen.”
    • “Performance-wise, you can run this on quite a lot of devices with no slowdown whatsoever; Gungeon is surprisingly, refreshingly lightweight for how deep a game it gets to be.”
    • “Optimized, stable, and I don't think I've seen a single bug.”
    • “For a pixel game, performance is bad.”
    • “Completely unoptimized for PC, no mouse sensitivity controls, weird control scheme.”
    • “Enter the Gungeon's excellent concept gets bogged down by serious performance issues.”
  • character development
    47 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Character development in the game is highlighted by its charming and unique character designs, which contribute significantly to the overall atmosphere and humor. Players appreciate the creativity behind both the characters and the enemies, with many noting that the designs enhance the gameplay experience. However, some critiques mention a lack of depth in character progression, as the game relies more on random loot generation than on gradual character development.

    • “This game has a lot of content, a really interesting plot, and fun character development.”
    • “The character design in the game is just completely astounding, you got a charming pilot who's looking to save his wingman, and other characters like a convict who was looking to go back to her criminal life after being sentenced to the gungeon.”
    • “Absolutely love the character design and the creativity that went into all the guns and items.”
    • “After years of unfair character development by God, I killed a character's past and beat Enter the Gungeon.”
    • “I get that the appeal of overwhelming item diversity and bullet hellishness, but the movements are slog-ish, the character design feels soulless, the guns lack a punch due to the sameness of bullets flying around, the need to separately click for reload with an empty gun indicator far from where the player's eyes are, slow runs that take forever (even when dying on one of the first three floors like me), all this didn't really work for me.”
    • “Boring character design ripped off from Adventure Time.”
  • monetization
    16 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's monetization model is praised for its absence of microtransactions, with players appreciating that all in-game currency is earned through gameplay rather than purchased. The developers have made a point to mock microtransactions and cash grabs, offering free updates that significantly enhance the game without additional costs. Overall, the approach is seen as a refreshing commitment to player loyalty over profit.

    • “It's cheap, doesn't have microtransactions (the developers even make a joke about them), it is highly replayable and it includes stuff like secret levels and bosses.”
    • “Kudos to the developer and the publisher for not succumbing to the pressure of monetization; it's a breath of fresh air seeing that a company is willing to let go of profitability in favor of loyalty to the consumer.”
    • “Devs just dropped a final update which got me hooked back into this game... all updates were free, no microtransactions... and the updates were not minor; they added game-changing content, adding potential hours of extra gameplay.”
    • “The only paid DLC is a joke on microtransactions and paid DLCs that don't offer much content.”
    • “Literally a copy of Binding of Isaac, actual cash grab.”
    • “Exit the Gungeon is a cash grab, so this game doesn't have much of a future.”
