  • Disposable Heroes offers a fun and addictive rogue-lite gameplay experience with a large amount of content, including many levels, weapons, items, and enemies.
  • The game features a unique, charming art style with hand-drawn-like graphics and a great medieval-themed soundtrack, complemented by a talented female narrator who adds humor and personality.
  • Local co-op mode enhances the play experience, making the game more enjoyable when played with a friend, and the developer is active and responsive to community feedback.
  • The game suffers from clunky, unresponsive controls and frustrating combat mechanics, including enemies hitting rapidly without recovery time and automatic room transitions that cause loss of loot.
  • There are many bugs and design flaws such as slow screen transitions, poor UI/menu navigation, missing control explanations, inconsistent control schemes, and lack of key remapping options.
  • The difficulty can feel unfair and punishing, with some levels causing instant death or random instadeath situations, leading to frustration and lack of rewarding moments during play.
  • graphics
    20 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The graphics are intentionally childlike and hand-drawn, with a simple, crude style that some find charming and unique, while others see it as low-effort and visually unappealing. Although the artwork can grow on players and adds to the game's quirky identity, many criticize it for feeling unpolished and hard to distinguish at times. Overall, the graphics contribute to the game's distinctive style but receive mixed reactions regarding their quality and humor.

    • “The graphics look unique with their hand-drawn style.”
    • “The text suits the graphics well, and the cutscenes are also very well drawn.”
    • “Graphically it looks good and there are plenty of levels, so you won't get bored easily playing the game.”
    • “Low effort twin-stick graphics coupled with tired gameplay results in a poor quality flop.”
    • “Disposable Heroes is trying to be a funny, random kind of game, but that's where it fails the most, right after the godawful gameplay and the cringe-inducing graphics.”
    • “The graphics are one of the worst attempts I've ever seen at self-aware humour, because it's not funny, it just looks awful. It's all (badly) hand-drawn, or maybe MS Paint-drawn, and sometimes you can't even distinguish some things from others. It all just looks terrible and nausea-inducing.”
  • gameplay
    12 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay of Disposable Heroes is generally seen as simple and repetitive, with some reviewers criticizing it as low-effort and tiresome, while others find it enjoyable and straightforward with fun mechanics and upgrades. Though lacking depth and polish, it offers a casual, lighthearted experience that appeals to those not seeking complexity.

    • “The gameplay itself is very simple; room by room you must destroy the enemies you're faced with using random weapons, potions, and your own wily movement skills!”
    • “You collect gold throughout the levels, and gold carries over after dying. It can be spent at the market for various upgrades to make your gameplay a little easier, so it's not the same grind over and over with nothing to show for it.”
    • “The gameplay is simple enough. At the start, you can choose from two characters (also later you can unlock an additional two).”
    • “Low effort twin-stick graphics coupled with tired gameplay results in a poor quality flop.”
    • “Disposable Heroes tries to be a funny, random kind of game, but it fails the most right after the godawful gameplay and the cringe-inducing graphics.”
    • “The gameplay is by far the worst part; you can either pick arrow keys and C and V, or WASD and C and V, with C being primary attack and V being secondary. The mouse is useless, you won't use it even for the menu.”
  • music
    11 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music in the game is widely praised for being great, outstanding, and fitting well with themes like a medieval setting. Users find the soundtrack enjoyable and a strong positive aspect, often highlighting its quality despite other criticisms of the game's visuals. The narration and voice work are also appreciated, enhancing the overall audio experience.

    • “The music in this game is great.”
    • “The music is outstanding with a medieval theme, adding to the fun and interesting story.”
    • “Great music, hilarious artwork, nice animations, plus a narrator with a beautiful voice.”
    • “Get to main menu, spacebar works as 'enter' (what the actual f**k?), get into options on accident and with the press of one key somehow turn music volume down to 5%.”
    • “As far as I know the game has only one developer for it and someone else for the music.”
    • “It's hard to search on YouTube because apparently Metallica has a song named Disposable Heroes.”
  • story
    11 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The story is generally viewed as simple and unoriginal, with limited focus and occasional cutscenes. However, some users appreciate its full voice narration and find it charming and entertaining, likening it to classic, lighthearted tales. Overall, while not a highlight, the story is supported by engaging narration and complements the gameplay experience.

    • “When you start the game you will find a little, but interesting story.”
    • “It's a lot of fun when not being unfair, the story is actually quite interesting; it feels like something from an old classic Disney movie with an extra comedy touch. The design is simple and the music is outstanding with a medieval theme.”
    • “And the best point of this is a fully voiced storytelling.”
    • “The story is basically Binding of Isaac and some original parts, Isaac being the baby, and the original parts being the fact that I wanted to shoot myself in the foot.”
    • “To be perfectly honest though, there isn't anything terribly wrong with the story, it's just unimaginative and uninteresting, so that's that.”
    • “Though lacking in story (and I mean completely lacking), the gameplay makes up for that as it doesn't pretend it's deep or well written; it just does what it says on the front of the tin.”
  • humor
    9 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's humor is polarizing, with some players finding it funny, cute, and enhanced by entertaining animations and narration, while others criticize it for failing to deliver jokes effectively, calling the style confusing, cringe-worthy, and poorly executed. Overall, humor is a mixed aspect that may appeal to fans of quirky, self-aware comedy but falls flat for others.

    • “Funny, short, cute.”
    • “Disposable Heroes is a rogue-lite confirmed in simple but funny style.”
    • “Although the game is in early access I had a lot of fun playing the game, it has a nice sense of humor and a really addictive quality.”
    • “The graphics are one of the worst attempts I've ever seen at self-aware humor because it's not funny. It just looks awful—it's all badly hand-drawn, or maybe MS Paint-drawn, and sometimes you can't even distinguish some things from others. It all just looks terrible and nausea-inducing. The music is fine, though; not much to complain there.”
  • grinding
    2 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game’s progression is challenging without feeling grindy, offering an enjoyable experience rather than tedious grinding.

    • “Grindy achievement: no.”
  • stability
    1 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game suffers from significant stability issues, including frequent crashes at launch due to keyboard-related bugs. Additionally, limited input support restricts options to keyboard and gamepad, with the keyboard causing major problems.

    • “The game is extremely buggy, and only supports keyboard and gamepad, but the keyboard bugs out and can crash the game on launch.”
  • replayability
    1 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game offers strong replayability, especially suited for quick and relaxing rogue-lite sessions, making it enjoyable to play repeatedly.

    • “Plenty of replayability for those quick, relaxing rogue-lite sessions!”
  • optimization
    1 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's optimization is hindered by the narrator's excessive commentary, which can become annoying, especially during routine actions like menu navigation. Users suggest reducing the frequency or providing an option to disable these repeated narrations for a smoother experience.
