  • Deep and satisfying sword customization system with extensive creative freedom.
  • Engaging dark fantasy story mode with well-written characters and meaningful choices.
  • Ability to export sword designs as 3D-printable STL files is a unique and praised feature.
  • Story content currently limited and incomplete due to early access state.
  • Sword forging mechanics are more akin to a building/simulation tool than a realistic smithing simulator.
  • Some UI and quality of life issues, including clunky controls, lack of key remapping, and repetitive commission designs.
  • story
    599 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The story in this blacksmithing game consistently surprises players with its depth, quality writing, and compelling dark fantasy worldbuilding, often surpassing expectations for the genre. While still in early access and incomplete, the narrative offers engaging characters, meaningful choices, and a strong emotional pull that enhances the gameplay loop. Some note the heavy text and occasional repetition, but overall the story mode provides a gripping, immersive experience that appeals even to those who initially come for the crafting.

    • “The story has a lot of depth to it, and you learn more and more from each conversation and questline you complete.”
    • “Really solid smithing game, the story is a lot stronger than I was expecting.”
    • “The story mode is surprisingly really good and has a lot of choices with consequences you don't expect.”
    • “All the weapons you craft in the story mode will basically be the exact same as the previous 50 you've made, quests are unfinished and rushed, and there is no incentive to play creative mode beyond the first few weapons you made.”
    • “The campaign/story is clunky, not fun, unnecessarily long, and just feels like it doesn't fit well with the smithing gameplay loop.”
    • “Instead, I am met with disappointment because the only QTEs I am getting are asking to get into a castle and clicking to forge a sword. The story mode is decent but all you're doing is just doing what they asked with almost no fun or challenge involved, with the only challenge being to try to make a sharp enough sword by clicking a few times. It has good graphics and multiple ways to design but it is hard to navigate for me and honestly is more of like a book with a 3D modeling software for swords. The creative mode is horrible; there is more action in story mode than creative mode. In creative mode you use sliders to adjust rather than it being story mode but with infinite resources and everything unlocked. If you want to make cool swords this game is good for that, although only for creative mode, but if you wanted a smithing simulator this is not it; this is a sword designing simulator instead. If you were looking for a blacksmith simulator like me do not buy this game unless you like what I said above. Let's just hope I can refund the game because this was not worth the 17 dollars I paid for it.”
  • gameplay
    116 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay in Bladesong is widely praised for its intuitive, engaging swordsmithing mechanics that offer deep customization and creative freedom, making the crafting process satisfying and relaxing. While the core loop and story integration are compelling, some players find the gameplay repetitive and note that smithing lacks more nuanced forging steps, with polish and additional mechanics anticipated in future updates. Overall, it balances simple yet meaningful gameplay with well-executed narrative elements, appealing especially to fans of slower-paced, systems-driven crafting games.

    • “The core gameplay, sword crafting, is well polished, intuitive, and easy to grasp.”
    • “Bladesong turns weapon forging into something that’s genuinely enjoyable, with hands-on mechanics that feel good and an atmosphere that’s calm and cozy.”
    • “I've tried a few of the blacksmithing games, and by far, this one has the best actual sword making mechanics.”
    • “Gameplay gets incredibly repetitive, fast.”
    • “As for the sword 'smithing' gameplay, it's pathetically shallow.”
    • “There is no reason this game should have been released 90% unfinished on story and kind of barebones on gameplay.”
  • graphics
    28 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's graphics are widely praised for their beautiful, stylized dark-fantasy art style, detailed character and environment visuals, and stunning sword designs that create an immersive and atmospheric experience. While the visuals are generally regarded as gorgeous and well-crafted, some users find the graphics demanding on their systems and the interface somewhat difficult to navigate. Overall, the aesthetic quality significantly enhances the game's ambiance and storytelling.

    • “But on the second one, I've instead been served an engaging dark fantasy text adventure set in an extremely interesting dying world filled with interesting characters and intrigue, coupled with beautiful artwork!”
    • “The characters are wonderfully well done and I truly enjoy the ambiance and art style.”
    • “This has beautiful lighting and graphics, and the story is good and has a nice flow.”
    • “My only complaints are that the graphics can be a bit of a burden on your computer.”
    • “Visually, Bladesong adopts a stylized dark-fantasy aesthetic that favors mood and clarity over spectacle.”
  • humor
    11 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The humor in the game is well-received, featuring witty dialogue, amusing character responses, and clever Easter egg references that add charm without overshadowing the mature storyline. Players enjoy creating funny custom content and appreciate the lighthearted moments interspersed throughout the game. Even intentionally bad voice acting can contribute to the game's comedic appeal.

    • “Responses to the main character's dialogue options can be funny, with some witty dialogue from either the main character or the NPC.”
    • “I also love the bits of humor here and there, and easter egg references, like the traveler to Lord of the Rings.”
    • “Bladesong combines game mechanics with a surprisingly mature, raw, and solemn story with the right amount of humor and positivity interspersed.”
  • atmosphere
    10 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The atmosphere is widely praised for its gritty, moody, and immersive qualities that blend realistic medieval design with rich fantasy elements. It effectively conveys a world on the brink through understated art and compelling world-building, creating a weighty and engaging experience. Some entries also highlight a calmer, cozy atmosphere paired with polished mechanics, enhancing the overall enjoyment.

    • “It’s not just grounded, realistic medieval design—it fully embraces its fantasy elements, which really elevates the atmosphere.”
    • “Character art and environments are understated but atmospheric, reinforcing the sense of a world on the brink rather than dazzling with excess detail.”
    • “It's fairly grim and nebulous, dripfed to you through an oppressive, moody atmosphere.”
    • “This ties into the second part of the game, which runs through the business sim in unavoidable atmosphere.”
  • music
    9 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music in the game is praised for its fitting and complementary role, enhancing the atmosphere with restrained, ambient soundscapes that support both focus and tension. While some find the music basic, it effectively elevates the storytelling and overall experience, with excellent sound design and ambience that perfectly capture the game's vibe.

    • “Audio design supports the tone, with restrained music and ambient soundscapes that emphasize focus and contemplation during forging, while adding tension during story beats.”
    • “The developers at Sun and Serpent have absolutely nailed the vibe for this game. The story mode is one of the most interesting campaigns I have played for a long time and has me actually enjoying a story for the first time in a while, and the music for this game is just *chef's kiss*.”
    • “Amazing ambience, not just with a fitting soundtrack, but the overall sound design as well.”
  • optimization
    6 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game offers meaningful optimization features that affect gameplay performance, such as customizing weapons and characters, enhancing strategic depth. While it generally runs smoothly on high-end machines, some users report occasional performance issues and resource-heavy optimization, indicating it may not be well-optimized for lower-end PCs.

    • “Game runs smoothly on my machine, looks great, has a great story and worldbuilding, and above all is just flat out fun.”
    • “But I digress, performance-wise, the game is okay on high-end machines; not sure how it performs on lower-end PCs.”
    • “Game seems fine but poorly optimized; uses way more resources than it should. Sadly, I can't give a neutral review.”
    • “Performance-wise, the game is okay on high-end machines, but I'm not sure how it performs on lower-end PCs.”
    • “These choices are not cosmetic alone, as they directly influence performance metrics such as durability, cutting power, and handling.”
  • grinding
    6 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Grinding in the game is often seen as tedious and repetitive, with many users feeling it lacks depth and immersion. While some find it fun, the process can become monotonous, and there is a desire for more realistic and varied grinding mechanics to enhance the experience.

    • “Fun but lots of grinding.”
    • “Heating, hammering, and quenching could get tedious but it'd add a lot to the immersion.”
    • “I know there is the connection method but it is really tedious.”
  • emotional
    5 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The emotional aspect is praised for its wholesome and evocative tone, creating a strong attachment through the narrative and craftsmanship elements. While some feel the characters, especially those close to the protagonist, lack emotional depth, the integration of sword forging as a meaningful and emotional gameplay mechanic resonates well with players.

    • “Players frequently praise the depth of the forging system, the emotional weight of the narrative, and the novelty of a game that treats craftsmanship as a central dramatic pillar.”
    • “In just a few hours, the sword making became a fun minigame in between emotional story beats.”
    • “There's a sort of emotional attachment you get to each sword when you consider who it's for, and I really enjoyed how evocative the tone and writing are.”
  • stability
    4 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game generally runs well and is stable on various systems, including Linux and lower-end laptops, but it currently has notable bugs, including occasional game-breaking crashes. Despite these issues, the overall performance is smooth and enjoyable, especially for fans of the gameplay.

    • “Runs great on Linux and looks good even on terribly low settings.”
    • “Genuinely impressive, runs great even on my laptop (Lenovo Loq 2025 model, not even the best version they made last year, AMD CPU, 12 GB RAM). Yes, if you're a laptop user, a separate mouse is not optional.”
    • “Runs great, will encounter one game-breaking crash that will reset to the beginning of the day; however, I really don't mind it. I love making the blades so much it's almost not a problem at all.”
    • “But it's so buggy right now.”
  • replayability
    1 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game offers solid replayability initially, but some users feel it may become repetitive after extended playtime, lacking the lasting freshness found in truly great games.
