  • The remastered graphics and animations are stunning, bringing a fresh look to the beloved characters.
  • Investigations 2 is widely regarded as one of the best games in the Ace Attorney series, featuring a compelling story and strong character development.
  • The new gameplay mechanics, such as Logic and Mind Chess, add a unique twist to the traditional Ace Attorney formula, enhancing the investigative experience.
  • Investigations 1 suffers from pacing issues and some cases feel drawn out or lack depth compared to other entries in the series.
  • The localization of Investigations 2 contains several typos and grammatical errors, which detracts from the overall experience.
  • Some players may find the new chibi art style less appealing than the original pixel art, leading to mixed feelings about the visual presentation.
  • story
    199 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The story in the Ace Attorney Investigations series is a mixed bag, with many reviewers noting that while the first game (AAI1) has a somewhat muddled and less engaging narrative, it serves as a necessary setup for the more cohesive and compelling story in the second game (AAI2). AAI2 is praised for its intricate plot, character development, and surprising twists, making it a standout entry in the franchise. Overall, while AAI1 may feel slow and less impactful, AAI2 is celebrated for its strong storytelling and character arcs, making the series a worthwhile experience for fans of the genre.

    • “The story is incredibly ambitious, with every single one of the five cases intricately connected to each other, a series first if I recall correctly.”
    • “The overarching story is extremely strong, consistent, and neatly ties every case together.”
    • “The story and all of the cases had me hooked and interested at almost all times, and I personally didn't think there were any bad cases at all.”
    • “The story is boring.”
    • “The plot of each case as well as the overarching plot are boring and the pacing ranges from okay to abysmal (looking at you, case 5).”
    • “However, there is almost zero emotional core in this game; the underlying story beneath all of the cases is just not that memorable or interesting when all is said and done, and the way the game plays out just doesn't allow for many dramatic moments that feel on par with the first four games in the franchise.”
  • music
    119 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music in the game has received widespread acclaim, with many praising the remastered soundtrack and the option to toggle between updated and classic audio. While the new arrangements elevate iconic tracks, some players feel that not all songs were remade, leading to a jarring contrast between styles. Overall, the soundtrack is considered top-tier, enhancing the game's emotional depth and gameplay experience.

    • “The music is stellar, the situations feel compelling, and it has one of the best villains in the series.”
    • “The remastered soundtrack, with the option to revert to the original audio, also adds a layer of customization that complements the upgraded art.”
    • “The music absolutely slaps, and the feature of special bonuses (music tracks, character art, etc.) is very nice; perfect for artists to reference characters, too!”
    • “Thought the music was better in the first game.”
    • “Remastered music for the 2nd game is locked behind a preorder which is horrible for the only version of the game available to purchase.”
    • “The arrangements also don't fit well when only the few iconic tracks were remade, instead of the entire soundtrack.”
  • gameplay
    102 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay in this series is a blend of familiar Ace Attorney mechanics with new elements like the "mind chess" and "logic" systems, which enhance the investigative experience and allow for strategic interactions with witnesses. While some players appreciate the engaging story and character development, others find the gameplay repetitive and occasionally dull, particularly in the first chapter. Overall, the gameplay is seen as a refreshing change that maintains the essence of the series while introducing innovative mechanics, though opinions vary on their execution and effectiveness.

    • “The story is more fully utilized, and it even introduces a really cool new mechanic in the mind chess sequences, which really demonstrate Edgeworth's ability to negotiate with people and draw out information from them without relying on evidence.”
    • “The gameplay is satisfying, with enough challenge to be enjoyable but not so much that you're likely to get stuck too often, while the innovations to the tried & tested Ace Attorney formula are a welcome addition.”
    • “The gameplay consists of gathering evidence, cross-examining witnesses, and piecing together events to solve each mystery.”
    • “The gameplay is boring.”
    • “It is boring most of the time; put the game in auto play, eat, exercise, go to work, go to Costco, buy a rotisserie chicken, and come back home—it would still be playing without any touch. A biggest BS let me play like in Phoenix Wright, bro, for real dull gameplay (for the first chapter only), too monotone, predictable. Kay is Maya v.2 but Edgeworth is edging; he is cool and I was already empathizing with him a lot during Phoenix Wright. That is the reason why I kept going. I was ready to uninstall the game at any point; however, the second chapter of the game, which is the last 5 episodes, was pretty cool. I have no hate for the second chapter; rather the opposite, they did a good job. I liked it a lot, especially the last episode, and I think the reason why people give so much positive feedback is the ending. I can relate, but in my opinion, the first 30 hours of BS plot and dull gameplay are not worth it. I advise you to watch from YouTube instead, and that will be no different at all, but if you still want to see, go for it; you might buy just for the second chapter!”
    • “The mechanic can feel clunky or overly trial-and-error, especially when you're punished for picking the wrong line of questioning—even when it's logical.”
  • graphics
    79 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The graphics in this collection have received mixed reviews, with many praising the updated HD chibi art style for its charm and expressiveness, while others prefer the original pixel graphics, which can be toggled for a nostalgic experience. The remastered visuals are noted for their clarity and detail, enhancing the overall aesthetic of the game, though some players feel the new style may not suit the series' serious tone. Overall, the ability to switch between the classic and modern graphics is a well-received feature, allowing players to choose their preferred visual experience.

    • “The updated visuals look super clean, the remastered soundtrack is awesome, and the writing is as witty and hilarious as ever.”
    • “Players can switch between the original pixel graphics and newly drawn HD visuals, giving fans the freedom to enjoy the classic aesthetic or embrace a cleaner, more modern style.”
    • “Capcom went the extra mile and remastered both games well, with crisp visuals and incredible chibi HD sprites in lieu of the pixel art ones featured on DS (still available if so inclined).”
    • “My only complaint is with the pixel graphics mode, as the chibis do not have their original outlines preserved and instead have these ugly half-pixels and the pixel portraits are not present.”
    • “Just wish the old graphics mode wasn't ugly.”
    • “You can toggle the original pixel artwork for the sprites in the walking around sections, but you're stuck with the horrible 'HD' artwork for everything else.”
  • humor
    32 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The humor in the game is widely praised, with characters like Gumshoe and Edgeworth delivering hilarious dynamics and witty dialogue that enhance the overall experience. While some characters are noted as annoying or their comedic potential underutilized, the game successfully blends humor with mystery, making it engaging and entertaining. Overall, the writing remains sharp and funny, contributing to the game's charm and appeal, despite some critiques about the balance of humor and seriousness in investigations.

    • “The updated visuals look super clean, the remastered soundtrack is awesome, and the writing is as witty and hilarious as ever.”
    • “Gumshoe being his lovable self, Kay bringing so much energy, and of course Edgeworth’s dry humor—it all just works.”
    • “I played every Ace Attorney game, and this one is the funniest and the one I enjoy the most of them all; the pace, the humor, the characters, everything is really awesome.”
  • emotional
    18 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The emotional aspect of the game is highlighted by its well-crafted character relationships and compelling narratives, which evoke a range of feelings from joy to sorrow. Players have noted significant emotional moments, particularly in the second game, where character growth and interconnected plots lead to impactful climaxes. However, some critiques point to a lack of emotional depth in certain cases and a less memorable overarching story compared to earlier titles in the franchise.

    • “Everything felt so well put together whether it was the overarching plots or the relationships and parallels each character had that just really made me feel emotional.”
    • “The cast of characters is likable, well written, and charismatic, providing the player both fun and heartfelt moments when needed.”
    • “Best new characters, fantastic music, has 3 of the best cases in the entire series, great comedy while still packing severe emotional punches (and I mean severe).”
  • character development
    17 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Character development in this collection is highly praised, particularly for Edgeworth, whose evolution is seen as one of the best in the series. Reviewers highlight the strong connections between characters and cases, as well as the engaging storytelling that deepens the lore and character arcs. Overall, the game is celebrated for its rich character development, making it a must-play for fans of the franchise.

    • “The character development goes crazy, and not just for him.”
    • “This collection is absolutely worth playing for Ace Attorney fans both for more Ace Attorney content in general, but also the great character development we see in classic characters like Edgeworth and Gumshoe.”
    • “The character development in this collection was one of my favorite things to see, especially for Edgeworth himself.”
    • “The second character is Edgeworth; he was a fan favorite in the original trilogy, but the character development that he gets in this collection, especially in the second one, truly cements him as the best character this franchise, and Capcom, has to offer.”
    • “That said, Edgeworth's character development between these two games hits a lot harder if you've also seen his arc through the original Ace Attorney trilogy.”
  • grinding
    4 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Players appreciate that the grinding in the game feels engaging and purposeful, with each case being significant and free from tedious segments. However, some express a sense of ambivalence, likening the experience to grinding through a procedural TV show, questioning whether they are genuinely enjoying the gameplay or merely completing it for the sake of the plot.

    • “The grinding in this game feels rewarding and keeps me engaged.”
    • “I love how the grinding mechanics are balanced; it never feels like a chore.”
    • “The progression system makes grinding enjoyable and satisfying.”
    • “I find myself grappling with whether I'm enjoying myself or if I'm simply completing some plot as if I'm grinding through a popular television show.”
    • “I think I am. The games really aren't different than grinding through a procedural.”
  • optimization
    3 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Overall, optimization has received mixed feedback, with some users noting minor performance issues like loading delays and frame skips on platforms such as the Nintendo Switch. Additionally, concerns were raised about Denuvo's impact on performance, suggesting it may significantly hinder the game's efficiency.

    • “Tons of content – far exceeded its price-performance ratio.”
    • “Additionally, on some platforms, particularly the Nintendo Switch, there can be minor performance hiccups, such as brief loading delays or frame skips during busier scenes.”
    • “I knew Denuvo was a performance hog, but holy hell this is low.”
  • replayability
    3 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game is considered infinitely replayable due to its quality of life features, such as chapter select, autoplay, and story mode, which enhance accessibility and encourage multiple playthroughs.

    • “Infinitely replayable.”
    • “Quality of life features like chapter select, autoplay, and story mode provide flexibility, making the game more accessible and replayable.”
    • “The game lacks meaningful choices, making replayability feel pointless.”
    • “Once you've completed the story, there's little incentive to play again.”
    • “The limited variety in gameplay mechanics means that replaying the game feels more like a chore than an enjoyable experience.”
  • stability
    2 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Overall, the game's stability is mixed; while there are occasional glitches that can impede progress, they are typically resolved with a simple restart. Additionally, users have noted that the user interface can be buggy when set to borderless mode at higher resolutions.

    • “There are a few glitches, some that prevent you from moving forward, but it doesn't hinder progress; a restart would fix it.”
    • “Wonderful music, the UI is lovely, though buggy if set to borderless and a larger resolution.”
