About
Yomawari: Night Alone is a single player survival role playing game with horror, anime and violence themes. It was developed by Nippon Ichi Software, Inc. and was released on October 25, 2016. It received mostly positive reviews from both critics and players.
Yomawari is a Japanese horror action game and features a female protagonist that is searching for her older sister and pet dog, while exploring a creepy town at night. She only has a flashlight at her disposal, and using said flash light will let her “see things that shouldn’t be seen.”
- The game has a unique blend of cute visuals and genuinely creepy, eerie atmosphere, combining a child's perspective with traditional Japanese horror elements.
- The sound design, including the heartbeat mechanic and ambient effects, is exceptional and greatly enhances the tension and immersion without overusing music or jump scares.
- Yomawari: Night Alone features an intriguing, emotionally touching story about a young girl searching for her sister and dog, with collectibles and lore that enrich the experience and encourage exploration.
- The game is plagued by frequent crashes on PC, sometimes making it unplayable or causing players to lose significant progress due to a confusing save system that only saves fully at the protagonist's house.
- Gameplay can be frustrating due to instant death mechanics, difficult stamina management especially when near enemies, and some boss and chase sequences require trial-and-error with tight timing and occasionally unfair hitboxes.
- Navigation and map design are often confusing, with many areas obscured or blocked, and the game gives little guidance on objectives, making exploration sometimes tedious or frustrating, especially coupled with repetitive deaths and long backtracking.

The story of the game is generally described as simple, emotionally engaging, and atmospheric, focusing on a young girl's journey to find her missing sister and dog. While some reviewers find the narrative vague, minimalist, and open to interpretation—often relying on environmental storytelling and collectibles for deeper lore—it is praised for its poignant themes of mortality, growth, and kindness amid darkness. However, the story is also noted as short and sometimes overshadowed by repetitive gameplay and a lack of detailed plot development, making it more of a framing device enriched by Japanese folklore than a complex narrative.
“As a narrative, it does a good job at telling its story with very few words, of a girl coming to understand the gravity of her world.”
“The main story is told through the normal game progression, but at the same time several items scattered across the map offer the player a series of mini stories that contextualize the origin of most spirits and give a greater sense of immersion.”
“Even with all of the flaws I still recommend this game for its unique story and memorable intro for anyone who is willing to look past its flaws and is persistent enough to complete the main story.”
“The story is barebone and the mechanics won't keep you around either.”
“So much of the game is just running around aimlessly just hoping to stumble upon something to maybe help progress some part of the story which becomes tedious and obnoxious.”
“The story is generic and typical, the map is empty and boring, the enemies are asinine and tedious; while all the unique mechanics are either unused or just make the game more annoying.”
Yomawari: Night Alone Review
Billed as a horror game, Yomawari: Night Alone ultimately feels like it falls more on the side of tragedy. Sure, it has its jump scares which can get the blood racing, but the town and its supernatural inhabitants just feel a little too charming to be considered a real threat. The story, with its sad undertones, will definitely tug at the heart strings the more that it unfolds - far more frequently than it'll scare you, especially once you become accustomed to the ghost's surprise visits. Yomawari is satisfying in its own weird way, but those looking for a good scare may be disappointed that any potential threat is short-lived.

Yomawari: Night Out is the definition of survival horror, trapped with nothing to defend yourself with against horrors that await around every corner. Yomawari may be light on jump scares but the creatures, sound design, and atmosphere is enough to creep anyone out.
