  • gameplay
    30 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay is straightforward and minimalist, featuring simple yet well-designed mechanics with a retro 8/16-bit RPG feel that emphasizes exploration, puzzles, and strategic but basic combat. Multiple classes and endings add replay value, though some find the combat and leveling systems shallow or grindy. Overall, it offers a concise, enjoyable experience with charming atmospheres and interesting lore that appeals especially to fans of classic RPGs.

    • “The three different classes and how they interact with the pyramid combined with the multiple ways to solve problems and differences in endings provide a good deal of replay value, adding up to at least seven hours of gameplay if you go through once for each class.”
    • “Even with such simple mechanics at play, the combat is very strategic; players of tough single-hero RPGs like Dragon Warrior 1 will feel right at home.”
    • “It strips the dungeon crawler RPG elements to a minimalist, barebones approach that resembles mechanics you might find in an early to mid 80s CRPG for IBM or Apple II, with a relatively tiny game world to explore.”
    • “Gameplay consists of choosing from one of three available classes, then bumbling around dungeons from a 2D top-down perspective, doing skill challenges and RPG fights, and booking to see an optometrist because the jaggy pixel art damaged your eyes.”
    • “Only gripe is with the very weak combat / leveling mechanics, which basically become a grind with almost no player decisions.”
    • “Very barebones in terms of gameplay features (your options in combat are attack or use an item) but for what it is it's very concise and fairly well put together.”
  • graphics
    24 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game features simple, retro pixel art with a distinctive and quirky aesthetic that may initially seem unpolished but grows on players, contributing to its unique charm. While the graphics are minimalist and occasionally rough, especially in battle scenes, they effectively support the game's atmospheric and nostalgic vibe. Fans of retro-style visuals and symbolic, detail-rich worlds will appreciate the art direction despite its intentional simplicity and technical limitations.

    • “Its aesthetic is very uncommon and might look ugly at first but it grows on you and gives it a very particular vibe.”
    • “It has simple but surprisingly well-defined pixel graphics, making it easy to see where secrets are tucked away once you figure out what to look for and it's not hard to figure out what to look for.”
    • “The graphics are minimalist but done with style and originality, with a lot of bright pastels contrasting with brown and yellow neutral tones.”
    • “They chose to use obsolete retro pixel art as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics.”
    • “While a lot of effort went into filling the game templates for ohrrpgce, the limitations of the engine and the choice to use retro pixel art instead of contemporary video game graphics are major detractors.”
    • “Potential points of criticism are the battle instances, which don't quite aesthetically match the rest of the game (the backgrounds look like they were designed in MS Paint).”
  • music
    23 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's music is widely praised for its catchy, thematic, and well-crafted soundtrack that enhances the atmosphere and complements the retro art style. While some find certain tracks repetitive or initially annoying, the overall consensus highlights the music as a strong, appealing feature that contributes to the game's unique and immersive experience.

    • “Great music, amazing aesthetic, intriguing and in-depth lore, and fun but simple mechanics.”
    • “The music and sounds together have a trippy, somewhat psychedelic feeling and add to the atmosphere of the game without being obtrusive.”
    • “Void Pyramid is a pretty great RPG; it’s got great music, a unique setting, and all-around decent gameplay, and I strongly recommend anyone looking for a free indie RPG to try it out.”
    • “The music gets annoying as hell in the first area, but you can turn it down.”
    • “Potential points of criticism are the battle instances, which don't quite aesthetically match the rest of the game (as someone said it looks a little like the backgrounds were designed in MSPaint), and the music, which is variously essentially 15-30 seconds of beats on repeat, but alternatively this apparent amateurness could be a charm.”
    • “Music consists of a few melodies in MIDI-style that underscore different environments of the pyramid-prison complex.”
  • grinding
    19 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Grinding is a notable aspect of the game, with some players finding it necessary for progression and late-game challenges, while others see it as a potential obstacle or tedious chore. Though the grind can feel clunky or repetitive, it is balanced by unique combat mechanics, alternative ways to avoid fights, and a well-crafted world, making it more tolerable for those who don’t mind farming stats or currency. Overall, grinding is present but not overwhelming, and it supports the game's depth and replayability.

    • “Because of how stat growth works, fighting the optional true final boss without grinding will get you quickly slaughtered, as he heals for damage done, but with some grinding, he can be defeated in a single turn.”
    • “You'll need additional lives to effectively grind and improve your stats.”
    • “Grinding is essential to balance the difficulty between being too easy and too hard against tough bosses.”
    • “The only thing that I didn't really like very much was the late-game grinding.”
    • “Rather grindy in a clunky fashion but this game struck a chord with me.”
    • “Don't get this game if you don't like grinding for money.”
