Thrasher

THRASHER is hands-down one of the coolest-feeling, most entrancing and memorable VR experiences I've had in some time. With a simple enough concept backed up by gorgeous presentation and the same gleefully unnerving vibe that made Thumper so compelling, it's an absolute trip and a thoroughly impressive use of hand tracking on the Meta Quest.

  • Unique and psychedelic audiovisual presentation with trippy, surreal visuals and a dynamic electronic soundtrack that enhances immersion.
  • Engaging and fluid gameplay mechanics centered on guiding a space eel through abstract levels, incorporating combos and power-ups for skillful play and replayability.
  • Optimized for VR offering the best immersive experience, though also playable with mouse or controller, with smooth performance on various systems.
  • Some level design relies heavily on randomness and gimmicks, causing frustration due to lack of predictable patterns and unfair difficulty spikes in later levels.
  • Visual clutter and fast pace can reduce clarity, making it hard to distinguish obstacles and gameplay elements, especially for players with visual impairments.
  • Gameplay and control schemes feel less polished and deeper than predecessor Thumper, leading to mixed opinions on replay value and overall engagement.

The gameplay of Thrasher is an inventive blend of rhythm-based action resembling Fruit Ninja with added power abilities and evolving mechanics that keep the experience engaging, especially within VR for immersion. While the learning curve and scoring systems offer a satisfying depth for speedrunning enthusiasts, some players find certain mechanics imprecise and the late-game RNG elements frustrating, leading to occasional repetitiveness and difficulty spikes. Overall, its intuitive yet fast-paced gameplay shines with audiovisual synergy, though it may not appeal to those seeking narrative depth or highly varied mechanics.

    • “The gameplay feels like a mix between a rhythm game, Fruit Ninja, Metal Gear Solid: Revengeance, Beat Saber, and OSU.”
    • “Little by little, new mechanics are introduced, such as time slowdown, a dash that destroys obstacles, energy bullets, or a sphere that wipes out everything in its path.”
    • “I really like the scoring combo system and gameplay Thrasher has because it makes leaderboard scoring more fluid requiring you to use different tactics to get the highest score before the end of the wave.”
    • “A couple of issues I found with Thrasher are that some mechanics or abilities aren’t explained very well or require surgical precision, which—considering the speed of the game—can become frustrating when you fail and all you see is the timer ticking down.”
    • “Although it's made by Brian Gibson, the drive creative lead and sole composer behind Thumper's bizarre, fascinating style of gameplay, aesthetic, and sound design, Thrasher simply does not play as well as Thumper, for several reasons.”
    • “The reason for this is two-fold: the RNG constantly messing you up without any real mistakes from your side, and the later levels having gimmicks that enormously interfere with the core gameplay of going through lines/circles while circling obstacles for score.”
  • music

32% positive mentions, 58% neutral mentions, 10% negative mentions

The music in the game is widely praised for its dynamic, electronic, and techno-inspired soundtrack that immerses players and drives the gameplay's intensity. Many highlight the distinctive and evolving themes across worlds, with a stronger melodic focus compared to its predecessor, making it both engaging in-game and enjoyable for casual listening. Overall, the soundtrack is considered a standout feature that significantly enhances the game's atmosphere and replayability.

    • “The music doesn’t simply accompany the gameplay—it drives it, reinforcing the tempo and intensity of each sequence and making the entire experience feel cohesive and immersive.”
    • “The soundtrack of Thrasher is one of the best I've ever heard!”
    • “Paired with this is a dynamic soundtrack that plays a central role in shaping the experience.”
    • “While the dark, brooding rhythms of Thumper were very infectious, the music wasn't really conducive for casual listening, and could get pretty repetitive throughout the course of the game.”
    • “The music also didn't capture me like it did in Tetris Effect.”
    • “I would have liked to see some mod support or an in-game editor for people to add their own music or create levels to share (like Spin Rhythm XD), that would have added even more replay value.”
  • graphics

The game's graphics feature vivid, psychedelic, and often Lovecraftian visuals that create a strong sense of immersion, especially in VR where the art style shines brightest. While not universally appealing to all players and sometimes challenging for orientation, the visuals are widely praised for their creativity, variety, and seamless integration with sound and gameplay, though some comparisons find it less polished than the developer's previous title, Thumper. Overall, the graphics stand out as a masterful and innovative aspect that greatly enhances the experience.

    • “I played it in VR and I consider it the best way to experience it thanks to its incredible visuals, but it’s also very fun and challenging with the other control methods.”
    • “The environments are drenched in vivid, almost psychedelic visuals, filled with shifting geometric forms and strange, organic shapes that seem to pulse in time with the action.”
    • “As we've come to expect from Brian Gibson, the background visuals are gorgeous as well, and easily stand toe-to-toe with the psychedelic insanity of his previous game, even surpassing it at many points in terms of variety.”
    • “Think the only issue I have is the visuals aren’t ideal for the primary target.”
    • “These visuals are not just decorative; they actively influence how you perceive space and movement, sometimes enhancing immersion and at other times challenging your ability to stay oriented.”
    • “I hate that this dev is going to have Thumper following them forever, but it's for a good reason, and I hope they either go back to rhythm games or continue making new ideas... just maybe not in VR next time since it doesn't do their art style justice.”
  • story

    7 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
29% positive mentions, 71% neutral mentions, 0% negative mentions

The game "Thrasher" lacks a conventional story, focusing instead on abstract arcade gameplay centered around sensation, rhythm, and movement. Its design prioritizes immersive VR experiences rather than narrative depth.

    • “Thrasher, developed by Puddle and published by Creature Label, is an unapologetically abstract arcade experience that prioritizes sensation, rhythm, and movement over conventional storytelling or structure.”
  • optimization

    5 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
60% positive mentions, 20% neutral mentions, 20% negative mentions

The game offers excellent optimization, delivering smooth and consistent performance even on high-end hardware like the RTX 5090 and RTX 3090, with no noticeable frame drops. Its technical stability supports an uninterrupted gameplay flow, enhancing the overall experience for players who enjoy refining their skills within the existing framework.

    • “From a technical standpoint, the game generally maintains a smooth performance, which is essential given how much it relies on uninterrupted flow.”
    • “The performance of this game is absolutely phenomenal - following in the footsteps of Thumper, both in audio and visuals.”
    • “The good: performance is insane - no frame dips even super-sampling to 45 million pixels per frame combining both eyes with the Index and RTX 3090.”
    • “The enjoyment largely depends on how much you appreciate refining your performance within the same framework rather than seeking entirely new gameplay systems.”
  • replayability

    4 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
50% positive mentions, -25% neutral mentions, 75% negative mentions

Replayability is driven primarily by the game’s high skill ceiling, combo/ranking systems, and varied power-ups, appealing to players who enjoy mastering levels for high scores. However, those less interested in score-chasing may find limited replay value without features like custom levels or mod support, which are currently absent but would enhance longevity.

    • “The skill ceiling is quite high, and combo/ranking systems promote replayability.”
    • “I would have liked to see some mod support or an in-game editor for people to add their own music or create levels to share (like Spin Rhythm XD), that would have added even more replay value.”
    • “If repeating levels to get a high score is not your preferred playstyle, you won't get a whole lot of replay value out of it, unless custom levels ever come around (again like Thumper), but I think it's worth at least one playthrough.”
    • “I would have liked to see some mod support or an in-game editor for people to add their own music or create levels to share (like Spin Rhythm XD), which would have added even more replay value.”
    • “The replayability of Thrasher for me is mainly the game's OST and different power-ups you get later on when playing through the levels.”
  • atmosphere

    3 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
100% positive mentions, 0% neutral mentions, 0% negative mentions

The atmosphere is tense and unsettling, driven by electronic and techno synth music with heavy percussion and a fast tempo. It closely resembles the vibe found in Thumper, making the music and overall ambiance a major highlight of the game.

    • “The music, built around electronic and techno synths with heavy percussion and a fast tempo, adds to the tense and unsettling atmosphere.”
    • “If you are familiar with Thumper, you can expect a similar atmosphere while playing.”
    • “The main appeal is the music and atmosphere, which are great.”
  • humor
