  • Faithful adaptation of The Eminence in Shadow anime with additional lore and side stories, appreciated by fans of the series.
  • Generous free currency distribution allowing free-to-play progression and regular events with good rewards.
  • Polished presentation including full voice acting, 3D character models, stylish animations, and engaging interaction with characters.
  • Gameplay is largely automated and repetitive, offering minimal player interaction and strategic depth.
  • Gacha system has very low drop rates and is heavily pay-to-win with expensive pulls and high grinding requirements.
  • Technical issues including constant updates/download loops, crashes, lack of fullscreen mode, and poor optimization, especially on PC.
  • story
    63 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's story is highly praised for its faithful adaptation of the anime and original content, including new character backstories and expanded lore supervised by the original author, making it especially rewarding for fans. Its visual novel style and full voice acting enhance immersion, though some find the storytelling slow or overly reliant on anime clips. While engaging, the story experience can be hindered by frustrating game mechanics and heavy grind, limiting its appeal beyond dedicated fans.

    • “Faithful to the original work: the game incorporates the story, humor, and characters from the anime, manga, and light novel, making it a real treat for fans of Cid and Shadow Garden.”
    • “The plot of this work was personally written and supervised by the original author of the novel, Daisuke Aizawa, ensuring its quality.”
    • “Completely original storylines, such as the Seven Shadows Chronicles, also give more screen time to many beloved characters who had little appearance or development in the original work.”
    • “Story quickly becomes a forgettable grind, even for fans of source material.”
    • “One of the most ridiculous and boring stories I have ever seen.”
    • “If the start was not such a spoon-fed babying experience designed for players who have never played a game in their lives, and if the opening also wasn't filled with a massive amount of exposition and movies telling a boring as hell story, and if the opening didn't put you off with the amount of loading time after it has already downloaded a full game's worth of data it seemingly is not using, and also didn't slowly... very slowly, show you a whole plethora of pictures showing what you may eventually get to should they let you play, this may be a barely average game worth playing if you have nothing better to do.”
  • gameplay
    45 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay is largely automated, repetitive, and lacks significant skill-based or strategic depth, appealing mainly to fans of the IP rather than players seeking engaging mechanics. While some appreciate the deep progression and team optimization typical of JRPG/gacha games, many criticize it for being passive, overly reliant on auto-battle, and offering minimal player interaction beyond gacha pulls. Overall, gameplay is casual and accessible but considered lackluster and grind-heavy compared to other titles in the genre.

    • “JRPG/gacha enthusiasts appreciate the deep progression systems, team compositions, and combo mechanics to optimize rather than pure action gameplay.”
    • “Rose Oriana stands out as particularly popular and provides excellent gameplay versatility, making her an exceptional reason to try this game.”
    • “This helps players efficiently manage the game's slower animations by increasing gameplay speed to 2x or even 5x.”
    • “Gameplay gets repetitive and boring.”
    • “The fully automated combat and the rudimentary, mechanical, and repetitive actions of the characters provide no visual appeal whatsoever.”
    • “Gameplay is repetitive, auto-battle focused, and offers little strategic depth.”
  • grinding
    13 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Grinding in the game is a mixed experience—early progression can feel slow and tedious, with some mandatory daily tasks and resource gating that may require extensive time investment or payment to advance effectively. While later stages offer skip functions and auto-play to reduce repetitive grinding, fully maxing out characters remains a lengthy, repetitive process that can span months. Overall, grinding is manageable but can become a significant time sink, especially without in-game purchases.

    • “The game contains complex modes; while the skip function could alleviate the daily grinding burden in the mid-to-late period, it cannot change the long and tedious early-farming progression. Some unskippable PvP daily tasks also waste a lot of time.”
    • “The game is heavily pay to win. You will eventually hit a wall where no matter what you do, you cannot progress without either grinding for months to awaken your base characters, or shelling out money to get better ones that you still need to awaken through copious grinding.”
    • “Equipment upgrades are gated behind timers and resource farming, which slows progression to a crawl if you're not paying.”
  • graphics
    11 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game features clean UI, appealing art style, and slick visuals with flashy combat animations that capture the anime's edgy vibe well, though the story mode relies heavily on reused anime clips. While the graphics are generally praised as good and iconic, especially for fans, performance issues like a non-functional 60 fps option and lack of PC-specific graphical improvements have been noted. Overall, the visuals are enjoyable but unevenly distributed, with some cinematic 3D scenes spaced far apart.

    • “Eminence in the Shadow: Master of Garden delivers a highly satisfying story and visuals, especially for fans of the anime.”
    • “As a fan of the Eminence in Shadow, the game nails the edgy-but-fun vibe, with slick visuals, flashy combat animations, and plenty of fanservice for fans.”
    • “The graphics look great, and the cinema when 3D cutscenes happen is great, but it's an absolute shame that those particular elements are so spaced apart.”
    • “The graphics are identical to mobile — no improvements for PC hardware.”
    • “This work suffers from severe power creep between new and old characters; the story mode almost entirely utilizes clips and visuals from the anime for its presentation, resulting in a very perfunctory experience.”
    • “The UI is clean, the visuals are decent, and the voice acting is good.”
  • monetization
    10 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Monetization in the game is heavily focused on aggressive gacha mechanics and frequent ads, creating a strong pay-to-win atmosphere that many find off-putting. While it offers generous free currency and in-game purchases are not mandatory to complete the story, the intrusive ads and poor gacha rates detract from the overall experience.

    • “The game does have in-game purchases that help speed up the story's progression, but otherwise it is not needed to complete the game.”
    • “The game's main interface frequently displays ads designed to induce in-game purchasing.”
    • “Gacha rates are abysmal, constantly pushing for microtransactions.”
    • “I knew there’d be monetization baked in, and yes—paying players have a clear advantage.”
  • optimization
    8 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game features generally good optimization, running smoothly on PC and Steam Deck, with fewer bugs and better performance than on mobile. However, the 60 fps option is reportedly non-functional, and the PC experience favors mouse use over keyboard. Mobile versions are also well-optimized, including exclusive features like "shadowgram."

    • “The game has an excellent PC port, which runs smoothly after an initially lengthy download.”
    • “Performance on mobile is similarly polished, with exclusive mobile features such as 'shadowgram,' a social interaction tool.”
    • “The game is optimized for the Steam Deck, though using a mouse greatly enhances usability.”
    • “This game is graphically good, but it needs improvement because the 60 fps option doesn't work, and the performance stats still show 30 fps.”
    • “Not optimized for PC; keyboard is useless - mouse only.”
    • “Play on PC just to experience the full performance.”
  • music
    4 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music is generally praised for its iconic and heavier tracks, but some users find it repetitive and wish for more control, such as the ability to disable loud download music or permanently set main menu background tracks.

    • “The graphics and the musical moments, especially the heavier stuff, remain iconic.”
    • “Music is good but repetitive.”
    • “This download comes with very loud music you can't turn off during the download (had to go to volume mixer to mute).”
    • “You can't set the main menu character's background permanently as it is instead random so instead of listening to some of the high relationship level character tracks, you listen to the two same songs all the time.”
  • humor
    3 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's humor remains true to the original anime/manga/light novel, delighting fans with its witty story and characters. Players particularly enjoy amusing events like the amnesia scenario, which adds a fun and entertaining touch to the experience.

    • “Faithful to the original work: the game incorporates the story, humor, and characters from the anime/manga/light novel, making it a real treat for fans of Cid and Shadow Garden.”
    • “The amnesia event is just plain funny.”
    • “The game itself is nice, the storyline is interesting and fun, characters and visuals are beautiful.”
  • emotional
    2 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The emotional aspect of the game is mixed, with some players appreciating the interactive lobby that fosters meaningful character interactions, while others criticize the story as boring and unengaging.

    • “The lobby allows players to interact and converse with characters, bringing rich emotional value.”
    • “One of the most ridiculous and boring stories I have ever seen.”
  • character development
    2 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Character development is highlighted by fantastic and detailed character designs that enhance the visual appeal. While combat remains simple yet strategic, the emphasis on well-crafted characters adds depth and enjoyment for players who value detailed aesthetics.
