The music in "Tengami" is widely praised for its soothing and atmospheric qualities, effectively enhancing the game's tranquil aesthetic and Japanese-inspired visuals. While many players appreciate the beautiful soundtrack composed by David Wise, some note that it can be repetitive and occasionally cuts off abruptly, disrupting the immersive experience. Overall, the combination of calming music and stunning art creates a relaxing environment, making it a highlight of the game despite its short length and simplistic puzzles.

    • “The music is very calming, the sound effects are spot on, the visuals are perfect (pagoda & torii gates especially) so if you're looking to relax for a while, this is the next best thing to meditating.”
    • “The music and the art are both quite lovely.”
    • “The soundtrack is beautiful and goes really well with the ambient.”
    • “The music gets a little bland and tedious in places, but it's fine.”

The graphics of *Tengami* are widely praised for their stunning, unique pop-up book aesthetic, which beautifully integrates traditional Japanese art styles and watercolor visuals. Many reviewers highlight the calming atmosphere created by the visuals and accompanying soundtrack, making it a visually immersive experience, despite some criticism regarding the game's pacing and simplistic gameplay. • “Tengami is a beautifully crafted experience, recreating that tactile feel of a pop-up book in a new medium and elevating it with impressive visuals and an incredible soundscape.”
    • “The graphics style is enjoyable for a few minutes, but then you'll start noticing the full blue/full green/full white/full red landscapes, and the lack of details.”
    • “The simplistic graphics fail to captivate, presenting a hollow and uninteresting visual landscape.”
    • “The lack of an engaging storyline leaves players disconnected and uninvested in the game, while the visuals feel excessively barren, failing to create a compelling atmosphere.”
    • “It's clear that so much work went into the aesthetic choices for this game, but it just falls a bit flat as a game.”
  • gameplay
    250 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay of Tengami is characterized by its unique pop-up book mechanics and point-and-click adventure style, offering a serene and visually stunning experience. However, many players find the puzzles to be simplistic and the overall gameplay too short, typically lasting around 1-2 hours, which leads to a sense of missed potential for deeper engagement. While the atmosphere and art are praised, the gameplay often feels passive and lacking in challenge, making it more of an artistic experience than a compelling game.

    • “The puzzles start out slow and simple to ease you into the pop-up book mechanics, but quickly ramp up in difficulty - building on previous challenges, and using the folding gimmick in deviously creative ways.”
    • “The gameplay focuses on exploration, not puzzles, and the way the story is told together with the gameplay mechanics is quite unique and new to me.”
    • “Tengami combines the gameplay of a point-and-click adventure with the visuals of a pop-up book together into one neat, small little package.”
    • “The gameplay is very slow-paced and not particularly exciting.”
    • “Moreover, the slow and cumbersome navigation further detracts from the gameplay, leading to a frustrating and tedious experience.”
    • “The gameplay is almost non-existent.”
  • story
    213 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The story in Tengami is minimal and often described as vague or abstract, primarily conveyed through beautiful visuals and a few haiku poems rather than a traditional narrative. While some players appreciate the emotional and atmospheric elements tied to Japanese culture, many feel the lack of depth and engagement in the storyline detracts from the overall experience. Overall, the game is seen more as an artistic journey than a compelling story-driven adventure.

    • “A very unique and beautifully crafted game, presented like a 3D pop-up storybook that unfolds as you play.”
    • “The story itself is simple but emotional — quiet, reflective, and surprisingly moving.”
    • “Tengami is a visually beautiful, intimate story based on Japanese culture, distinguished by point and click adventure gameplay.”
    • “There isn't any story really, it's just you as a samurai roaming around and finding cherry blossom leaves to put them on a dead tree.”
    • “The story, if it existed at all, wasn't compelling and the game just felt empty and meaningless.”
    • “The problem is: there's no story, no plot, no evolution, nothing at all.”
  • atmosphere
    124 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The atmosphere of the game is widely praised for its calming and meditative qualities, enhanced by beautiful visuals and a soothing soundtrack that evokes a serene Japanese aesthetic. Many players appreciate the artistic pop-up book style and the immersive experience it provides, although some criticize the slow pacing and lack of engaging gameplay, which can detract from the overall experience. Overall, the game is recommended for those seeking a relaxing journey through its enchanting atmosphere, despite its brevity and simplicity.

    • “The art style is delicate and elegant, and the atmosphere feels calm and almost meditative.”
    • “The music and sound effects set the atmosphere well and make the game quite relaxing.”
    • “The wonderfully natural atmosphere of the game is complemented by the twanging of shamisen or koto and calming sounds of wooden flute, all drawing you into a zen-like state of deep calmness.”
    • “It feels less like time to immerse yourself in the atmosphere (which in my opinion could've been stronger), and more like artificial padding.”
    • “Unfortunately, the idea, aesthetics, and atmosphere are stronger than the game itself as a whole.”
    • “It’s especially tragic here, where the art and gorgeous music want to create a soothing atmosphere, and yet here I am bored and looking at my phone while my character walks from A to B.”
  • grinding
    33 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Overall, players find the grinding aspect of the game to be tedious and frustrating, primarily due to slow character movement and repetitive puzzle-solving that detracts from the experience. While some puzzles are engaging, many are described as dull and lacking challenge, leading to a sense of monotony throughout the gameplay. Despite the beautiful visuals and unique concepts, the slow pace and tedious navigation significantly impact player enjoyment.

    • “The puzzles are not particularly challenging, but not tedious either.”
    • “I recommend this game to anybody who is interested in an adventure/puzzle game that is not tediously long; or to somebody who is looking for a nice change of pace.”
    • “Moreover, the slow and cumbersome navigation further detracts from the gameplay, leading to a frustrating and tedious experience.”
    • “It doesn't take long before it becomes extremely tedious (and I didn't see a way to speed him up).”
    • “Walking can be a bit tedious and the music randomly cuts off, but overall lovely to play if you're in the mood for a slow-paced game.”
  • replayability
    20 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Overall, the game is criticized for its low replayability, with many reviewers noting its short playtime of 1-2 hours and lack of varied content or challenges in subsequent playthroughs. Despite its artistic merits, players feel that the absence of collectibles, achievements, or changing puzzles significantly diminishes the incentive to replay. Many recommend waiting for a sale or bundle due to the limited replay value relative to its price.

    • “That one I can highly recommend for style, writing, length, replayability, and all-around enjoyment.”
    • “Certainly neither action-packed nor valued for its replayability - yet this game was very much worth that cheap price it came with.”
    • “Portal, Monument Valley, and others are very much like this, but if you are looking for a game that offers more staying power or hours upon hours of replayability, you may want to look somewhere else.”
    • “I don't think there's much depth to the game or its story, so replay value is probably low.”
    • “Because the game is very short - finished it in one sitting of 90 minutes, getting all the achievements - and has no replay value.”
    • “But the game is very short, between one and two hours, without replay value.”
  • emotional
    6 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The emotional aspect of the game is highlighted as simple yet deeply moving, offering a reflective experience that resonates with players. While the story and music contribute to its emotional depth, some reviewers feel that additional content and context could enhance immersion and emotional connections. • “$10 for one hour of gameplay (click. wait. click. wait. drag.) and super buggy sound.”
  • humor
    3 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The humor in the game receives mixed feedback; while some players find it amusing, others feel it falls flat or is overshadowed by confusion regarding gameplay. Overall, the comedic elements may appeal to some, but they do not resonate universally with all players.

    • “Good short game, only bad thing about it is that you can't save, also funny.”
    • “If you are in need of an adrenaline fix, deep meaning, humor, or cathartic hack-and-slash, continue your journey, oh digital wanderer.”
