Sunderfolk

Sunderfolk’s attempt at bringing the tabletop RPG experience to the living room TV screen is difficult to find fault with. Its clever use of mobile devices does a great job at capturing the tactile nature of true tabletop gaming, resulting in a surprisingly faithful adaptation of the full game night experience. The story may be a little generic, and the standard difficulty option may be a little undertuned, relative to how successful Sunderfolk is in achieving its vision elsewhere. For anyone, like me, who struggles to find the time or motivation to unpack their favourite tabletop behemoth and endure the inevitable setup and breaking down phase, Sunderfolk is a truly wonderful alternative that works better than it has any right to.

  • Innovative use of phone app as controller enables easy local and remote couch co-op, allowing up to 4 players to play with only one copy of the game.
  • Fun and approachable turn-based tactical RPG with engaging combat and strategic depth, suitable for both beginners and experienced players.
  • Charming art style, polished animations, unique characters, and a warm, inviting story with strong voice acting that mimics a tabletop RPG atmosphere.
  • Phone app as the mandatory controller can be clunky, awkward, and inconvenient for some players, especially those preferring traditional PC controls.
  • The story is considered childish, generic, or simplistic by some players, with repetitive and sometimes lengthy dialogues that many skip.
  • Boss fights, particularly the final boss, are often seen as poorly balanced, overly difficult or featuring frustrating mechanics that negatively impact coop play.
  • story

    538 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
27% positive mentions, 71% neutral mentions, 2% negative mentions

The story in the game is generally described as simple, family-friendly, and somewhat generic, with charming animal characters and a lighthearted, cohesive narrative that connects missions. While some players find it engaging and well-voiced, others consider it childish, bland, or tedious, though its shorter, streamlined nature suits casual or co-op play sessions. Overall, the story serves more as a pleasant backdrop to the varied tactical missions and cooperative gameplay rather than a deeply immersive or complex narrative experience.

    • “Sunderfolk is a heartfelt digital tabletop-like experience that masterfully balances strategy, story, and social gameplay.”
    • “The storytelling is wonderfully executed, and the story itself, while on the shorter side, is very well written and really pulls you into the world it builds.”
    • “At its best, Sunderfolk feels like four friends standing around a shared map, smiling as they turn strategy into story.”
    • “The story the game tells in cutscenes between missions is so simple and childish it's actually a bit off-putting to play as an adult.”
    • “The plot and the dialogues.... oh boy... they are "family friendly", so yeah, your kid can play this with you all right - but they are bland, generic, unimaginative and "safe" to the point of putting Teletubbies or Thomas the Tank Engine to shame.”
    • “The story is completely forgettable yet told through stultifying dialogue that you are essentially forced to participate in. Yes, you can skip it, but you might miss out on mission briefings you actually need.”
  • gameplay

    346 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
40% positive mentions, 59% neutral mentions, 1% negative mentions

Sunderfolk offers a streamlined, accessible tactical RPG experience inspired by Gloomhaven, featuring turn-based combat with card-driven mechanics that balance strategic depth and ease of use. Its innovative phone-as-controller system enhances social couch co-op gameplay, allowing players to manage characters intuitively while fostering teamwork and synergy. While some mechanics and difficulty balancing receive minor criticism, overall the gameplay is praised for being engaging, fun, and well-suited for both newcomers and veterans seeking a lighter, polished cooperative dungeon-crawl experience.

    • “Sunderfolk's gameplay is solid. The combat mechanics don't get particularly complex, but they don't need to be for the missions to stay fresh and interesting.”
    • “Its innovative phone-as-controller interface, layered yet accessible mechanics, rich audio narration, and communal design all coalesce into one of the most memorable co‑op experiences in recent memory.”
    • “The unique mechanics of controlling with your phone make it feel very inclusive to sit down in the same room as your friends and have a great old time playing; would recommend to anyone wanting a DnD experience with less effort than your normal DnD session.”
    • “It feels very clunky in combat mechanics.”
    • “The game will let you go into a mission without equipment, won't let you restart a round, and introduce mechanics that go against previous mechanics.”
    • “You can still disable it for certain difficulties or simply not use it but having to quit the game and restart it as a silly workaround for this just because you misclicked or, and this is very frustrating for anyone who is new to the game which is literally everyone at some point, because you didn't know certain mechanics/behaviors and/or wanted to test them, is ridiculous.”
  • graphics

    116 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
68% positive mentions, 29% neutral mentions, 3% negative mentions

The game features a charming, colorful art style with cute, well-designed characters and polished 2D and 3D visuals that effectively complement its tactical gameplay. Graphics are generally praised for their clarity, stylistic cohesion, and accessibility, though some note they are modest or somewhat basic compared to AAA standards. Overall, the visuals richly enhance the cooperative and board-game-inspired experience, making the game inviting and immersive for a wide range of players.

    • “Every part of this is spectacular, from the gorgeously hand-drawn cards, the detailed 3D graphics, the immersive voice acting (most of which was done by the talented Anjali Bhimani!), and the addicting gameplay!”
    • “The colors are vibrant and full, the art style for the drawings is stunning and the 3D animation style complements the 2D and really translates the beauty of the game's drawn artwork extremely well.”
    • “The art style is great, with unique characters that visually signify their abilities at a glance; the NPCs in town were also lovable, from rude and pretentious, rude with a hard exterior to crack and then a loving interior (Zuri my girl) all the way to the classic nice guys.”
    • “Graphically the game is also lo-fi. Not as an aesthetic choice. It smacks of mobile-level graphics, thrown over to a PC, and all the controls for the game are still on the mobile! For reference, I am not on a toaster; I play AAA games on high settings and have no issues with games much more graphically intensive.”
    • “The graphical demands are low and still pretty. Default the game to high graphics mode. ~ graphics are basic.”
    • “Graphics feel a tad outdated in 2025 but it has an undeniable charm to it, along with the DM narration & voices.”
  • humor

    42 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
100% positive mentions, 0% neutral mentions, 0% negative mentions

The game's humor shines through its witty, lighthearted dialogue, charming voice acting, and playful cutscenes, creating a fun and approachable atmosphere. A standout feature is the ability to rename characters, items, and locations, fostering hilarious inside jokes and personalized moments, especially in group play. Overall, the humor balances cute, chaotic, and occasionally immature tones, making it an enjoyable, laugh-filled experience.

    • “The ability to rename certain characters and items is funny literally every time because we're all 12.”
    • “It was also an absolutely genius move to allow players to rename certain story elements; I do that as a game master in my own IRL TTRPG games, and it allows for the creation of hilarious inside jokes.”
    • “Playing with remote friends has been a blast; being able to name things in the game makes it feel personalized to that play-through and creates really funny inside joke moments.”
  • replayability

    41 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
32% positive mentions, 61% neutral mentions, 7% negative mentions

The game offers solid replayability through diverse characters, party setups, and mission choices, encouraging multiple playthroughs to experience different tactics and story elements. While the campaign length is relatively short and lacks branching narratives, cooperative multiplayer and varying difficulty levels enhance its replay value. Some players desire additional campaigns or procedural content to further extend replayability.

    • “Great replay value because you want to play all characters and try all the nut combos you can imagine.”
    • “The various characters add a lot of replayability and the difficulty settings make it accessible to casual and somewhat more hardcore players.”
    • “This game has excellent local co-op and you can even stream one copy over Discord; it has a ton of replayability with new characters and new missions.”
    • “However, I think the 50 euro price tag is a bit steep since you complete the campaign in a little over 20 hours and it doesn't have much replay value aside from replaying the campaign on higher difficulty.”
    • “I'm worried about replayability, and hoping for additional campaigns or player-created storylines.”
    • “I’m partway through two campaigns and the one thing I hope comes in the future is additional campaigns and/or procedurally generated campaigns to increase the replayability.”
  • music

52% positive mentions, 35% neutral mentions, 13% negative mentions

The music in the game is generally praised for enhancing immersion, complementing the artwork, and dynamically adapting to gameplay, with standout voice acting adding charm and personality. Overall, the music contributes effectively to the game's atmosphere and storytelling.

    • “The soundtrack on this game is as beautiful as the artwork.”
    • “Truly composed so brilliantly, the music adds so much environment to the game.”
    • “The music sets the tone for exploration, and when the stakes rise, it shifts just enough to make you feel it without ever pushing too hard.”
    • “The music is lackluster and none of it actually catches your attention; it's just okay for the most part with some parts even a little annoying.”
    • “Soundtrack is not very interesting.”
    • “Steam had audio-streaming issues with music being choppy, and Discord has a default of 5fps streaming, which I had to learn to configure to 30fps.”
  • character development

    20 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
55% positive mentions, 30% neutral mentions, 15% negative mentions

The game features charming, quirky, and well-crafted character designs that effectively match their personalities and roles, enhancing player connection. • “I've enjoyed the character development and new things that are added as the game progresses.”
    • “The character design and diversity are fun and engaging for all sorts of play styles.”
    • “The character development lacks depth and feels superficial, making it hard to connect with the characters on an emotional level.”
    • “Character growth is minimal and uninspired, resulting in a stale and repetitive experience throughout the game.”
    • “Despite the game’s charm, the development of characters feels rushed and inconsistent, which detracts from the overall narrative impact.”
  • optimization

    16 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
44% positive mentions, 37% neutral mentions, 19% negative mentions

Optimization varies across titles: some games run smoothly with well-optimized mechanics and stable performance even on lower-end devices like the Steam Deck, while others suffer from frame rate issues and occasional disconnects despite high-end hardware. Cooperative games tend to emphasize streamlined, accessible optimization for teamwork, though certain scenarios or item balances can affect synergy. Overall, stable performance and user-friendly optimization are appreciated, but some titles still have room for improvement.

    • “We've done research, planned our lines, optimized our loadouts, and learned what the HP thresholds are to trigger the next phase.”
    • “Much more approachable, streamlined/optimized mechanics, easier to pick up for new players.”
    • “Accessibility 8/10 (most games don't have more than a 5 though), mobile support (relatively), low PC requirements for host, very well optimized. I can't remember the last time I found a game that was actually finished on launch.”
    • “I mean you buy 1 copy and have 4 friends playing with you and the game performance is not like some $70 game that keeps crashing every few minutes or is so unstable that you couldn't even play.”
    • “Didn't run super smooth on my Steam Deck, but could probably be optimized for that.”
    • “There are a few items that trivialize certain scenarios and greatly impact how synergy between characters can be optimized.”

8% positive mentions, 0% neutral mentions, 92% negative mentions

The game minimizes traditional grinding by simplifying progression and leveling, avoiding tedious repetitive tasks. While some story sections and conversations can feel tedious, gameplay and missions remain engaging without requiring excessive retries. It effectively streamlines usual board game setup and maintenance, offering a smooth, enjoyable experience without the grind.

    • “This can get a bit tedious (especially the conversations), but shouldn't be a reason not to play this game.”
    • “It gets very tedious and I prefer it the times they use discrete waves.”
    • “Story sections feel tedious.”
  • atmosphere

The blend of aesthetics, worldbuilding, and fluid cooperative play creates an inviting and enjoyable experience that appeals to many players.

    • “The art, the characters, the narration, and the general atmosphere all make it feel cozy without being boring.”
    • “Toss in a charming, tabletop atmosphere—where every character is voiced by the narrator—and you have a splendid D&D adjacent that truly shines bright!”
    • “The art and style is fantastic; the atmosphere and central hub is beautiful, the characters are fun and full of… well, character.”
    • “The writing, world, and atmosphere are not my first pick when it comes to a game.”
  • stability

    6 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
33% positive mentions, 0% neutral mentions, 67% negative mentions

The game generally offers a polished and smooth experience with no significant bugs or glitches on most platforms. However, some users report occasional lags, freezes, and low framerates, particularly on the Steam Deck, though recent updates have improved stability on that device.

    • “Imagine Gloomhaven, streamlined enough to actually teach your friends, with a great couch co-op vibe thanks to the 'everyone gets their own screen' jackbox-style phone play, a killer art and animation style, and a really heartfelt 'GM telling you an RPG story' narrative style.”
    • “Sunderfolk is a heartfelt digital tabletop-like experience that masterfully balances strategy, story, and social gameplay.”
    • “A heartwarming cross between Gloomhaven and Humblewood, Sunderfolk is billed as a great couch co-op, but it also works great over Discord streaming and (presumably) Steam sharing as well.”
  • monetization

    3 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
33% positive mentions, 0% neutral mentions, 67% negative mentions

The monetization of the game is seen by some as consumer-friendly and well-exposed through niche communities, but others criticize it as a cash grab tied to uninspired gameplay. Overall, opinions are mixed between appreciation for fair practices and skepticism about the game's value.

    • “This shouldn't be a hidden gem; this game deserves more exposure for having such a consumer-friendly game and monetization model!”
    • “I think my answer below is why, because the game is more of a simple chore than a game, it was a cash grab for almost everyone involved.”
