  • gameplay
    286 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay of Blightbound is characterized by its cooperative mechanics and strategic team dynamics, requiring players to form well-balanced parties to tackle challenging dungeons. While the core gameplay loop is engaging and offers a dark, atmospheric experience, many players find it repetitive and lacking in content, with issues such as poor AI and limited character customization detracting from the overall enjoyment. Despite its potential, the game suffers from balance problems and a grindy progression system, making it more enjoyable in short bursts rather than extended play sessions.

    • “With its dark and atmospheric setting, challenging gameplay, and strategic teamwork mechanics, Blightbound sets itself apart from other games in the genre.”
    • “The strategic aspect of forming a well-balanced team is crucial, as each class brings unique strengths and weaknesses to the table, encouraging cooperative gameplay and thoughtful decision-making.”
    • “Blightbound offers a captivating co-op dungeon crawling experience with its dark fantasy setting, strategic gameplay, and engaging cooperative mechanics.”
    • “I bought this game day 1 and was horrified how bad the gameplay was.”
    • “The story is threadbare, the gameplay loop is far too slow, the random missions make it so only a few missions are viable each loop, progression is wonky.”
    • “Really disappointed in the amount of content, replayability, gameplay, progression and how badly programmed this game is as this game looks like a 2012 flash game and costs 20€.”
  • story
    245 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's story is largely considered minimal and underwhelming, with character arcs feeling like filler rather than engaging narratives. Players unlock personal quests for each character, but the grinding required to complete them often leads to disappointment, as the rewards are limited to voice-acted scripts without significant payoff. Overall, while there are fragments of lore and character backstories, the repetitive missions and lack of substantial story progression detract from the overall experience.

    • “You unlock many different characters over the campaign, each with their own personal story and unique abilities.”
    • “At the same time, completing those personal quests opens up the lore which keeps me interested in what's happening next.”
    • “The story itself is told through personal quests of each of the heroes you acquire.”
    • “The story is threadbare, the gameplay loop is far too slow, the random missions make it so only a few missions are viable each loop, progression is wonky.”
    • “Completing the full story of a character just rewards you with all 6 dialog scripts which are voice acted... but very very underwhelming.”
    • “They tried to put some story in but it's basically non-existent.”
  • graphics
    149 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The graphics of the game are widely praised for their stunning art style, which features beautifully crafted dark fantasy environments and detailed character designs reminiscent of titles like "Darkest Dungeon." Players appreciate the atmospheric visuals and unique aesthetic, although some note minor glitches and a need for further polish. Overall, the graphics contribute significantly to the game's immersive experience, enhancing both the gameplay and the overall mood.

    • “Blightbound takes place in a beautifully crafted dark fantasy world, brimming with atmospheric visuals and hauntingly detailed environments.”
    • “The art style and attention to detail in the world design contribute to the game's immersive experience, drawing players into its rich lore.”
    • “The art style is dark, gritty, and whimsical; the combat is fun and engaging; the loot system feels rewarding; and the game has a level of polish that many AAA full release titles don't have.”
    • “The art style is too bland.”
    • “Unclear visuals.”
    • “Art style and environment is solid, but the level layouts can be sluggish at times.”
  • stability
    67 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's stability is a significant concern, with numerous players reporting severe bugs, glitches, and crashes, particularly during the tutorial and in various missions. While some users have experienced smoother gameplay after initial issues, many still encounter game-breaking problems that hinder progress and enjoyment. Overall, the game is deemed very buggy, especially in its early access state, leading to frustration among players despite its potential for fun.

    • “Once we got started, this game was a completely bug-free experience.”
    • “The tutorial is a bit buggy at the start; all 3 of us had at least 1 crash to desktop during the tutorial sequence.”
    • “Sadly, many missions still end in fatal glitches, invulnerable bosses, or just impassable areas due to poor companion AI.”
    • “The bad: the game is extremely glitchy and some of the worst glitches I have ever encountered in a video game.”
  • grinding
    61 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The grinding aspect of the game has received mixed reviews, with many players finding the progression excessively slow and repetitive due to a limited number of levels and low enemy variety. While some enjoy the grind for gear and character story completion, others feel it becomes tedious and unfulfilling, especially with low drop rates and a lack of engaging content. Overall, the grinding experience can be enjoyable for those who appreciate the genre, but it risks becoming a chore for players seeking more dynamic gameplay.

    • “You'll need a second life for grinding.”
    • “Really grindy progression and nothing new in terms of world, gameplay, or anything.”
    • “With only just 9 levels and no variation coming along with increasing difficulty, Blightbound becomes grindy, repetitive, and boring very fast.”
    • “Grinding for the sake of grinding will kill this game.”
  • optimization
    24 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's optimization has received mixed reviews, with many players experiencing significant performance issues, including low frame rates, crashes, and glitches, even on high-end hardware. While some users report satisfactory performance at lower settings, the overall consensus is that the game is currently poorly optimized and may not be worth purchasing until further updates address these issues. Despite these challenges, players appreciate the game's graphics and ongoing content updates, indicating potential for improvement in the future.

    • “My review is based on the latest patch. You can basically play the game single player right now and be fine, just go at your own pace, discover things. Graphics are very good, performance isn't an issue, in-depth crafting system is there, new dungeons/heroes added like every 2 weeks so far. The game is early access, obviously, so lots of good stuff to come.”
    • “Currently, I don't think you'd want to purchase this game in its current state; however, if they update and fix any of the bugs or glitches the game might have, possible performance issues and things like that, it might end up being worth it later down the road.”
    • “Some performance issues, some minor glitches.”
    • “Optimization is non-existent; boss fights sometimes don't progress to the next phase, causing you to lose your progress of that run. Crashes and desyncs are happening more often than they should.”
    • “The game can feel sluggish as the performance crawls to 30 fps often in combat (I'm running the game on: CPU: i7 7700k, GPU: GTX 1080 Ti).”
    • “Currently, I don't think you'd want to purchase this game in its current state. However, if they update and fix any of the bugs or glitches the game might have, possible performance issues and things like that, it might end up being worth it later down the road.”
  • music
    20 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music in the game is widely praised for its quality and ability to enhance the overall experience, with many reviewers noting that the soundtrack and sound design are immaculate and well-integrated into the gameplay. Players appreciate the art direction and the unique musical choices that contribute to the game's atmosphere, despite some technical issues that detract from the overall enjoyment. Overall, the music stands out as a strong aspect of the game, complementing its aesthetic appeal and engaging gameplay.

    • “Gameplay is tight and twitchy, graphics are gorgeous, sound design and music are immaculate.”
    • “Aesthetics and graphics are nice, music is good, and kudos to the devs for having the courage to do something different in the rogue-like genre.”
    • “Glitches such as not being able to progress through the story because the game either doesn't register you have picked something up or you are doing something too quickly, such as picking up a skull in one of the most glitchy missions in the game called 'To Whom the Bell Tolls.' Unlike the Metallica song, the bell in this mission never tolls, I guess because it won't allow you to progress through it. It got so bad that my friend left, and might I add the game punishes you in two ways if your friend leaves by taking away your notoriety (a system that rewards you for winning) and by taking away your blight (a system that will not allow you to play a character you want to play if they become blight-struck). You are not even allowed to pick your character until you are level 9, which is kind of frustrating. So make sure you have a party because if you ever dare to queue with randoms, you will feel the wrath of blight in this case, and the lack of items will drive you mad without notoriety.”
    • “Overall: I recommend this game if you are not easily annoyed because the glitches are super annoying. I look past them as all my characters die from blight from people disconnecting as they chant Spanish hymns or French musicals while unplugging their PCs, and I lose out on all the hard work I did. I ask myself, why am I so addicted to this game? Please help, I'm being cursed in another language.”
    • “The music and sound effects are well done and help you enjoy your journey through the dungeons more.”
  • replayability
    18 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game offers a mix of replayability through its variety of monsters, characters, and missions, particularly for players who enjoy farming for loot and completing side quests. However, some users express disappointment in the limited content and feel that the game lacks the depth needed for long-term replayability, suggesting it still feels like an early access title. Overall, while there is potential for enjoyable gameplay, concerns about content and programming may hinder its lasting appeal.

    • “However, there's a lot of replay value in doing the camp side quests as well as figuring out what to do next in each hero's personal quests.”
    • “Good game, addictive gameplay, a lot of replayability.”
    • “Tldr; this game shows promise, and will entertain you and 2 friends for several hours before some replayability issues arise.”
    • “Really disappointed in the amount of content, replayability, gameplay, progression, and how badly programmed this game is as this game looks like a 2012 flash game and costs 20€.”
    • “There are a good amount, albeit still limited, of replayable missions that drop random loot, so if you like farming missions to get progressively better loot, then this is the game for you.”
  • humor
    14 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The humor in the game is polarizing; while some players find it lacking, others highlight the fun that comes from playing with friends and the absurdity of certain abilities. Many reviews suggest that the game shines in a multiplayer setting, leading to hilarious moments and enjoyable experiences, especially when tackling missions together. Overall, the humor can be hit or miss, but it often leads to memorable and entertaining gameplay when shared with others.

    • “You have to try it, get some friends and have a lot of funny nights together; you can play on the same console or PC.”
    • “This means you can just run pretty easy missions with a decent team and get some hilariously overpowered gear.”
    • “Edit: The developer humorously asked me to give the game another shot, despite me saying I refunded the game.”
    • “Not funny”
    • “Not funny”
  • atmosphere
    12 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Blightbound is praised for its immersive dark fantasy atmosphere, featuring beautifully crafted visuals and haunting environments that evoke a sense of nostalgia reminiscent of old-school RPGs. The game's combination of challenging gameplay, strategic teamwork, and atmospheric sound effects enhances the overall experience, making it stand out in its genre. Players appreciate the game's ability to create a dreary yet engaging ambiance that complements its combat and gameplay mechanics.

    • “Blightbound takes place in a beautifully crafted dark fantasy world, brimming with atmospheric visuals and hauntingly detailed environments.”
    • “Great atmosphere and really reminds you of an old-school RPG.”
    • “Art, game flow, sound effects, and dungeons are very atmospheric.”
    • “As mentioned elsewhere, what caught me was the Castle Crashers feel and Diablo atmosphere.”
  • monetization
    8 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The monetization aspect of the game currently features no microtransactions, which some players view as a positive, but many express concerns that the game feels like a cash grab due to its lack of content and persistent bugs. Players are frustrated with the repetitive dungeon design and limited item choices, leading to skepticism about the game's long-term viability and potential for future updates. Overall, the sentiment suggests that while there are no immediate monetization issues, the game's quality and content raise doubts about its value.

    • “As of writing, there are no microtransactions.”
    • “This feels like a cheap cash grab from the devs. Not recommended, even if it was free.”
    • “Very buggy game, desync... I know it's still an early access game (that might stay like that, like most of those kinds of games, because most of the time, they're cash grabs) but if this game goes on, they need to add mechanisms like a reset for stats, more leveling experience, new skills, new classes (other than the 3 main classes that change skills), randomly generated stages, more items (yeah, seriously, right now, item choices are garbage), perks maybe, I don't know, something. Add something to this game... and fix all the bugs because playing a co-op game with all those bugs is hell!”
  • emotional
    2 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Players find the emotional aspect of the game to be impactful, though some note that it feels somewhat unrefined and may require further development to enhance its depth and resonance.
