  • story954 mentions

The story of "Spacelords" is generally regarded as engaging and humorous, featuring diverse characters with unique backstories and abilities. However, many players express frustration over the limited number of missions (only 17) and the repetitive nature of gameplay, as well as the lack of new content updates. While the antagonist system adds an interesting twist to missions, it can also lead to unbalanced gameplay, detracting from the overall narrative experience.

    • “The story is interesting; the playable characters each have their own unique personalities, weapons, and abilities; and even the enemy factions you face are unique.”
    • “The story is funny and engaging.”
    • “The story and lore of this game is one of the best parts about it!”
    • “The story is nonsensical and happens way too fast (who am I freeing and why? what on earth is aleph?), characters are incredibly derivative or a mish mash of shapes, and the cinematography is aping Metal Gear Solid way too hard.”
    • “The missions are short and shaped as arenas, having you repeat various actions several times (example: kill some bad guys, fill a container, kill some more bad guys, fill another container, and so on).”
    • “The antagonist system is so unbalanced... example the player who played any mission a lot it will be so ez for them, so it will become 1 vs 4 like even the antagonist, don't have any advantages and when u be good and kill all their lives the 16 life mean they will come back so fast .... even in the 4 vs 1 games they make the 1 strong as 4 so that's why no one plays antagonist anymore.”

The gameplay of "Spacelords" is characterized by a unique blend of mechanics, including a rock-paper-scissors melee system and cooperative play, which many players find engaging and fun. However, the game suffers from clunky controls, unbalanced mechanics, and a lack of clear tutorials, leading to frustration, especially for new players. While the character diversity and mission variety are praised, the overall experience is marred by issues such as slow matchmaking and repetitive gameplay, making it a mixed bag for players.

    • “The gameplay is fun, the character ideas are truly unique and aren't copies of each other, they each have unique dialogue and play styles, the cutscenes are hilarious, and I would highly recommend watching the entire story once through on your favorite character at least once.”
    • “The gameplay is fast-paced and crazy fun.”
    • “The gameplay is varied, and takes time to totally master, which in my opinion is a plus.”
    • “Gameplay is clunky and weak as all hell, and I do understand, you are supposed to play this as a multiplayer, which I have, when there were people still playing it.”
    • “The mechanics of the individual characters are bad and lack flair.”
    • “The gameplay is broken and janky, the matchmaking is slow and requires 4 human players, which is monumental considering the microscopic player base.”
  • graphics237 mentions

The graphics of the game have received widespread praise for their quality and unique art style, often compared to high-profile titles like Borderlands and Overwatch. Many players appreciate the vibrant visuals, fluid animations, and overall aesthetic appeal, noting that the graphics stand out even in a free-to-play context. However, some critiques mention limitations in graphical settings and a disconnect between the impressive visuals and gameplay mechanics, suggesting that while the graphics are a highlight, they may not fully compensate for other gameplay shortcomings.

    • “The graphics are stunning, creating an immersive sci-fi environment that keeps you engaged.”
    • “The graphics are fantastic and it definitely could be super popular, if they could balance out some things.”
    • “Spacelords has beautiful art styles and concepts realized in its graphics.”
    • “Ladies and gentlemen, this is the best example of a game where the devs decided to invest all their money into the design and graphic team and not leave a single dime on marketing, combat, or literally anything else.”
    • “Garbage characters, garbage narrative, garbage graphics.”
    • “When this got onto Steam it was a buggy mess with awful graphics settings, ugly character models, a shaky camera during cutscenes, and being sold at full price without actually having any content.”
  • grinding98 mentions

The grinding aspect of the game is widely criticized for being excessively tedious and time-consuming, often requiring players to replay the same missions repeatedly to unlock characters and upgrades. While some players find enjoyment in the grind and appreciate the game's mechanics, many express frustration over the lack of meaningful rewards and the reliance on grinding to progress, especially in a game with a limited player base that complicates matchmaking. Overall, the grinding experience is seen as a significant drawback, detracting from the game's potential enjoyment.

    • “The game may have unique and gorgeous visual styles, but this game is totally ruined by ridiculous grinding, broken matchmaking, and an unfair antagonist system that can ruin your days.”
    • “Unlocking new raiders requires a ridiculous amount of grinding, which is made worse by the fairly small number of missions (even with all of the DLC campaigns).”
    • “A fantastic base game that has over time been ruined by extremely poor monetization, changes to its core to reward grinding, and extremely long grinds to get to those characters in the first place.”
  • humor54 mentions

The humor in the game is widely praised, with players highlighting the funny and unique characters, engaging cutscenes, and witty dialogue that contribute to an entertaining experience. Many reviews note the game's blend of slapstick and clever humor, reminiscent of titles like Borderlands, making it enjoyable for both solo and co-op play. Despite some criticisms regarding gameplay mechanics and monetization, the overall comedic tone and character interactions are seen as standout features that enhance the game's appeal.

    • “The gameplay is fun, the character ideas are truly unique and aren't copies of each other. They each have unique dialogue and play styles, the cutscenes are hilarious, and I would highly recommend watching the entire story once through on your favorite character at least once.”
    • “This game nails so much; even the menus and patch notes have funny contemporary humor.”
    • “The game has a great lore including a lot of humor because of the characters who are crazy peeps saving the broken planet.”
    • “The unnecessary cursing is supposed to be funny, but it just makes my brain bleed out of my ears.”
    • “The jokes fall flat and feel forced, lacking any real wit or charm.”
    • “I expected humor, but instead, I was met with cringeworthy attempts at comedy that missed the mark.”
  • character development47 mentions

Character development in the game is primarily highlighted through its unique and visually appealing character designs, which many players find to be the standout feature. While some reviews note that the character designs can be polarizing or overly stylized, the overall consensus is that they contribute significantly to the game's atmosphere and enjoyment. Additionally, the combination of character design with engaging gameplay and humor enhances the overall experience, although some players express a desire for deeper character development and storytelling.

    • “The character design is outstanding: every character is a unique experience and worth it. If you give time and practice, all characters have the potential to be overpowered.”
    • “Great graphics, superb character design, and an interesting lore setup. The art style doesn’t pull any punches and just does its own thing without coddling its audience, which is becoming rarer in the gaming industry.”
    • “I have to say this is my favorite part: the character designs and personalities are really strong and fun.”
    • “The grind for character development is frustrating and feels unnecessary.”
    • “Characters: the character designs in this game are so off-putting.”
    • “One of the shittiest character designs ever made and cringey personalities; may I add the basic infantry of the enemy has way better designs than the actual characters.”
  • monetization33 mentions

The monetization model of the game has received mixed reviews, with many players criticizing it as overly aggressive and exploitative, particularly regarding the high prices of microtransactions for cosmetic items and essential gameplay features. While some appreciate that the game is free-to-play and allows for earning items through gameplay, others feel that the monetization practices detract from the overall experience, labeling it a cash grab. Overall, there is a consensus that the game could benefit from a more balanced approach to monetization to enhance player retention and enjoyment.

    • “Especially since out of most of the free games I have played in a long while, the monetization is actually fairly reasonable and encourages me to support the developers rather than scoff at attempts to swindle consumers.”
    • “Non-predatory microtransactions: everything in this game can (and most have to) be earned by playing the game.”
    • “Since this is a free-to-play game, I'm fine with monetizations as long as it's not pay-to-win.”
    • “The shops cost too much money and it's obviously a cash grab game.”
    • “Furthermore, the microtransactions are heavily overpriced (2.50 for a second loadout slot, for example, over 20 for certain skins).”
    • “The microtransactions are laughably overpriced ('but it's just cosmetic!' I hear the white knights screaming at nobody in particular).”
  • optimization26 mentions

Overall, the game's optimization is generally praised, with smooth movement and well-optimized graphics that run effectively even on lower-end hardware. However, some users report issues such as desktop interference when alt-tabbing and occasional performance hiccups, particularly in single-player mode. While many find the engine to be well-optimized, there are mixed feelings about the need for further improvements, especially regarding server stability and character progression.

    • “A lot of fun, constant updates, and great well optimized graphics all for free.”
    • “Graphics are very good, animations are fluid, and very well optimized allowing me to run even on a GTX 550 Ti GPU.”
    • “It is optimized decently, has an automatic cover system that doesn't feel weird, the animations and shooting are great, and the gameplay is fast-paced mixed with special abilities, flanking maneuvers, and tons of objectives.”
    • “The graphics are state of the art and the performance of the game is at an acceptable level; however, when I try to alt-tab out of the game to turn off the music or something, I get my desktop messed up in the sense that I cannot click on anything because the game somehow affects it. I do not like when something is messing up my computer in any way, so this reason alone is enough for not recommending the game; however, there are plenty more reasons as to why I would not recommend it.”
    • “The only major downsides are how much you need to grind to unlock character perks and weapons, how the server connection isn't so stable, and how the optimization for PC could be way better than it is.”
    • “Yes, the game is not perfect due to some connection and optimization issues.”
  • music20 mentions

The music in the game receives mixed reviews, with some players praising its catchy themes and integration into gameplay, while others find it forgettable and too quiet. Many appreciate the overall quality of the soundtrack and its contribution to the game's atmosphere, but there are criticisms regarding its repetitiveness and lack of variety. Overall, the music is seen as a highlight for some, enhancing the game's appeal, while others feel it falls short of expectations.

    • “I really like the music, graphics, models, the general direction of the game, the personality of the characters and how vivid everything feels.”
    • “The theme music is catchy and perfect for the game.”
    • “The characters, the colors, and the music (albeit few) bring a AAA quality to the table that really does put the quality of the game high up.”
    • “The soundtrack is mixed way too quietly, and overall it's just uninspired.”
    • “Unfortunately, this game's soundtrack is forgettable, and again way too quiet, much like the gunfire.”
    • “The graphics are state of the art and the performance of the game is at an acceptable level; however, when I try to alt-tab out of the game to turn off the music, it messes up my desktop, making it unclickable. This issue alone is enough for me not to recommend the game.”
  • stability14 mentions

The stability of the game has received largely negative feedback, with users reporting numerous bugs, glitches, and performance issues, particularly on consoles like the PS4. While some players noted that the game runs smoothly on decent PCs, many expressed frustration over unbalanced gameplay, sluggish controls, and matchmaking problems. Overall, the game appears to be in need of significant updates and improvements to address these stability concerns.

    • “The game runs smoothly without any crashes, making for a seamless experience.”
    • “I haven't encountered any bugs or glitches, which really enhances the overall enjoyment.”
    • “With a decent PC, the performance is fantastic and stability is top-notch.”
    • “Can tell it's not updated and very buggy even on PS4. Too many issues and hardly any new content. It's clear that the developers don't care about this game. It's a good game, but come on, do better.”
    • “The glitches are vast.”
    • “The matchmaking did not work at first, which means if someone leaves the group, you'll be on your own until the end of the round. This happens all day long; the game runs unstable or freezes a lot.”
  • replayability9 mentions

The game's replayability is mixed; while it offers a unique experience with varied missions and character selection that can enhance replay value, many players feel that the limited content and reliance on loot grinding detract from long-term engagement. The strategic element of character choice in multiplayer adds some depth, but overall, the lack of variety and progression issues leave players wanting more, especially given the game's price point.

    • “A very unique and fun game with a lot of potential; each time you play a mission feels different, and that only helps the replayability.”
    • “Even when you play with friends or other people online, you have that strategic component of having to choose the character you're going to play depending on the team, which I think gives you variety and replayability.”
    • “The current content is rather small compared to a €20 or €30 game, but the €10 price tag fits correctly with the content offered, which even has plenty of possibilities for replayability, from gathering more of the 3 currencies available to customize your raider the way you want to play it, to playing the antagonist mode, a mode where you must stop the normal 4 team of players from finishing the mission, making it 4 v 1, with the 1 having the backing of all the enemies on the map.”
    • “Sadly, there's not much content there as missions don't offer too much variety in replayability, only relying on loot grind to draw you in.”
    • “Great core idea but the lack of replayability and horrible progression/variety have ruined the game for me.”
    • “One player pressing a button makes it unskippable for other players, which is not good for replayability.”
  • atmosphere6 mentions

The game's atmosphere is described as fun and casual, enhanced by quirky character designs and unique cutscenes that contribute to its humor. While the visual style and world-building are praised as top-notch, some players feel that the atmosphere is less impactful during gameplay compared to the cutscenes and menus. Overall, it creates an engaging and enjoyable environment, though concerns about multiplayer dynamics persist.

    • “The game is a fun, grindy shooter with interesting character designs, and actually rather quirky and unique cutscenes which really help establish the atmosphere and make the game humorous to play.”
    • “Ok, let me first say that Raiders of a Broken Planet's visual style, world, atmosphere, and weapon/character design are top notch!”
    • “Also quite atmospheric, yet mostly in the cutscenes and menus.”
    • “That being said, I do not have high hopes for the game's multiplayer overall because of the current atmosphere when it comes to shooters.”
  • emotional3 mentions

Players find the game to have a wholesome and enjoyable emotional tone, particularly when played with friends, enhancing the overall experience. However, some users express a lack of desire to revisit the game after their initial playthrough.

    • “For something free, it's pretty cool how wholesome it feels.”
    • “This is a fun game, but I'd highly recommend playing with friends to have a more wholesome and fun experience.”
