Soft Body Game Cover
While Soft Body initially strikes a nice balance of difficulty, the later levels become far too complex, which is a serious problem as being able to solve these puzzles comes down to your physical attributes. Without the necessary reflexes or hand-eye co-ordination, there's no possible way for you to progress through these levels, even if you understand what you're doing wrong and what you need to do to solve it. Fortunately, we found the game's first set of levels to be a very enjoyable challenge and a unique spin on the puzzle genre.

"Soft Body" is a psychedelic action game where players control two interconnected entities to paint the world and battle enemies. Guide your soft bodies through unique levels, solve puzzles, and defeat bosses to unlock new abilities and colors. The game features a soothing synth soundtrack and a unique art style for a surreal and immersive experience.

The gameplay is noted for its unique and polished mechanics, blending puzzle elements with bullet hell, resulting in well-designed levels that offer a fresh experience. However, some users feel that the game can be shallow and underdeveloped in certain areas, and while the gameplay is enjoyable, the price may be considered steep for the duration of play. Overall, it provides a mix of vibrant visuals and engaging mechanics, though opinions on depth and value vary.

    • “A nice little game with really good mechanics and sound design.”
    • “While the asking price seems steep, there is a ton of top-quality gameplay and fun to be had here.”
    • “Used improperly, you get something like soft body, which combines the simple look with colorful, vibrant visuals that look like an acid trip; one whose luminous stretches of pigment serve only to distract from how shallow and underdeveloped the game’s mechanics are.”
    • “Too expensive for short gameplay.”
  • music5 mentions

The music aspect of the game has received mixed reviews; while some players appreciate the cool ambient music and atmospheric elements, others criticize the complete absence of music, noting that only lackluster sound effects are present, which contradicts the game's promotional claims. Overall, the experience seems to vary significantly depending on individual expectations regarding musical content.

    • “However, if we both know there's a pot of gold waiting for you somewhere below, if we play nice music and maybe have a deeply personal conversation along the way, then this hole-digging business suddenly won't seem so off-putting anymore.”
    • “+music and atmosphere are really cool”
    • “A great game for anybody who likes any of the following: ambient music, bullet hells, a sense of whimsy and something different, cool shaders, and neat games.”

The graphics in the game are criticized for lacking meaningful visuals, with no screenshots or artwork available in the community hub. While the trend of simple visuals is prevalent in the indie market, the execution here is deemed poor, as the vibrant and distracting colors detract from the gameplay experience and highlight the game's shallow mechanics.

    • “Amongst the many trends that have arisen alongside the massive proliferation of the indie market, simple visuals stand out as one of the most popular.”
    • “There are neither screenshots nor any artwork in the community hub, as you won't find anything even a tiny bit meaningful or interesting to look at while playing.”
    • “Used improperly, you get something like soft body, which combines the simple look with colorful, vibrant visuals that look like an acid trip; one whose luminous stretches of pigment serve only to distract from how shallow and underdeveloped the game’s mechanics are.”
    • “The visuals impede all of these tasks.”
  • grinding2 mentions

Players find the grinding aspect of the game to be both challenging and tedious, with a sense of satisfaction that comes from mastering later-game levels and easily dominating earlier ones.

    • “This is the most challenging, but also the most tedious game I have ever laid my hands on.”
    • “Grinding out later-game levels and then returning to earlier ones just to find that you've become a literal god all of a sudden is a unique experience, but it can feel repetitive.”
    • “The grinding mechanics make progress feel slow and often frustrating, leading to a sense of burnout.”
  • story2 mentions

The story is criticized for lacking substance and engagement, leading players to lose interest quickly. While the concept shows promise, it ultimately feels underdeveloped and fails to deliver a compelling narrative, relying instead on difficulty that doesn't fully materialize.

    • “The narrative unfolds beautifully, keeping me engaged from start to finish with its well-crafted plot and emotional depth.”
    • “Each character's journey is compelling, making the overall story feel personal and impactful.”
    • “Seeing that there is virtually no substance, nothing to keep them engaged, nothing to motivate them to press forward, they quickly give up – and that's the end of the story.”
    • “It’s a promising idea that ultimately feels like another indie story of 'I have a concept, now what?', with the 'what' here being marketed as unrelenting difficulty that doesn’t actually have the courage to be that hard.”
  • emotional2 mentions

The emotional aspect of the game is tied to the player's interaction with the environment, as each snake's ability to color uncoloured areas evokes a sense of creativity and accomplishment.
