Shiness: The Lightning Kingdom

Shiness gets a 6.5 / 10. I REALLY want to give this title a 7 / 10, but for the reasons above, I feel like it needs a little more work to achieve this vision.

  • Beautiful, colorful art style and vibrant, expressive world design that enhances atmosphere and exploration.
  • Unique, fast-paced action RPG combat combining fighting game mechanics with party swapping and elemental magic, offering depth and challenge when mastered.
  • Engaging soundtrack and well-produced manga-style cutscenes that add to the overall experience and world-building.
  • Combat system is often clunky, inconsistent, and frustrating with issues like stun locks, lack of clear enemy telegraphs, and camera problems that hinder gameplay.
  • Numerous bugs including game-breaking ones, poor controller and keyboard support, and technical issues due to unfinished development and developer bankruptcy.
  • Story and characters are uneven with an incomplete narrative, cringey dialogue, and poor exposition that fail to fully engage, compounded by long unskippable cutscenes and awkward pacing.
  • story

    204 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The story features compelling ideas and emotional moments enhanced by cel-shaded visuals and manga-style cutscenes, but its delivery is uneven with underdeveloped characters, unresolved plot threads, and awkward exposition. While some players find it engaging and immersive, others criticize it as incomplete, convoluted, or lacking closure—partly due to a rushed or cut development—and marred by bugs and inconsistent pacing. Overall, the narrative offers interesting lore and potential but suffers from poor execution and an abrupt, unsatisfying ending.

    • “The cel-shaded visuals pair well with animated cutscenes that feel reminiscent of manga storytelling, helping important narrative moments stand out.”
    • “The quest to redeem Adorya is greatly narrated, and the characters have got amazing voice acting for such a low-budget project.”
    • “The storytelling puts you in the shoes of characters you can relate to, characters you want to see grow and develop.”
    • “The story is sadly unfinished and the game is generally a bit buggy/sloppy in some feedback during combat.”
    • “Take note if you're thinking of grabbing this for the story - there is no proper ending.”
    • “The rest of the game isn't so bad outside the couple of undying bugs you can get in combat where you need to restart the game, the shi affinity system that makes almost no sense, and the story that seems to bounce between new and old plot points to the point where you just have an abrupt ending that also makes no sense.”
  • gameplay

    104 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay combines real-time action RPG and fighting game elements, offering satisfying depth and smooth mechanics once mastered, though initial complexity and some clunky controls may overwhelm new players. Combat is fast-paced with diverse character abilities and puzzle-solving elements, but issues like repetitive encounters, unbalanced difficulty scaling, and some frustrating mechanics (e.g., dodge-roll, input lag) detract from the experience. Overall, it appeals mainly to fans of experimental, skill-based JRPGs seeking a unique, if somewhat flawed, combat and adventure blend.

    • “Battles are real-time and structured more like duels, combining traditional action RPG mechanics with elements inspired by fighting games.”
    • “Players willing to invest time in understanding the mechanics will find satisfying depth, but those expecting immediate clarity may feel overwhelmed.”
    • “The controls are tight and responsive, and there are a ton of game mechanics here.”
    • “Pretty garbage game, terrible mechanics, doesn't work on controller or mouse and keyboard, story is disjointed and nonsensical, combat and characters are clunky and unrefined.”
    • “The enemies' moves are fast and twitchy so you can never properly foresee their attacks, which renders the standby blocking mechanic unusable.”
    • “The platforming mechanics are somewhat janky resulting in many failed jumps.”
  • graphics

    75 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game features vibrant, colorful, and anime-inspired cel-shaded graphics that evoke a charming, manga-like aesthetic reminiscent of titles like Ni no Kuni and Zelda: Breath of the Wild. While many praise the appealing world design and animated cutscenes, some critics note the visuals feel somewhat dated, akin to PS2-era quality, with occasional inconsistencies and glitches. Overall, the graphics are generally well-received for their style and atmosphere, though not groundbreaking technically.

    • “The game features a vibrant, anime-inspired art style that gives Mahera a colorful and expressive personality, from bustling towns to serene natural landscapes and ominous ruins.”
    • “The artstyle is really impressive and reminds me of Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild; I think the cel shading style was very nice and the color palette is nice and easy on the eyes.”
    • “Shiness: the Lightning Kingdom's anime styled graphics are honestly very good looking.”
    • “It's a modern game with PS2 style graphics.”
    • “The graphics themselves look about right for a PS2 game, which I guess can be said for what it was going for, but it doesn't seem to be the base when you factor in how many particles this game wants to render.”
    • “Controls are bad, character design is just horrible, graphics are so-so and the gameplay is not interesting.”
  • music

    54 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's music is widely praised for its beautiful, well-composed soundtrack that richly enhances the atmosphere and fits perfectly with the world and combat, often evoking nostalgia for classic RPGs. However, some players find the music repetitive, especially in early areas, and occasionally unmemorable or generic. Overall, the soundtrack is considered one of the game's strongest and most immersive features.

    • “Music further enhances this atmosphere, offering energetic tracks during battles and softer melodies during exploration that reinforce the sense of a grand journey across a living, breathing world.”
    • “As a keen listener and observer of soundtracks in general, I can say for sure that each track finds its rightful place in the game, lifting the atmosphere and bringing life into the world.”
    • “What Shiness excels at best is probably the soundtrack which may remind you of the 90's era of gaming's best like the Chrono series and Final Fantasy games.”
    • “Music gets repetitive real fast, especially in the first forest area.”
    • “Far too few music tracks; despite complicated and poorly explained abilities, the combat sequences are repetitive, and the music fails to stand out.”
    • “The music is also well composed, although the starting area music started to get on my nerves before I was through (it was just a touch too repetitive, and I spent way more time there exploring than I probably should have).”
  • grinding

    11 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Grinding is a significant part of the game, with early combat feeling tedious and controls becoming frustrating over time. While grinding spell and combo masteries is manageable and even enjoyable for some, late-game grinding becomes more annoying due to limited enemies and diminishing returns from leveling. Overall, grinding is necessary but can be a mixed experience depending on the player's patience and engagement with the gameplay.

    • “The only combat for this game is grinding, which isn't necessarily easy since you begin to get diminishing returns the moment you're one level above an enemy.”
    • “Late game grinding is annoying as there are few enemies to fight leading up to the final boss.”
    • “The world is bland and doesn't have much going on, the magic learning system at the start seems like a great idea but becomes tedious as the game progresses.”
  • stability

    10 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game suffers from numerous bugs and glitches, including game-freezing issues during combat and in specific areas like the train, which can severely impact progression. Despite these stability problems, players find the story and characters engaging enough to overlook flaws, though a patch is recommended for a smoother experience.

    • “The train area was super buggy and full of glitches.”
    • “As much as there are a lot of bugs, I have encountered one game-breaking bug that freezes input on the train with '3 arrows', preventing any further progress.”
    • “If an enemy tries to engage combat during a pan-out area view or cutscene, the game ends up in a deadlock and freezes, causing loss of over an hour of progress.”
  • humor

    10 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The humor in the game is generally praised as charming, quirky, and enjoyable, with funny dialogue and likable characters providing comedic moments. However, some tonal inconsistencies, such as mismatched character emotions, slightly detract from the overall experience. Overall, the humor adds to the game's appeal and storytelling.

    • “Charming, cute, funny and beautifully animated.”
    • “Don't want to give any spoilers :) game has quirky humor and easter eggs, highly enjoyable.”
    • “Good story so far, and humor all around.”
  • character development

    9 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Character development in the game is mixed, with some players appreciating natural pacing and visual appeal, while others feel it lacks depth and meaningful agency for the characters. Despite some strong character design and attractive presentation, the narrative and dialogue choices often feel inconsequential, leading to a somewhat flat character progression overall.

    • “Great game with some nice character development that adds quite the flair to the overall gameplay.”
    • “Character development proceeds at a natural pace that feels appropriate in most cases, with some early moments that make more sense as the game advances.”
    • “Good visual, great character design, beautiful cutscenes, interesting gameplay combining fighting game and RPG aspects.”
    • “This leads to a feeling of missing character development.”
    • “Some of the character designs and writing fell a little flat for me, but the puzzles and battle mechanics aren't terrible, and the environment is pretty and interesting.”
    • “The only thing I am unsure of is whether dialogue options actually change the outcome of events or not, but seeing how the rest of the game plays out I would guess that it doesn't matter which option you pick in most circumstances. Character development proceeds at a natural pace that feels appropriate in most cases, though there are a couple minor occasions early on where a character reacts in a surprising way.”
  • atmosphere

    7 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's atmosphere is richly enhanced by its vibrant visuals, dynamic music that shifts seamlessly between energetic battle tracks and soothing exploration melodies, and strong voice acting. This combination creates an immersive, colorful world reminiscent of anime classics, delivering a lively and engaging experience.

    • “The music, graphics, voice acting, and atmosphere of the game are all top notch, and the anime-esque nature of the game puts it up there next to Ni no Kuni.”
  • optimization

    7 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Optimization reviews are mixed: while some players experience smooth and stable performance with solid mechanics and well-designed menus, others report lag, audio issues in cutscenes, and initial frame drops even on powerful hardware. Overall, the game runs well after brief stabilization but could benefit from further optimization improvements.

    • “This game is a super smooth game, well optimized, just need a controller.”
    • “Performance is very stable although I did suffer some initial frame destabilization when running on NVIDIA GTX 1060, but only for a few minutes; after that, it becomes stable.”
    • “There’s neat voice acting and performance is decent.”
    • “- Poorly optimized - I run a pretty beastly computer playing this, and it lags. The audio quality is not all that great in the comic panel cutscenes, and overall it's a bit laggy.”
    • “Performance is very stable although I did suffer some initial frame destabilization when running on an Nvidia GTX 1060 for a few minutes, but after that, it becomes stable.”
  • emotional

    4 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's emotional impact is mixed, with some compelling and heartfelt moments offset by uneven dialogue that can lessen the story's resonance. However, it also provides a sense of competence and achievement, especially in its fighting mechanics, which some players find emotionally rewarding.

    • “While the story contains compelling ideas and moments of emotional resonance, its delivery is uneven.”
    • “Dialogue can vary in quality, ranging from engaging and heartfelt to overly long or repetitive, which can dilute the impact of key story beats.”
    • “I'm usually quite bad at fighting games, but this one made me feel really competent.”
  • replayability

    1 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game offers strong replayability, with players appreciating its ability to remain engaging over multiple sessions. Its design encourages repeated playthroughs by providing varied experiences and challenges.
