Lab Zero's latest release looks to cross traditional platforming with RPG mechanics. Our review.
"Indivisible is a fantasy action RPG platformer with stunning visuals, an outstanding soundtrack, and unique real-time combat. Play as Ajna, a rebellious girl who absorbs characters to fight alongside her in a diverse world inspired by various cultures and mythologies. “The story keeps you motivated, as it is also encourages you to different team comps to get different endings or because you like them.”
“The story is pretty one dimensional and nothing surprising but the unique characters breathe life into the story in a way that makes it funny and interesting.”

The gameplay of "Indivisible" is a mixed bag, featuring a blend of platforming and RPG combat mechanics that some players find engaging while others deem repetitive and shallow. While the platforming elements are praised for their depth and challenge, the combat system, inspired by fighting games, often devolves into button-mashing, lacking the complexity and polish expected from its developers. Overall, the game offers a unique experience with beautiful visuals and character designs, but many players feel it falls short in delivering a consistently enjoyable gameplay loop.
“Great story line, great gameplay, great mechanics, excellent platforming.”
“The gameplay feels like Paper Mario combat meets Metroidvania exploration.”
“Indivisible is an extreme form of Metroidvania, extreme in the sheer number of mechanics you're given to use.”
“The gameplay, while not perfect, is enjoyable enough for me.”
“I really wanted to like this game, but everything outside of the core gameplay is just lacking.”
“The gameplay is unique, innovative but not necessarily fun at certain times, much like a QTE battle.”

The graphics of the game are widely praised for their stunning hand-drawn art style and vibrant visuals, which many reviewers liken to titles like "Skullgirls" and "Shantae." However, some criticism arises regarding inconsistencies in art style and graphical quality, particularly in certain cutscenes and environmental designs, which can detract from the overall experience. Despite these issues, the beautiful character designs and animations are often highlighted as the game's standout features.
“Indivisible's strongest quality is probably its visuals and presentation.”
“The graphics are stunning and charming, the musical score is great and as long as you can platform, the game should be no more than slightly challenging.”
“The visuals in this game are spectacular: animations, character details, environments, they are all gorgeous.”
“On the other hand, the game's CGs are a bit lacking in many places, feeling a lot more like placeholders, especially towards the end, and certain parts of the map don't mesh all that well with the art style.”
“The animations are gorgeous, but the art is a hodgepodge of mostly competent work polluted with nonsensical background characters and inconsistent art styles.”
“I bought it expecting a level of quality at least resembling that of Skullgirls, at the very least aesthetically, but it didn't even deliver on that front.”

The music in the game has received a mixed reception, with many praising its quality and integration into the gameplay, describing it as beautiful, catchy, and fitting for various environments. However, some players noted that certain tracks lack memorability and can become repetitive over time. Overall, while the soundtrack is often highlighted as a strong point, opinions vary on its lasting impact and effectiveness throughout the game.
“The soundtrack was surprisingly amazing; some of those songs are legit bangers, probably the most underrated part of this game.”
“The music fits each environment to lend itself to a mystical forest, gloomy industrial empire, or stratosphere-scraping heavenly pillar of enchanted rock.”
“The music for this game is beautiful and brilliant to listen to and fitting to any place you visit during your travels in this game.”
“The soundtrack, voice lines, and especially the writing are honestly just boring to me.”
“Around hour 3 the music starts getting unbearable, which is annoying because I wanted to keep the volume on for the voices.”
“The majority of the game feels incredibly unpolished, the sound/music direction is all over the place and just didn't sound or feel right.”

Character development in the game has received mixed reviews, with many praising the unique and charming character designs and animations, but criticizing the overall depth and writing of the characters. While some characters, particularly the main protagonist, experience notable growth, others are seen as underdeveloped or sidelined, leading to a lack of meaningful engagement with the story. Overall, the game's strong visual appeal contrasts sharply with its inconsistent character development, leaving players wanting more depth and connection to the cast.
“The characters are the true driving force for the overall story, Ajna being one of the biggest turnarounds for character development in a game that I have personally seen -- and that's a good thing.”
“The story and character development is awesome and well-paced.”
“Incredible animations, cool character designs, and a funny combat system; not for everyone I guess, but I'm really enjoying it.”
“Terrible character development.”
“A lot of the characters exist because why not and do things just because and there is hardly any character development.”
“Just don't expect to be blown away by any major plot twists or meaningful character development.”

Overall, players find the grinding aspect of the game to be largely absent, which some appreciate as it avoids tedious level grinding, while others feel it leads to a lack of engagement in combat. The combat system is often described as repetitive and tedious, with many encounters feeling like a chore rather than an enjoyable challenge. Additionally, the game's exploration and backtracking mechanics contribute to a sense of monotony, making the overall experience feel drawn out and frustrating for many players.
“You'll need a second life for grinding.”
“Makes me wish there was more combat in this game or a place where I could grind levels, because there is no grinding in this game, I am afraid.”
“Good concept let down by tedious combat, tepid platforming, and insufferable millennial writing style.”
“The combat and story are fun, but the later areas gave me issues with FPS drops and made the already tedious platforming segments very frustrating.”
“The fights should've been amazing, but most of them are just padding random encounters; the enemies are uninspired, and the fights just feel grindy.”

The humor in the game is widely praised for its quirky and charming dialogue, with many players finding themselves laughing out loud at the interactions between characters, particularly the deadpan humor of Razmi. While some reviews note that the humor can be hit or miss, it generally adds a lighthearted touch to the story, balancing serious moments with comedic relief. Overall, the game's colorful characters and witty writing contribute significantly to its appeal, making it a delightful experience for those who appreciate a blend of humor and storytelling.
“I love the animation and the voice acting is cheesy but it puts a smile on my face because the lines are funny.”
“Extremely lovable characters, funny dialogue moments, but serious when it needs to.”
“The game has a very quirky sense of humor that continues to be spot on for most of the 20-25 hours.”

The emotional aspect of the game receives mixed reviews, with some players finding the story heartfelt and capable of evoking strong feelings, particularly during key moments like the final cutscene and character interactions. However, others criticize the narrative for being clichéd, rushed, or lacking depth, leading to a disconnect with the characters and their emotional arcs. While certain elements, such as character design and voice acting, are praised for their charm, the overall execution of emotional storytelling appears inconsistent, leaving some players feeling unfulfilled.
“And the most important part, after an extremely difficult final boss fight that forces you to use the blocking mechanic instead of being a normal combat, the final cutscene is so good it made me cry and made up for the difficult boss fight.”
“The story is excellent, with bright characters, heart-wrenching character development, and a climax that put my jaw on the floor.”
“I could feel the influence from games like Persona 3, Symphony of the Night, and even Touhou, but it felt more like a shell rather than heartfelt.”
“The story felt incredibly dull and failed to evoke any emotional response.”
“I found the narrative to be unengaging and lacking depth, which made it hard to connect with the characters.”
“The emotional moments fell flat and didn't resonate with me at all.”

The game is widely criticized for its numerous bugs and glitches, affecting various aspects such as combat, platforming, and quest mechanics. Players report issues like unresponsive controls, camera problems in co-op mode, and inconsistent save functionality, which detract from the overall experience. While some enjoy the gameplay despite these flaws, the stability issues are a significant concern that needs addressing.
“For the most part, I found no glitches other than maybe a cutscene messing up one time.”
“An ambitious idea, and massive props for trying a rare combat style, but it would be great to ensure it's as streamlined as an older game, or at least as bug-free.”
“The Linux port is very buggy; its combat can become repetitive, and its story isn't anything special either.”
“This game is buggy as all hell.”
“The platforming is at times buggy or unresponsive with odd hit detection.”
- replayability12 mentions

Overall, the game's replayability is considered limited, with many reviewers noting a lack of content and variety that diminishes the incentive to replay. While some elements, like team customization and hidden secrets, offer slight replay value, the general consensus is that the game is best experienced once, with little to draw players back after completion. Many suggest waiting for potential updates or DLC to enhance the experience.
“The game also has secrets and areas which leads to replayability if you are inclined.”
“The ability to mix and match your team offers strategy and replay value.”
“I just wish there was slightly more replay value once you collected the whole team.”
“Though I highly recommend that you wait for it to go on sale since the length and replayability of the game is somewhat limited, I cannot excuse the admittedly steep price tag for what you get.”
“The story isn't that good, the gameplay is repetitive, the game has little to no replayability, the co-op is lackluster, so the only things that hold this game together are the art and the music.”
“You can blow through the game in about 25 hours (I beat it missing 3 side characters in 17 hours), there's no branching paths from what I can tell, and there's no new game plus (probably because nothing actually grows besides numbers), so replayability is close to none!”

“The score and sound design are all appropriate for the different atmospheres the settings give off, and meaningful themes in the storytelling.”
“Beautiful visuals, some bugs but none game breaking, great atmosphere.”
“I love the graphics, the atmosphere, and the sound design, but the previous points gave me such a hard time (especially the co-op problem) that I got tired in less than 3 minutes after restarting the game.”
“It can be a little hard to gloss over the sudden transitions in atmosphere sometimes, particularly in the beginning of the game.”
“The backgrounds are so vibrant and each present different atmospheres.”

“In terms of performance or glitches, I've had none that I considered completely infuriating.”
“This game is by no means perfect with optimization and bug squashing.”
“Awful optimization, but if you do not alt+tab just after loading in the game, it should be fine and will not crash.”
“Another major annoyance I've run into is that the game is horribly optimized; in some scenes, the frame rate absolutely tanks.”
“Hope the devs will fix this and maybe even patch the game up with bug fixes or better optimization.”

The monetization strategy of the game has been criticized as feeling exploitative, leading players to perceive it as a cash grab rather than a genuine RPG experience, despite its marketing claims.

“This game is not an RPG despite advertising as one; it is a failure if it considers itself one.”
Critic Reviews
Indivisible Review
It looks good (mostly), and has all the qualities that seem like it would make a great game. Not only does it fail to come together coherently, yet it also it lacks a sense of magic or "heart" that the art style would suggest it possesses. While nothing is largely technically wrong with Indivisible, it fails to be engaging as a RPG, its platforming fails to recommend it on this front, and the story never goes anywhere significant to offer this up either. This isn't bad, but it just isn't that good either.

Indivisible is an ambitious game, and there are moments where it seems to buckle somewhat under that ambition. The oddly-paced story, watered-down RPG elements, and inconsistent platforming indicate that this one maybe could’ve used more time in the oven. On the other hand, the beautiful visuals, excellent voice acting, great writing, and top-notch combat prove to be strong elements of an argument in its favor. Indivisible may have some rough edges, but these don’t prove to overly hinder the generally enjoyable and charming nature of this adventure. It may not be perfect, but we’d still recommend you give Indivisible a look; this one’s certainly worth your time.
