Reviews
- The game features satisfying, fluid, and responsive combat with a unique focus and perfect dodge mechanic that rewards skillful play.
- Beautiful pixel art and animations combine with a compelling and well-paced story that adds emotional depth to the boss rush gameplay.
- Bosses are cleverly designed, diverse, and challenging yet fair, making each fight feel memorable and rewarding to learn and master.
- Some bosses and attacks have inconsistent or large hitboxes that can cause frustrating unintended hits.
- The second half of the game significantly increases difficulty by forcing no-hit runs with one-hit deaths and no visible boss health bars, which some players find punishing and tedious.
- Intermissions between bosses with lengthy, unskippable dialogues and walking sections disrupt pacing and player momentum.
story
655 mentions Positive Neutral NegativeThe story in Rubinite is generally praised for being surprisingly engaging, emotionally impactful, and well-integrated with the gameplay, adding depth and atmosphere to the boss rush experience. While some find it simple or somewhat predictable, many appreciate the charming characters, dark fantasy tone, and effective storytelling through visuals and animation. The narrative includes notable plot twists and a rewarding true ending, although the mandatory difficulty spike to access the full story can be divisive among players.
“So I don't really write reviews very often due to the fact that I think most people will already have said what I've wanted to say or I just don't really see the need to, but Rubinite is just one of the best games I've played in a long time. I enjoyed it more than most games I've played over the last year. If you wanted me to say one thing that could be "bad" is that it's not extremely long, but I'm going to be honest, thank God, because this was the perfect experience for me. The game didn't go on for another 40+ more hours just to fill the quota. Rubinite knows what it is: it's a boss rush game with amazing pixel art and a surprisingly well put together story and narrative. It's not too much, it's not too little, and with the time it does take it makes every second (for the most part) feel rewarding, fun, and you fall in love with the characters and story within minutes of them being introduced. So if you want a boss rush game with fun bosses and an extremely good story for what it is, please pick up Rubinite and don't let it rot in your Steam library.”
“The story and the world it's set in are mysterious and spectacular. You get new story after every boss kill and a good amount of it is completely without dialogue, but instead shown with great art and animations. The extra story serves as a great reward for beating bosses, on top of new talismans and currency for new abilities. The game is hard, but it does have a story mode you can swap to if you just want the story. So if you enjoy difficult boss battles and/or a somewhat short but very intriguing story, then I very highly recommend this game!”
“One of those games where even when you lose the fight you keep wanting to try again over and over. The story is good and the designs are amazing. Would recommend.”
“The pacing is completely ruined by these mandatory story segments.”
“The story is very light and especially your first playthrough is very anticlimactic- this is because of the game's boldest decision, which is to only let you get the true ending if you beat the game again without the ability to see health bars and without taking a single hit.”
“The game locks new characters and story and bosses and the true ending behind this mode? Do a forced challenge run and play the game again the way I want you to play it or else you're gonna miss out on half the story! I have no doubt that I'll beat it but my interest in the game just dwindled so fast when I realized I had to replay it 10 times harder with a forced build to reach any sort of satisfying conclusion.”
