The graphics in this game are widely praised for their stunning visuals and immersive environments, often described as breathtaking and comparable to AAA titles. However, many players note that the default settings can be blurry, requiring adjustments such as increasing resolution and supersampling to fully appreciate the graphics. While the overall aesthetic is impressive, some users have pointed out that the game shows its age and can suffer from optimization issues on certain VR headsets.
“The graphics are beautiful, the animals very impressive or cute.”
“Great graphics and the scale/detail of the dinosaurs is mind-blowing.”
“Incredible graphics, fantastic areas to explore and breathtaking vistas.”
“The graphics are absolutely horrible, it's like someone put butter on my lenses; even at 1.5x resolution scaling, it still looks terrible in VR.”
“Even with the graphics card upgrade, and also in Steam settings turning up supersampling to 3.0, and also turning in-game graphics settings all the way up, the graphics were still very poor.”
“Graphics off the bat are blurry; you will have to go into the graphics settings and crank that resolution up to 2x in order to have a decent-looking game and legible text.”

The game's story is generally well-received, featuring an engaging narrative centered around exploration and interaction with a pet dinosaur, which adds a unique charm. While some players find the storyline simple or lacking depth, many appreciate the immersive environments and the blend of puzzle-solving with storytelling. However, issues with controls and clarity of objectives can detract from the overall experience, leading to mixed feelings about the game's execution.
“It's nice to have a VR game that isn't a shooter/hack and slash while also having brilliant graphics and a nice story.”
“The story, the graphics, and design of everything is just awesome and really enjoyable and thrilling. I'd definitely recommend this game if you love sci-fi and dinosaurs!”
“I finished this game after playing it for 6 hours, and oh my god I love it! I loved the story, Leica (your pet T-Rex), the explorations... I wish there will be a second part because there's a small cliffhanger at the end, and the 6 hours felt too short.”
“The story is very very simple, but the voice acting is decent.”
“Simple story, simple gameplay, frustrating controls, not very long.”
“The background story is not very interesting but behind every corner a surprise is waiting for you.”

The gameplay is a mix of light puzzle-solving and climbing mechanics, reminiscent of earlier VR titles, but it suffers from clunky controls and dated mechanics that can frustrate players. While the environments and visuals are praised, the overall experience is marred by slow movement, awkward hand interactions, and a lack of clear guidance, leading to a sense of confusion and tedium. Despite these issues, some players still find enjoyment in the adventure and story elements, though many agree that the gameplay feels simplistic and could benefit from improvements.
“The gameplay is quite immersive; I find myself getting lost in this foreign land of dinosaurs.”
“This game pretty much makes up for that by bringing those awesome climbing mechanics to a vast story-driven world centered around discovery.”
“The controls are not the best but still had a great time with this; the climbing mechanic works well, the visuals are great, and the story is enjoyable with some nice set pieces.”
“The controls are clunky, the mechanics are a bit dated for VR six years later, but the environments and visuals still hold up pretty well.”
“It has very awkward hand movement mechanics; when I played this on the PS4 at release, it seemed fine, but in today's VR world, the hand movement and interaction mechanics are basic and annoying at best. For the most part, you will be aligning your character's hands into the perfect position before being able to climb a ladder or climbable surface. There are also moments when the game refuses to do what it's meant to do, like allowing you to interact with the first scannable item in the game, forcing me to start a new save because my game refused to function properly.”
“Walking in this game is slower than watching paint dry. I know it's most likely to prevent motion sickness as there is no teleport mechanic, but my god, it's slow. There's no run button either, so it's one speed the entire time, and considering you have to do a lot of walking in this game, it's tedious.”

Overall, the game's stability is a mixed bag; while it runs well on certain hardware configurations and features impressive visuals, players frequently report significant bugs and glitches, particularly with controls and locomotion. Many users find the controls unintuitive and frustrating, leading to a less enjoyable experience. Despite its aesthetic appeal, the game's stability issues detract from its overall playability.
“Played over Air Link on Quest 3 and runs great!”
“No glitches to report.”
“Runs great on my GTX 970 and Rift; obviously, the ASW is kicking in.”
“Of course, it would be a lot more fun if the controls weren't so unintuitive and, well, buggy.”
“If you fall (which you will) from certain ledges, there are land glitches that'll kill the player (and it happened to me a lot in the tar pit area).”
“The locomotion and interactions are so difficult and buggy to work with that it makes the game unplayable and very frustrating.”

Overall, the game's optimization is a mixed bag; while some players report smooth performance on high-end hardware, others experience significant issues requiring them to lower graphics settings for a playable experience. Despite the beautiful visuals, many users have noted that performance can be inconsistent, particularly on mid-range systems, leading to frustration with controls and frame rates.
“Performance is top.”
“Runs smoothly with RTX 2060 at 200% upscaling option.”
“Perfect performance (R9 390) on high settings, super sampling 1.4.”
“While it's a bit rough on optimization, having to turn the graphics down to medium, but resolution scale to 2.0 since it looks so blurry at 1.0, it's a really solid experience so far.”
“Good graphics, the story did not captivate and this game has poor Valve Index optimization.”
“My only guess about the mixed reviews is that people are getting bad performance.”

The atmosphere of the game is widely praised for its immersive and well-crafted environment, with many players highlighting the stunning level design and atmospheric tension. While some users noted technical issues with controls and graphics, they felt that the overall ambiance and intriguing story significantly enhanced the experience, making it one of the best atmospheric VR games available.
“One of the best atmospheric VR games I have ever played.”
“Its a quality game packed full of atmospheric tension and intrigue with great graphical detail, realism, and good problem solving during the journey.”
“However, I felt it forced you to soak up the atmosphere of the jungle around you, rather than just quickly teleporting past it.”
“Maybe the controls are not the most comfortable ones, but the atmosphere makes up for everything.”
“Typical VR walking simulator with some puzzles thrown in, that rests rather heavily on the ambience and atmosphere, which are well done.”

The music in the game is highly praised for its fantastic and immersive quality, with many players noting that the soundtrack is memorable and enjoyable enough to listen to outside of gameplay. Composed by renowned artist Jesper Kyd, the background music complements the visuals and enhances the overall experience, contributing significantly to the game's atmosphere.
“I had been after it for a long time as the soundtrack is fantastic; I've listened to it many times over the years, and I thought it would be a nice experience even if it were a 'walking simulator'.”
“It's very immersive, the graphics are very nice (at the 200% setting), and the music is very good (famous Jesper Kyd).”
“The background music is on point.”
“The sound is phenomenal, just hearing dozens of nearby dinos, both in the air climbing the cave walls and roaring in the distance all adds to the immersion, not including the sweet music.”

Players find the grinding aspect of the game tedious due to the slow walking speed, which lacks a run option, making exploration feel laborious. While there are some puzzle elements and minor jumpscares, the overall experience is marred by the excessive walking required, leading to frustration among users.
“Walking, yeah, caps locked that mofo. Walking in this game is slower than watching paint dry. I know it's most likely to stop motion sickness as there is no teleport mechanic, but my god, it's slow as f***. No run button either, so it's one speed the entire time. Considering you have to do a whole lot of walking in this game, it's tedious. I don't remember it being this slow on the PS4, but it most likely was.”
“Lots of walking (no running) can be a bit tedious. Climbing and some minor puzzle solving - with a couple of small raptor-based jumpscares for good measure. I think the Horizon game on the PSVR2 owes a lot to Robinson: The Journey - there are moments the games look/play almost identical.”

“The actual fine controls are hilariously terrible.”
“You are not alone, but accompanied by a dog-like dino and a funny robot.”

“The game offers a unique experience that encourages multiple playthroughs, making it a great choice for those who love exploring different strategies.”
“With various choices and outcomes, each playthrough feels fresh and engaging, enhancing the overall replayability.”
“Please, developers, consider an update to allow players to replay any scene after completing the game, so we can confront some of these dinosaurs again for more replay value.”
“No real replayability, but a must-have for VR owners and dinosaur fans!”

Robinson: The Journey Review - PS4
If you want to show off PSVR to your friends, Robinson: The Journey is the game that you use to do it. Equally, if you want to lose yourself in your very own Jurassic Park-style fantasy, Robinson: The Journey is undoubtedly a triumph in this respect; just don’t expect to find an overly challenging core lurking underneath its resplendent veneer.
