  • Engaging and fun retro-style FPS combining pulp adventure, WWII themes, and Lovecraftian horror with a unique atmosphere and solid narrative.
  • Varied and plentiful enemy roster including Nazis, cultists, robots, and cosmic horrors, keeping combat fresh and challenging.
  • Well-designed levels with secrets and collectibles that reward exploration, plus satisfying and diverse weapons including a notably powerful starting revolver.
  • Weapon and enemy balance issues, especially an overpowered starting revolver and underwhelming later weapons like the shotgun and machine gun.
  • Lack of mid-level save points or checkpoints causing frustrating level restarts on death, compounded by occasional bugs and crashes.
  • High difficulty spikes with some enemies having near-instant hitscan attacks and sometimes tedious level design with large or confusing layouts.
  • graphics
    15 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's graphics embrace a deliberately retro, pixelated art style that prioritizes clarity, atmosphere, and nostalgic charm over modern realism. While the visuals are relatively basic compared to other engine titles, their variety and old-school aesthetic evoke classic '90s shooters, appealing especially to fans of boomer shooters. Overall, the graphics are a passionate indie effort that successfully blends nostalgia with fun, despite some minor graphical imperfections.

    • “Stylewise, Qatcoc has a more basic art style than other games I've played using this engine but makes up for that with the sheer amount of variety in the visuals.”
    • “Visually, the game adopts a deliberately old-school aesthetic, favoring clarity and atmosphere over technical fidelity.”
    • “In an age where gaming graphics strive for ever-increasing realism, there's a special kind of magic in a title that unashamedly embraces its pixelated roots and elevates them to an art form.”
    • “While I'm not 100% sure how much tracing was used for some of the graphics, there's no doubt that some of it was used.”
    • “Just don't buy it if you can't stand some bugs, pixel graphics, or if you are bad at boomer shooters, as you'll just end up getting frustrated when you have to start the level over for the 5th time.”
    • “Style-wise, QATCOC has a more basic art style than other games I've played using this engine but makes up for that with the sheer amount of variety in the visuals.”
  • gameplay
    14 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay of "Quartermain and the Cult of Cthulhu" is a polished homage to classic retro FPS, emphasizing fast-paced, skill-based combat with careful resource management and no safety nets like regenerating health. It combines familiar boomer-shooter mechanics with engaging character design, challenging encounters that encourage tactical play, and fun weapon variety. While some animation elements feel derivative, the overall experience is praised for its frantic, atmospheric gameplay and solid shooting mechanics.

    • “Gameplay is built around classic boomer-shooter fundamentals, emphasizing speed, aggression, and spatial awareness.”
    • “Health and resources must be managed carefully, reinforcing the old-school philosophy that survival depends on skillful play rather than safety nets like regenerating health or cover mechanics.”
    • “The weapons are a lot of fun to use (don't sleep on the starting revolver!). Gameplay is challenging and may require a couple of retries, but to me that is an opportunity to figure out new tactics.”
    • “I spotted animations from Doom, Wolfenstein 3D, Heretic, etc. While this doesn't affect gameplay, it is mostly distracting if you're familiar with where the animations were traced from.”
    • “There’s no 'continue' option, only 'new game,' even though I clearly noticed the autosave on the top left during gameplay.”
    • “Gameplay-wise, as you might expect with a Dosman Games-involved retro FPS, the game is structured with the classic retro FPS formula.”
