  • story
    1,027 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The story of "Outcast – A New Beginning" has received mixed reviews, with many players finding it engaging yet flawed. While some appreciate the humor, world-building, and character interactions, others criticize the narrative for being clichéd, repetitive, and reminiscent of other works like "Avatar." The quest structure, often reliant on fetch tasks, detracts from the overall experience, leading to a sense of tedium despite the game's vibrant open world and potential for exploration.

    • “The story is interesting and keeps a good pace, everything is well voice acted, and there is a handy little glossary feature that allows you to quickly view the definitions of alien words mid-dialogue, which definitely helps.”
    • “The main quest is engaging and the side quests often delightful.”
    • “The story is great, the characters and dialogue are varied and vibrant and there's love for the world once again as the game gives you accessibility options like a glossary for terms and systems in the game's world.”
    • “The story is extremely cliché and not engaging and doesn't hold my interest.”
    • “Sadly the story is utter garbage, which ruins the entire experience.”
    • “The main story is bogged down in an enormous amount of world-building side quests, so much so that when the story finally does begin to take off you're almost at the end of the game.”
  • gameplay
    344 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay of "Outcast: A New Beginning" is characterized by enjoyable movement mechanics, particularly the jetpack and gliding features, which enhance exploration in its open world. However, many players noted that the gameplay can become repetitive, with a lack of challenge in combat and frequent interruptions from cutscenes and loading screens. While the mechanics are generally well-received, the overall experience is marred by issues such as clunky controls, a disjointed narrative, and a reliance on familiar gameplay loops that may not impress all players.

    • “The freedom to run, fly, and glide anywhere, and stand on almost anything was a welcome addition, and the movement mechanics in general were enjoyable.”
    • “From a pure gameplay point of view, this is an outstanding game from top to bottom, a decently sized, living open world with plenty to do but doesn't feel like a chore; it's just a straight-up fun game.”
    • “Gameplay flows seamlessly, thanks to the exhilarating jet pack and wing suit mechanics, offering breathtaking aerial exploration.”
    • “Gameplay is interrupted every 30 seconds for either a cutscene or a loading screen.”
    • “The combat is very repetitive with no challenge at all once you know the mechanics; it becomes really easy, and that also includes the bosses, no challenge for them as well.”
    • “There are no puzzles, no quests or choices or anything else that has any effect at all on the storyline or the gameplay in any way, no engaging conversations or even challenging enemies.”
  • graphics
    249 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The graphics of the game have received generally positive feedback, with many reviewers praising the stunning visuals, diverse environments, and impressive art direction. While some noted minor issues such as graphical glitches and performance hiccups, the overall aesthetic and design were highlighted as beautiful and immersive, contributing significantly to the game's appeal. However, a few critiques pointed out that certain character animations and textures felt outdated or mediocre compared to the game's otherwise high graphical quality.

    • “The graphics are top notch and the freedom of movement feels amazing.”
    • “I was very impressed by the gorgeous graphics and the freedom of movement allowed around the game world.”
    • “The graphics are absolutely fantastic, with a huge open world (including a lot of verticality) and massive draw distances.”
    • “Game is ok, story is weird, many bugs (can't shoot at times, while being attacked, and then all of the sudden you can; skip in dialogs, etc....), and game looks old, not very sharp graphics...”
    • “Animations are rigid and character visuals are mediocre to poor.”
    • “Sadly the performance is horrible for the okay-ish graphics this game has, unless you have good hardware.”
  • music
    185 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music in the game has received widespread acclaim, with many praising the orchestral soundtrack composed by Lennie Moore for its ability to evoke nostalgia and enhance the immersive experience of exploration and combat. However, some players noted issues with abrupt transitions and volume adjustments during cutscenes, which detracted from the overall enjoyment. Despite these criticisms, the soundtrack is often described as a standout feature, capturing the charm of the original game while introducing new themes that resonate well with players.

    • “The whole thing just feels authentic, the original composer returns with another great soundtrack and the writing style doesn't miss a beat in keeping the semi-serious tone of the original.”
    • “The beautiful orchestral soundtrack makes exploration of all the vibrant environments feel just like the first game, and the many charming NPCs spouting optional dumps of lore are familiar too.”
    • “The soundtrack is at the level of Star Wars/Indiana Jones, pure magical moments; and even better than the original from 1999.”
    • “The music is a problem for two reasons; first, the score is just your generic Hollywood orchestral music that absolutely doesn't fit in the game.”
    • “The second reason is the OST gets repetitive very fast because it plays continuously, and that, my friend, is a capital sin in an open world game in which players love to dedicate long hours to exploration.”
    • “The result is a music score that seems out of place in most dialogue interactions or even gameplay, and forgettable because it lacks distinguishable themes since it plays continuously without any pause, ruining the immersion that could have been added by otherwise nice ambient sounds.”
  • humor
    125 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The humor in the game is widely praised for its witty dialogue, quirky characters, and light-hearted tone, often drawing comparisons to classic 80s sci-fi. Players appreciate the blend of funny quests and character interactions, with many noting the effective voice acting that enhances the comedic elements. While some find the humor occasionally overdone or clunky, the overall consensus is that it adds charm and enjoyment to the gameplay experience.

    • “The whole game does not take itself too seriously and is strewn with an ironic humor that I enjoyed.”
    • “I love how the characters all have opinions about each other (mostly bad ones, which is absolutely hilarious) and how all the quests are connected: what you do in one corner of the world influences everything else as well.”
    • “The dialogues and side quests are very entertaining, the humor just hits that certain sarcastic spot.”
  • optimization
    115 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's optimization is notably inconsistent, with significant performance issues reported, particularly in densely populated areas and during cutscenes. While some players experienced smooth gameplay on high-end hardware, many others faced stuttering, frame drops, and bugs, especially on lower-end systems. Overall, the game requires further optimization to enhance performance and reduce graphical glitches, despite its appealing visuals and engaging story.

    • “The game felt smooth to play (at least on my PC), quick loading and good performance.”
    • “This is an example that you can make a game with good graphics and well optimized; I was able to play the game with 50-60 fps.”
    • “Beyond that, the game boasts a visually stunning 'peak Unreal Engine 4' open world offering a smooth performance with only occasional microstutters and some unnecessary pop-ins which both hopefully soon will get taken care of through a patch.”
    • “Sadly, the performance is horrible for the okay-ish graphics this game has, unless you have good hardware.”
    • “There are significant performance drops in specific areas and most villages, regardless of settings or hardware.”
    • “It needs some major optimization tweaks; I'm running an RTX 3080 with 32GB of RAM on an SSD and went from around 120 FPS at the beginning of the game on high settings to not being able to hit 60 FPS before I made it into the first little town.”
  • stability
    60 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game exhibits a range of stability issues, including numerous bugs and glitches that can detract from the overall experience, such as audio problems, graphical glitches, and occasional crashes. While some players report smooth performance on high-end systems, many still encounter frustrating issues like enemies getting stuck or controls malfunctioning. Overall, the game is seen as a mixed bag in terms of stability, with many players expressing a level of acceptance for the typical post-launch bugs found in modern games.

    • “Runs great on upper mid-range system. Great animations and voice acting.”
    • “The game looks good, it feels good, it runs great on my system (AMD CPU + NVIDIA 4080, 32GB RAM, game installed on NVMe storage) and after 10 hours of play, I have yet to see any serious bugs or glitches.”
    • “This is a buggy mess.”
    • “Over the course of the game, I experienced a handful of crashes, numerous sound glitches, and even some lines of dialogue that were clearly flubbed by the actors, yet somehow made it into the game.”
    • “Controls are messed up, camera glitches occasionally getting stuck or turning randomly.”
  • atmosphere
    42 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's atmosphere is widely praised for its stunning environments, engaging orchestral score, and a unique blend of humor and adventure, reminiscent of classic space/action-adventure films. • “There are beautiful forests, villages, alien ruins, deserts, mountain passes, all underlined by perfectly atmospheric music from the returning Lennie Moore, and Cutter now has a jetpack that can be used to jump and fly, on land, underwater, or in the air, according to levels of upgrades unlocked.”
    • “A game with a unique atmosphere, this beautiful open world adventure doesn't underestimate the player and rewards for exploring its world and denizens.”
    • “At the same time, the atmosphere of what is happening is closer to Hogwarts Legacy than to Avatar.”
    • “It is interesting to pour into this nonsense, as if you are reading a perky children's book — even glimpses of 'serious drama' do not interrupt the atmosphere.”
    • “The feeling of adventure, mystery, and atmosphere aren't on the same level as the original.”
  • grinding
    28 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Overall, players find the grinding aspect of the game to be minimal, with many noting a lack of traditional grinding mechanics often seen in other titles. However, the gameplay loop is frequently described as tedious and repetitive, particularly due to timer-based missions and interactions with locals, which detracts from the overall experience. While some appreciate the absence of grind-heavy elements, the game's repetitiveness and difficulty spikes can lead to frustration.

    • “Luckily, it's not grinding like in Ubisoft's latest games.”
    • “The gameplay loop is horrendous, tedious, and made worse with timer-based missions (the main reason it's a red thumb).”
    • “This game is extremely tedious and runs poorly even on a good system.”
