The game's story is straightforward and serves primarily as a backdrop for the gameplay, revolving around a typical "stop a terrorist" plot that lacks depth and character development. Players can complete the six missions in about 3-5 hours, with some replayability by switching roles, but many reviewers express disappointment over the brevity and repetitiveness of the missions, calling for more content and additional storylines. Overall, while the missions are engaging and well-designed, the limited narrative and short campaign leave players wanting more.
“The sheer fact that each mission is different for each player is amazing: one simply can't imagine why 'the other idiot can't properly describe or do things' until one (also an idiot) sees things for oneself.”
“The story didn't seem to be a large focus of the game, but it did do a great job of setting the vibe of the futuristic world it's set in.”
“The missions are interesting and challenging, a few are very challenging, which is good because it's so satisfying once you finally succeed.”
“The visual design, music, characters, story, etc., are all thoroughly middle of the road.”
“There is the barest of connections between what you are actually doing, and what the story/world is telling you.”
“The single weak point might be that it's just this one storyline or 'case' being very short.”

The gameplay of "Operation: Tango" is characterized by its engaging asymmetric co-op mechanics, where players take on the distinct roles of a hacker and an agent, each with unique gameplay styles that require effective communication and teamwork. While many players appreciate the variety and creativity in the puzzles, the overall experience is often criticized for its brevity, typically offering around 3 to 6 hours of gameplay, which some feel does not justify the price point. Despite its fun and polished mechanics, there is a strong desire for additional content to enhance replayability and extend the gameplay experience.
“Gameplay is extremely varied and every level/moment is its own unique experience.”
“Easily the best 4.5 hours of co-op gameplay we've had in the past several years.”
“The gameplay is amazing and requires timing, coordination, and using your brain.”
“Genuinely one of the worst games I've played, max 4 hours of gameplay.”
“It's unfortunate to give this game a thumbs down, but the amount of gameplay for the price makes it just a no from me.”
“The worst part is the price tag though of about $20 (depending on your country) for barely 3 hours of gameplay.”

The graphics of the game are widely praised for their charming, stylized art style and vibrant visuals, which effectively complement the gameplay and thematic elements. Reviewers noted the game's polished presentation, engaging character designs, and a fun, cartoonish aesthetic that enhances the cooperative experience. However, some mentioned issues with graphic optimization and expressed a desire for more content to fully appreciate the visuals.
“The graphics of the game are top notch, the game is super smooth and everything seems to just work flawlessly.”
“Beyond that, the artwork and world building are solid, making it a pleasant experience visually.”
“The art style is very pretty and the missions were immersive and fun.”
“I'm probably just too spoiled with the 4K graphics on some games!”
“As for its presentation, Operation: Tango goes for rather cartoonish visuals, with flat textures, simple models, and overall exaggerated features like proportions.”
“The graphics are very colorful and quite pretty, but I think optimization could be a little bit better with this style.”

The game's replayability is generally viewed as limited, primarily due to its short campaign length of around 3-4 hours and the minimal variation in gameplay after completing both roles. While some players appreciate the asymmetrical roles and the option to replay missions from the other character's perspective, many feel that once the game is completed, there isn't much incentive to return. However, additional modes like challenge mode and randomized elements do provide some extra replay value for those looking to extend their experience.
“This game is so fun, lots of replayability and it's nice that it's free for everybody else that plays with you!”
“Playing from both perspectives is really fun and it adds more replayability.”
“Since both roles play somewhat differently, it offers enough replay value for a second round.”
“It's quite short, and has absolutely no replay value.”
“Very little replayability other than to do the other role, but once you understand what the other person sees or controls, the game loses a lot of difficulty and becomes a bit boring.”
“There is no replay value here, it's a one and done deal.”

While some elements may come off as cringeworthy, the overall comedic tone and interactive nature of the game ensure plenty of memorable and funny encounters.
“Left me crying and screaming and laughing in all the best ways - highly recommend :)”
“We had a hilarious evening yelling at each other from opposite sides of our gaming room -- definitely a great evening or two of gaming for a couple or flatmates.”
“The story is straightforward and has an amusing 70s camp humor mixed with cyberpunk aesthetics.”

The game is widely reported to be quite buggy, with numerous players experiencing game-breaking glitches, freezes, and desynchronization issues that often require restarts or reloads. While some users noted improvements in stability after patches, the overall consensus is that the game's technical problems significantly detract from the experience, making it difficult to fully enjoy the gameplay. Despite these issues, many still find the game fun and charming, suggesting potential for future updates or sequels.
“I think it's completely bug-free as of now.”
“The game is fun overall but far too buggy to the point where my partner and I couldn't continue unless we wanted to skip the level, but what is the fun in that?”
“I want to like this game, but the freezes and desyncs make it impossible to play.”
“Playing through each mission once in each role and getting the secret achievements took only 6 hours, and within that time my friend and I encountered game-breaking glitches that we had to relaunch the game completely to fix.”

The music in the game has received positive feedback, with many reviewers praising its quality and ability to enhance the overall experience. It is often described as reminiscent of popular spy movie soundtracks, effectively setting the mood and adding intensity to gameplay. While some found the music to be enjoyable and fitting, others noted that it was not particularly memorable, yet it still contributed positively to the game's atmosphere.
“The music is very reminiscent of popular spy movies and that is great, really gets you in the mood.”
“Many heart racing logic puzzles, stealth action and heart-pounding music, there is never a dull moment.”
“Voice acting is solid, the 2D cutscenes are sharp and snappy and the music sets the tone beautifully.”
“There's absolutely nothing notable here, from the music, to the voice acting, to the sound design, but it never really got in the way of anything.”
“Sound-wise, the game comes with some decent if not too memorable background music as well as similarly average sound design, both of which fit in well.”
“The only thing I can fathom buying this game for is the art style and possibly the soundtrack if that's what you are into.”

Players generally find the grinding aspect of the game to be a mixed experience; while some enjoy the co-op bonding and satisfaction of completing tasks, many note that certain puzzles and minigames can be tedious and repetitive. The game offers a relatively short playtime, with some achievements feeling less grindy than others, but the overall sentiment leans towards a need for patience due to the occasional grindy elements.
“8 hours was enough to play both sides for each of us, and to get 100% achievements (most of which you will get playing both sides anyways, and the few others are fun to get, not grindy).”
“You'll need a second life for grinding.”
“A bit grindy sometimes.”
“Nice idea in concept but the puzzles were unfun, the minigames terrible and tedious.”
“You can beat it at around 2 hours with little replay value, where it ends with a tedious last level.”
“Some tasks are a bit tedious or repetitive, but overall a great experience.”

Overall, the game's optimization has received mixed feedback, with many users noting poor performance and desync issues, particularly on lower-end machines. While the graphics are praised for their vibrant style, players feel that optimization needs significant improvement to enhance the overall experience, especially given the game's price point.
“It's a fun co-op experience, it just needs optimization and a lot more content, especially for $20, only buy on sale.”
“Performance upgrades for people with low-end machines would be awesome.”
“There were some minor desync issues as well which would often affect our performance.”
“Great game, but poor performance and mission 6 likes to fail to reload if you fail, forcing ironman mode.”
“The graphics are very colorful and quite pretty, but I think optimization could be a little bit better with this style.”
- character development12 mentions

Overall, reviews indicate a significant lack of character development, with many players expressing dissatisfaction due to the simplistic story and minimal growth between characters. While the character designs and art style are noted as unique and charming, they do not compensate for the absence of deeper narrative engagement or character evolution.
“The art style and character design are unique, the settings are gorgeous (even the hacker ones!), and a lot of thought was put into what each character's role is.”
“The classic spy vibe is really charming, though the character designs are an interesting choice, but certainly easy to recognize, even in a crowd.”
“The environments and character designs aren't anything to write home about, but I still liked them well enough.”
“There is also no real character development.”
“Finally, there is little character development between Angel and Alistair.”
“Which doesn't give much satisfaction: there is zero story and character development; the story is very simple.”

Operation: Tango Review
Operation: Tango is a clever and appealing take on a co-op spy experience, although it’s short and not really as replayable as it may appear.
70%Operation: Tango review
The ultimate spy fantasy for two people, Operation: Tango is unique, varied and an absolute must play.
90%Operation: Tango Review – Agents are GO!
Operation: Tango gets the look and feel of being a secret agent team absolutely right, with a cool soundtrack to boot. But it’s held back by its hit-and-miss gameplay, which can range from super cool to frustrating. A longer campaign may have let the gameplay expand and deepen, but with only 6 short missions and little replay value, it ends up feeling a little shallow. The upside is, this makes the game a perfect candidate for some DLC.
