  • Unique and fun upgrade system with deep build variety and meaningful weapon/character modifications.
  • Fast, satisfying, and fluid movement combined with engaging gunplay and unique enemy mechanics (modular enemies with detachable limbs that can be reused).
  • Great co-op experience with charming characters, humorous dialogue, and an interesting, atmospheric art style with a fantastic soundtrack.
  • Gameplay suffers from repetitiveness and grindy progression, especially for solo players due to unbalanced difficulty and resource RNG.
  • Enemy design considered repetitive and bullet spongey by some; bosses can be tedious and sometimes glitch or clip through the environment.
  • User interface and mission variety need improvement; some missions are slow or annoying, with occasional bugs and issues in online stability and game balance.
  • story

    600 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game features a mission-based structure similar to Deep Rock Galactic and Helldivers, with varied but currently limited mission types that often become repetitive over time. There is no substantial overarching story or single-player campaign, as the focus lies on cooperative, arcade-style objectives and a grind-heavy upgrade system with randomized loot drops. While the upgrade system and frantic combat receive praise, many players find the mission design repetitive, the progression slow and grindy, and the lack of rich narrative or mission variety a notable drawback.

    • “The game is chock-full of personality and charm, reminding me a lot of Deep Rock Galactic, but instead of mission control being a mystery, Roachard is right there, actively talking and walking around the Saxon ship.”
    • “The core gameplay is excellent: smooth movement and gunplay, fun missions like blowing up spaceships or clearing fungal infestations, a great mod system, and one of the most creative revive mechanics I've seen.”
    • “Scour the planet to achieve hidden secret quests and solve mysteries, uncover hidden lore, laugh at the witty banter between you, your adorable corporate lap-bug Roachard, and your fellow robot coworkers, and reap massive rewards to modify yourself and your guns to completely transform your playstyle with tons of weird and wacky modifications.”
    • “This game is fine enough for what it is, but with no single player story mode and a world that feels very shallow and uninteresting as a result, what am I left with? A game I have no interest in booting back up after less than 3 hours of play.”
    • “Really thought that this was going to be a game with a story that could be completed, but after a few missions with no overarching objectives or through-line to care about, I requested a refund.”
    • “Moreover, the missions feel random and disconnected, never giving you the sense that you’re affecting the world in any meaningful way.”
  • gameplay

    465 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay of this game is widely praised for its fast-paced, fluid movement and snappy gunplay, combined with a unique upgrade and build system that allows deep customization and varied playstyles. Players appreciate the innovative enemy mechanics, including destructible and re-combinable parts, as well as the creative revive system and engaging co-op dynamics. While the core loop is addictive and fresh, some criticism highlights grind in progression, limited mission variety, occasional balance and clarity issues, and the early access state leaving room for polish and content expansion.

    • “The core gameplay is excellent: smooth movement and gunplay, fun missions like blowing up spaceships or clearing fungal infestations, a great mod system, and one of the most creative revive mechanics I’ve seen.”
    • “The gameplay all together is very unique and blends together really well, these devs know how to take inspiration and spin it into its own personality, while making mechanics feel fresh and familiar at the same time.”
    • “This game is super cool, graphics remind me of Borderlands, and the gameplay is very reminiscent of Deep Rock Galactic.”
    • “Not a whole lot of content; don't know why you would release a game with an incredibly tiny variety of gameplay options, just lazy increased difficulty options.”
    • “The core gameplay loop just feels bad.”
    • “The gameplay as it stands is a slog; just the chore of working an objective, while an endless amount of enemies interrupt because this game has no wave mechanics.”
  • graphics

    232 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The graphics feature a unique, stylized art style blending cel-shading with grungy, cartoonish aesthetics reminiscent of Borderlands, Deep Rock Galactic, and Risk of Rain 2. While many praise its creativity, charm, and distinctiveness, some find the visuals cluttered, harsh on the eyes, or overwhelming, especially during intense gameplay. Overall, the graphics support fluid gameplay and run well on modest hardware, though the style is polarizing and may require adjustment time.

    • “It has so much to offer, the campaigns are a blessing, art style is stunning. I was expecting it to be a little undercooked because that is usually the case with shooters with a sense of style but this game delivers, there are so many things to do, give it a try!”
    • “A truly amazing game both in art style and gameplay, clearly a passion project I'm excited to see where this game goes in its lifetime.”
    • “Once again the movement is phenomenal, which really sets the game apart from its contemporaries, that and the acid washed Moebius-type artstyle and this game really comes together to be something special, can't wait to see what updates the devs have in store for the game.”
    • “The graphics hurt my eyes so much and the enemies are just balls with spider arms.”
    • “The art style looks fine in videos, but when you play with it, the forced jagged aliasing, the overlayed static textures, the forced zoom to properly use some weapons can feel a bit sickening even with all the settings tweaked.”
    • “God it is ugly... in a bad way, graphics or design overall are unbearable”
  • humor

    152 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's humor is widely praised for its sharp, witty, and often irreverent style reminiscent of Borderlands but without the cringe, featuring genuinely funny dialogue, character banter, and clever easter eggs that enhance its charm and keep the experience light-hearted and entertaining. Players particularly enjoy the humorous interactions between characters, amusing in-game moments, and the developers’ clear sense of comedic timing, making the humor a significant highlight alongside gameplay. Though occasionally the humor can feel repetitive or hit-or-miss for some, overall it’s considered a strong and integral part of the game's appeal.

    • “The developers have a good sense of humor and cadence, keeping the game feeling like an arcade shooter rather than a grueling trudge like other point insertion PvE games.”
    • “The dialogue between characters is surprisingly funny and unexpected, always throwing you off and making the world feel alive and immersive.”
    • “Add to that well-written, humorous dialogue and a charmingly dirty, grungy art style, making this an overall great and inexpensive shooter!”
  • music

    120 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's soundtrack is widely praised for its dynamic, electronic, and groovy beats that deeply enhance the immersive, fast-paced gameplay and unique visual style. Many reviewers highlight the music as a standout feature, often describing it as catchy, adaptive to gameplay moments, and comparable to renowned soundtracks from games like Risk of Rain 2 and Deep Rock Galactic. Overall, the music is considered a major highlight that adds significant personality and enjoyment to the experience.

    • “The soundtrack is straight fire, it traps you in an electronic trance while rushing around a huge boss, trying to dodge incoming rockets.”
    • “Some highlights are the music being something I look forward to on runs, it fits the game extremely well and is actually just good, tracks like Explosion, Saxito Delivery Day and Wrangler's Last Dance are certified bangers on top of having dynamic music for ambient/combat.”
    • “The characters all feel unique, the soundtrack hits exactly like it should at exactly the right moments, the weapons are all fun to use, the build crafting uses one of the most interesting systems I've personally used, and the dialogue between the characters is absolutely hilarious.”
    • “I usually never turn off the music in games, but in this game I found it necessary as it doesn't fit the game at all personally.”
    • “I knew I was playing something special when I caught myself grumbling, “man I'm having a blast fun but this hub music sucks.” Then I realized—it wasn’t the soundtrack at all.”
    • “I wish Roachard would stop stealing the jukebox and playing weird music about saxitos.”
  • grinding

    103 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Grinding is a core element of the game, with many players finding it rewarding and integral to progression, particularly for farming loot and upgrades. However, the grind can become repetitive and tedious, especially in late game or solo play, exacerbated by low drop rates and RNG reliance. Recent modes and features aim to alleviate grinding pain points, but it remains a significant factor that may impact long-term engagement depending on player tolerance.

    • “Deep Rock Galactic makes grinding engaging but not overly tedious.”
    • “Grinding in Deep Rock Galactic strikes a good balance, making it enjoyable without becoming a chore.”
    • “Sometimes the game can feel a bit grindy, but it remains fun overall.”
    • “The game is kinda fun and there are a lot of weapons and a variety of builds for each weapon, but the game is very grindy and you need a lot of luck. When an upgrade drops it can be for a random character or a random weapon, and then it could be an upgrade that you already own. You can use a consumable to make the upgrade be for one of your weapons or your character, and you can "focus" a weapon to increase the chance for the upgrades to be for that weapon. You can craft upgrades but it's mostly ones you already own so you can reroll its modifiers. You can also craft upgrades you don't own yet but it costs from 4 to 24 of an ultra-rare resource that has a 3% to 45% chance of dropping at the end of a mission, on the difficulties I have unlocked at least.”
    • “While yes I recommend the game I will also be blunt about the things that I am not exactly keen on. Firstly, the weapon drought between level 2 and 10 is honestly quite bad especially with how many games you have to play in order to get to level 10, plus the unlock method isn't very clear on if it's account level or character level. On top of that the biggest issue I have is honestly the saxonite drop rates. While yes I get that it's supposed to be extremely rare, I have done over 50 sessions on tier 3 missions which have a 10% drop rate and I have yet to get even one. The only saxonite I got was one I had no idea I even got from a tier 2 mission which have a measly 3% drop rate, showcasing just how terrible the rates truly are. I mean honestly it feels like it's a 0.3% and a 0.10% chance respectively instead of a true 10% or 3% chance. If this changes I will edit my review but until then my complaints will remain for those who don't enjoy overly grindy games.”
    • “The rng in the game in general is abysmal and ultra grindy.”
  • optimization

    49 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game is generally praised for strong optimization, running well even on lower-end and mid-tier hardware with consistent 60+ FPS and minimal crashes, setting it apart from many poorly optimized modern titles. Some users note minor performance drops during visually busy moments or long sessions, and optimization on Steam Deck and GeForce Now remains an area needing improvement. Overall, the solid performance, especially in handling swarms and fast-paced gameplay, enhances the experience, though further polish and tweaks are anticipated.

    • “The game is great, one of the best horde shooters out there. Optimization is not too much of an issue for weaker hardware.”
    • “Mycopunk runs well on fairly poor specs, so seems to be well optimized.”
    • “Game performance is great. Instead of the current industry standard of never optimizing UE5 games and adding too many filters and effects, you get a Unity game with snappy movement and options to turn off some visual effects if you wish.”
    • “Fix the performance, there is no reason that this game would need an RTX 2080 for 60 fps.”
    • “My main complaint is that there needs to be more attention on performance and optimization, especially since this game's gameplay is built around swarms.”
    • “At the time of writing this there's a lot of stuttering during missions.”
  • replayability

    35 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game is widely praised for its high replayability, driven by diverse difficulty levels, engaging upgrade and build-crafting systems, and an exciting roguelike mode that reduces grinding. Players appreciate the dynamic gameplay, variety of modifiers, secrets, and intense, fast-paced runs that keep each experience fresh and memorable. While some mention a desire for more content or modes, the overall consensus highlights the game's deep, long-term replay value and unique mechanics.

    • “The newly added roguelike mode adds significant replay value and reduces the grinding needed for rarer upgrades, which is greatly appreciated.”
    • “Each drop onto the planet feels like controlled chaos: objectives, extraction, and the constant threat of being overrun combine into runs that are intense, memorable, and wildly replayable.”
    • “Amazing amount of replayability for $15. The upgrade system, although slightly grindy, leads to unique builds and lots of fun quirks.”
    • “Couple this with losing all the dopamine with every new upgrade you get bored of, and you quickly end up with a game that lacks replayability.”
    • “Core game lacks replayability especially in solo.”
    • “Overall incredibly well done, though the game is in need of more content for replayability.”
  • stability

    25 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game generally runs well, especially on Linux and mid-tier hardware, but suffers from various bugs, crashes, and freezes that impact stability, with some issues becoming more frequent after updates. Despite these problems, the active developer support and short missions help mitigate frustration, and many glitches add to the game's quirky charm. However, critical bugs sometimes hinder progress or cause unplayable scenarios, particularly in co-op or lower-end systems.

    • “Runs great on Linux too using Proton GE 10-28; normal Steam Protons didn't launch. Tested on Bluefin and Leap 16 Flatpak.”
    • “Runs great on Linux and fine on macOS (with tools like Crossover). Tried for giggles on a MacBook and was surprised.”
    • “Runs great on mid-tier hardware and has that 'just one more run' vibe.”
    • “Terribly buggy game, problems persist for months without developer acknowledgement.”
    • “Unplayable all of the sudden :( so often the game freezes me in a pause screen while the game plays in the background.”
    • “The only complaints I've had is it sometimes struggles to launch on lower-end PCs, and freezes for durations that make you worry the game will crash when a new player joins.”
  • atmosphere

    19 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's atmosphere is widely praised for its charming, comfy, and humorous vibe, blending gritty, comedic, and immersive elements seamlessly. Coupled with a distinctive art style, engaging soundtrack, and rich lore, the atmosphere enhances the overall experience by creating a passionate and inviting world that keeps players invested.

    • “The art direction, the atmosphere, and the various small but potent details and easter eggs really make the game have a wow factor.”
    • “Great atmosphere, fun and unique guns, interesting upgrade system that leads to lots of build variety and crafting, cool secrets, and great music.”
    • “Love the easy going atmosphere and gameplay loop.”
    • “Sometimes somebody will get pulled out while it's leaving atmosphere.”
    • “The game has a lightly comedic atmosphere around the fact that the playable characters are effectively slaves who have lost the lives they once had.”
    • “The moving and shooting mechanics feel like Roboquest, the terrain and atmosphere of the game feels very RoR2, and the mission system and layout of objectives feels just like Deep Rock, but don't mistake that for feeling "copied" from these games.”
  • monetization

    7 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game is praised for its lack of microtransactions and intrusive ads, providing a refreshing experience without aggressive monetization tactics. Players appreciate the absence of pay-to-win elements, reinforcing the feeling of a genuine, fun-focused project rather than a cash grab.

    • “No in-game purchases as far as I've seen, never gotten a single 'buy this' prompt while playing.”
    • “No microtransactions.”
    • “Popup ads for faradics haunt me in my dreams.”
    • “Like reduced recoil while ads or reduced grenade recharge or reduced x type damage taken.”
    • “It was coming from a loudmouthed advertisement robot.”
  • character development

    6 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The character development is praised for its charming and visually appealing designs, unique and quirky weapons, and fun movement mechanics that enhance replayability. However, some note the limited number of playable characters, with only four available. Overall, character design is engaging and well-balanced, contributing positively to gameplay.

    • “Charming gameplay, fun character designs and voicelines, and down to the visual appeal of the game as well!”
    • “Amazingly fun movement, all the guns are unique and quirky, character design is fun but well balanced.”
    • “The character designs are also fantastic with great movement tech in each allowing for more replayability.”
    • “Playable character design is nothing to write home about; there are only 4 choices available.”
  • emotional

    5 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The emotional impact of the game is intense and varied, eliciting laughter, tears, and a sense of peace. It deeply resonates with players' emotional states, particularly during stressful times, though some early reactions can be negative or conflicted due to limited playtime.

    • “There were nights I laughed, nights I cried, and nights I found peace again.”
    • “After I took destiny down by the river and made it tell me about the rabbits, Mycopunk has made me feel again.”
    • “It perfectly represents my emotional state during crunch time.”
