    130 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay is a blend of engaging campaign levels and a robust level editor that allows for extensive user-generated content, reminiscent of "Mario Maker" but with unique mechanics inspired by "I Wanna Be The Guy." While the campaign is praised for its creativity and accessibility, user-created levels often suffer from poor design and lack of moderation, leading to a mixed experience. Overall, the game features simple yet deep mechanics, with a low skill floor and high skill ceiling, making it enjoyable for both casual players and those seeking a challenge.

    • “The gameplay can be split into two sections, the campaign and user content. The campaign from the small section I played seemed really engaging; I think it's well thought out, presented cleanly, and is accommodating for newer players as well as seasoned players.”
    • “Most surprising was the quality of the campaign levels; they're super creative and do a great job of introducing you to the game's unique quirks and mechanics that might not be obvious at a glance.”
    • “Even if you have no intention of ever creating a single piece of content, there is a pit of infinite gameplay here that gets deeper by the hours as a flurry of new rooms are constantly being pumped out.”
    • “The gameplay can be split into two sections, the campaign and user content. The campaign, from the small section I played, seemed really engaging; I think it's well thought out, presented cleanly, and is accommodating for newer players as well as seasoned players. The user content, I say this with entire sincerity, is absolutely unplayable. Level design is for developers who know what they're doing with the game, not random people who do not know the game. This results in almost every level being subpar garbage, which wouldn't be so bad if the game didn't highly encourage you to dig and find random stuff such as with the roulettes and challenges. It really highlights the core concept of user-made content without moderation or curation just simply isn't engaging enough to be enjoyable. In the sample of 25 or so levels I played, one crashed my game, so if I had that at the end of a roulette or such, my hard work would be instantly null and void; it's not like I could get past it. Another one had a 10-minute waiting room for no reason. Just generally, nothing gives off the impression that the content made would ever be worth playing unless made by the very clearly competent devs.”
    • “On to the mechanics of the game that rely on inputs: bouncing off of surfaces is absolutely terrible, as the height you reach from using the jump key while doing so is arbitrary.”
    • “It makes it seem like the game is meant to have the worst mechanics possible, and whether that's intentional or not, it certainly doesn't make it a good experience.”
  • music
    124 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music in the game receives a generally positive reception, with many players praising its diverse and enjoyable soundtrack that fits various themes and gameplay styles. While the selection is appreciated, there are frequent requests for the ability to add custom music, as some feel the existing tracks can become repetitive. Overall, the music enhances the gaming experience, with standout tracks in both the campaign and level editor, though some players find the campaign music less fitting.

    • “The soundtrack is extremely diverse and well-rounded, fitting a variety of themes and genres.”
    • “The music is amazing, the creations are amazing, the level editor seems extremely well done for a free game; I don't feel as if this game is a free game.”
    • “Oh, and the main menu music and the editor music slaps.”
    • “The campaign music for the game is also mid; it reminds me of Realm of the Mad God's music: fitting for each environment, but it's just bad music.”
    • “I recommend just turning it off because it just does not fit the gameplay at all, unless you're playing community-made levels, because the community definitely does better with the music.”
    • “Second, the songs are (kinda) limiting.”
  • graphics
    58 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The graphics of the game receive mixed reviews, with some players praising the vibrant art style and polished visuals, while others criticize the pixel art as lazy or lacking depth. Many appreciate the nostalgic feel reminiscent of 90s games, though there are calls for more customization options and texture packs. Overall, the graphics are seen as a secondary focus, with varying quality across user-generated levels.

    • “Great music, great visuals, and I can tell a lot of effort was put into it.”
    • “The rest, if I'm honest, I don't see the point in covering, but out of respect for the developers, the graphics are stunning and polished to a fine art, high quality while still capturing the charm of the original IWBTG, and the music picks are a good mix being suitable for relaxing levels or intense ones too.”
    • “10/10, perfect game, amazing graphics, great online mechanic.”
    • “This feature is really godawful, lazy pixel art instead of real graphics.”
    • “It's hard to say if this was because the developer didn't have the skill to create 3D visuals, or couldn't afford to hire someone who does, but it also doesn't matter.”
    • “Games like Terraria and Stardew Valley succeeded despite the bad graphics, not because of them.”
  • story
    24 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's story mode has received positive feedback, with players praising its engaging narrative and overall quality. While some users note the existence of an official story mode, others highlight the game's focus on community-created content and level design, suggesting that the story may not be the primary draw for all players. Overall, the story aspect is considered a strong point, enhancing the gaming experience.

    • “This game is fun and engaging. I like the style, plus the story mode rocks! I think other people should play this 5-star game. Also, don't forget the edit mode is awesome too!”
    • “The community is amazing and the story mode was really good.”
    • “Perfect story, engine, and updates.”
    • “☑ no story”
    • “☑ story?”
    • “Edit: there's an official story mode thing now.”
  • humor
    14 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The humor in the game is described as both crude and over-the-top, with players finding it hilarious despite some feeling it lacks the usual edge of the series. Many recommend it for its funny elements, particularly in the context of a challenging platformer, and highlight the comedic aspects of its gameplay, such as the amusingly lethal "funny apple." Overall, the humor is a significant draw for players, contributing to the game's appeal.

    • “Funny apple kills you 10/10 would recommend.”
    • “It's hilarious!”
    • “Funny little level maker for a very difficult game titled 'I Wanna Be the Guy.'”
  • optimization
    8 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's optimization has been widely criticized, with players reporting significant lag during complex levels and issues with saving replays, which detracts from the overall experience. While the game is still in development and improvements are anticipated, current performance issues suggest a need for further refinement, particularly in handling multiple objects and customization features.

    • “The most surprising thing about all this is that the fan game is still in development. It is still planned to add more things to the game, but at this point, it makes you want to continue polishing the editor to make it better in some aspects such as performance when putting many objects or limitations in some sections such as customizing your avatar kid or the strange way of classifying the 'good' levels. However, everything I said can be improved with the passage of updates because the game is not yet in its final version, so everything I mentioned may change in the future.”
    • “The optimization in this game might be the worst thing ever.”
    • “Moreover, it's happened many times that I've cleared a hard level or gotten a good speedrun time only for the replay to not be saved, causing me to have to repeat a performance over again.”
    • “Rarely on more complex levels, the game lags on my computer, which is unexpected. I think the game is pretty unoptimized.”
  • grinding
    8 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Players express frustration with the excessive grinding required in the game, often feeling it consumes too much time and effort. However, there are moments of camaraderie and excitement when a player finally succeeds after hours of collective struggle. Overall, the grinding aspect is seen as both a tedious necessity and a source of shared experience among players.

    • “Nothing like you and a bunch of strangers grinding a level for hours with no success, only for one of you to clear it, as the others cheer them on.”
    • “You'll need a second life for grinding.”
    • “Too much grinding.”
  • monetization
    6 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game is praised for its lack of monetization, with users noting the absence of microtransactions and ads, which is surprising for a free-to-play title. This approach contributes to a positive experience, as players enjoy limitless content without any financial barriers.

    • “For a free game maker with no ads and limitless content, it feels too good to be true.”
    • “I was also expecting some form of microtransaction store due to its free-to-play nature, but there's no monetization whatsoever.”
    • “As far as I've seen, no sneaky microtransactions.”
  • replayability
    4 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game offers high replayability due to its challenging and engaging campaign, along with various gameplay modes such as hardcore roulette and Mr. Scribble's challenge. Additionally, the presence of leaderboards for multiple metrics further incentivizes players to revisit the game and improve their performance.

    • “I would highly recommend a lot of replay value as the game is active and the campaign is very challenging yet fun.”
    • “Replayability is significantly incentivized by the existence of leaderboards for many metrics, including a number of ways of approaching the game, like (hardcore) roulette and Mr. Scribble's challenge.”
    • “Replayability is also significantly incentivized by the existence of leaderboards for many metrics, including a number of ways of approaching the game, like hardcore roulette and Mr. Scribble's challenge.”
  • emotional
    2 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Players express a strong emotional connection to the game, highlighting its underrated status and the joy derived from the level maker, which fosters a sense of creativity and ownership. The enjoyment of both the campaign and community-created levels enhances their overall experience, leading to a hopeful anticipation for a growing player base.
