"Gods Will Be Watching" delivers a compelling, dark sci-fi story that is rich in moral ambiguity, complex characters, and philosophical themes, with its narrative enhanced by thoughtful writing, pixel art, and a fitting soundtrack. The story's intricacy and emotional depth reward patient players, especially when experienced on higher difficulty modes where gameplay tension complements the narrative. However, many find the storytelling hampered by punishing, often luck-driven gameplay that requires repetitive trial and error, which can detract from immersion and accessibility, though easier modes are available for those focused solely on the story.
“I highly recommend this game if you like challenging games with a good story, but be warned: the gameplay requires a lot of thinking so if you do not like such games this might not be for you.”
“The story is really great - it is a mix of Stephen King's "The Dark Tower", a touch of "Final Fantasy" trademark 'a bunch of individuals vs. one evil super-conglomerate' theme, a dash of "2001: A Space Odyssey" - all that creates a solid, dark, and existential plot.”
“The game is all about a very well written non-linear story. The plot and characters are all interesting and dynamic in their own way, which makes you care about them.”
“Your decisions in the game have no impact whatsoever, no matter what you do the main character is going to go through the exact same sequence of events over and over, sometimes dying earlier (like when you were struggling on first mission) sometimes making it to the end of the full circuit (like when you beat the game and jump in the wormhole).”
“Instead of allowing its players to progress in the story with penalties for the mistakes they made, which would truly change how the game is played and how the story unfolds (which would be extremely helpful considering a point and click game is centered so heavily on story), it restricts the player to ensuring each chapter ends with a very linear story progression (in my experience, keep in mind i haven't beaten it) that can only be achieved through frustrating luck and trial and error.”
“The fact that crewmember will come back after they died in the last mission is true - but if you read and watch carefully the 'dead' crewmembers are some kind of hallucinations - they doing some weird 'the thing' stuff.”
Gods Will Be Watching Review
Gods Will Be Watching is certainly a unique experience, but that doesn't make it an interesting one. It relies too much on random chance and does nothing to compensate for the frustration that will cause. Unless you enjoy punishment you might want to avoid.

Gods Will Be Watching is a very good example of a brilliant idea ruined by faulty implementation. It starts off with a fascinating idea that get slowly but steadily ruined by the tedious micromanagement it requires. It offers a thrilling story and then renders it inconsequential through repetition and a focus on resource management that undermines the dilemmas it’s trying to present, gradually making them less and less meaningful by transforming people and circumstances into numbers or objects that have to fit into a certain pre-established and not quite transparent grid in order to allow you to get to the next level. The tension it attempts to build is squandered by the trial and error approach the game takes, as the be-all and end-all of progression, and its extreme difficulty level and limited array of interactions, combined with the lack of an appropriate way to measure the effects of your actions make it a frustrating micromanagement game. It’s not bad, just unnecessarily annoying and not delivering on its full potential. It’s certainly an interesting take on adventure games, adding new mechanics and a bit of struggle to the usual mix of storytelling and puzzle-solving, and its enthralling theme and mature content make the tedium more bearable. Gods Will Be Watching is the sort of love it or hate it video game affair that only transformative titles that push the boundaries of their genre can present. It’s not trying to make you kick puppies, it’s not trying to make you hold hands and sing Kumbaya, it’s about finding a mixture of the two that leads to your survival and doesn’t give you too many nightmares afterward.
