Reviews
- Beautiful hand-drawn art style and captivating soundtrack that create an immersive Norse-inspired atmosphere.
- Engaging and impactful narrative where player choices have meaningful consequences that affect the story and subsequent games in the trilogy.
- Unique and strategic turn-based combat system that rewards thoughtful positioning and management of resources.
- Combat mechanics are counterintuitive and slow, especially the forced alternating turns and damage tied to health, which can make battles tedious.
- The inability to manually save and frequent autosave checkpoints can lead to frustrating replaying of sections due to tough decisions or combat failures.
- Some story decisions result in sudden character deaths without clear foreshadowing, which can feel unfair and reduce player agency.

8,245 mentions Positive Neutral NegativeThe Banner Saga features a gripping, emotionally charged Nordic-inspired story with deep characters and meaningful player choices that impact the narrative, though the overall plot can feel linear and somewhat fragmented across the trilogy. While many praise its stunning hand-drawn art, beautiful soundtrack, and narrative depth, some find the story slow to start, occasionally confusing due to numerous characters and events, and criticized the abrupt ending of the first installment. The story's strength lies in its blend of survival, sacrifice, and harsh consequences, creating a memorable saga that compels players to continue through the series.

Critic Reviews
The Banner Saga Review (PC)
The Banner Saga is a great game as long as the player is willing to accept its theme and its overall tone, while also harboring at least a little bit of love for the turn-based battle system. Stoic Games understands how to create atmosphere and how to deliver emotions without using huge explosions or impressive character detail. Once combat is engaged, there are tons of options and tactics that a player can try out as long as he is aware that the penalties for defeat and even the consequences of victory can be severe. The Banner Saga is a game that requires tough, careful choices and solid tactical thinking and even if the story doesn’t change much, I can’t wait to find the time to play through it a second time.
