The story in "Daemon X Machina" is widely criticized for being convoluted, poorly written, and filled with anime clichés, making it difficult for players to engage with the narrative. Many reviewers noted that the plot lacks coherence and depth, often introducing numerous characters without sufficient development, leading to a confusing experience. While some players found enjoyment in the gameplay and customization aspects, they generally agreed that the story detracts significantly from the overall experience, with many opting to skip dialogue and cutscenes altogether.

    • “While the story and characters feel convoluted, it feels cool to form little rivalries and the idea that all the characters are being set up so you can fight them later is cool when it pays off.”
    • “The story is pretty good, but it has some over-the-top characters that water down the experience a bit, but if you overlook that you will enjoy the story more.”
    • “The story is a bit weak, but the gameplay makes up for it.”
    • “The story is a convoluted mess that tries to juggle too many characters and factions, making it difficult to follow and care about any of them.”
    • “The dialogue is awkward and filled with unnecessary exposition, often interrupting gameplay with lengthy cutscenes that add little to the overall experience.”
    • “The story is so poorly written and filled with cliches that it feels like a bad anime, making it hard to stay engaged with the plot.”
  • gameplay
    644 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay of "Daemon X Machina" is generally praised for its fast-paced, fluid mechanics and extensive customization options, reminiscent of the "Armored Core" series. While many players find the core combat engaging and satisfying, some criticize the repetitive mission structure and lack of depth in certain mechanics, leading to a mixed reception regarding overall gameplay experience. Despite its flaws, the game is recommended for fans of mecha action due to its solid mechanics and enjoyable combat.

    • “Overall, Daemon X Machina scratches the itch Armored Core 6 left in my brain; it does enough different to feel novel, and the core gameplay is just fun.”
    • “The gameplay loop is fun, and there's a good amount of metagame involved where you're regularly developing and acquiring new parts that feels challenging without becoming overwhelming.”
    • “The gameplay is fast, fluid, and very action-heavy.”
    • “Gameplay feels so dull... story and characters are childish and cringe, in a non-guilty pleasure way - it's just unenjoyable.”
    • “Gameplay is also very bland, very floaty and nothing really feels like it has any weight to it.”
    • “The gameplay is a tedious mess across all fronts, all the way between the core loop of starting and finishing a mission to simply examining equipment to think of a build.”
  • graphics
    222 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The graphics of "Daemon X Machina" feature a distinctive cel-shaded art style that appeals to some players while leaving others unimpressed, particularly regarding character models and environmental details. While the visuals are generally described as vibrant and unique, they are often criticized for being simplistic or reminiscent of older console graphics, especially given the game's origins on the Nintendo Switch. Overall, the aesthetic is a mixed bag, with strong mech designs and customization options standing out amidst a backdrop of inconsistent quality in character animations and environmental textures.

    • “The graphics work well, but the color palette and lighting is really nice.”
    • “The visuals are great, and the game overall is good for that mecha-action fix.”
    • “The graphics are fantastic and the music is awesome.”
    • “The art style for this game was a horrible mistake and it seems the developers realized such and removed it in the sequel.”
    • “The visuals for the weapons and their attacks are some of the worst I've seen since the 80's.”
    • “The graphics are surprisingly disappointing for the era in which it was released, and the voice acting is cringy.”
  • music
    185 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music in the game has received widespread acclaim, with many reviewers praising its energetic and fitting soundtrack that blends rock, electronic, and orchestral elements, enhancing the overall gameplay experience. While some tracks are memorable and engaging, others are noted to be repetitive, leading to a lack of variety over time. Overall, the soundtrack is considered one of the game's standout features, often described as "killer" or "amazing," making it a highlight for players despite some criticisms regarding its layering and placement.

    • “The soundtrack is intense and fitting, featuring a mix of rock, electronic, and orchestral tracks.”
    • “The music is absolutely to die for with memorable tunes while you’re waiting around in the hangar or intense hard rock blaring as you’re battling it out.”
    • “The soundtrack is phenomenal, with the composers having worked on the likes of Soulcalibur, Tekken, Ace Combat, and Armored Core.”
    • “As for the music, this game has some of the worst music layering/placement I have ever seen in a game.”
    • “The music is forgettable, and overall will just feel like you're forcing yourself to play it.”
    • “The amount of times you will listen to a particular song over and over will make you want to rip your ears out.”
  • grinding
    108 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The grinding aspect of the game has received mixed reviews, with many players finding it tedious and repetitive, especially in the endgame where farming for parts and upgrades becomes a significant focus. While some enjoy the grind as part of the mech customization experience, others criticize it for being overly reliant on RNG and lacking meaningful content beyond the grind. Overall, the game appeals to those who appreciate grinding mechanics, but it can become monotonous for players seeking a more engaging experience.

    • “However, acquiring certain parts requires a tedious grind, and regardless of the armor you have, you’ll always get melted by a boss laser.”
    • “The missions themselves are grindy and repetitive with little of interest going on in most of them; some are outright terrible.”
    • “I dropped the game because post-game is only grinding for better parts and doing the same bosses/dungeons over and over again.”
  • optimization
    70 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's optimization varies significantly between platforms, with the PC version receiving praise for its smooth performance and high frame rates, even on lower-end hardware. In contrast, the Switch version suffers from poor performance, including low frame rates and graphical fidelity issues, which detracts from the overall experience. While the PC port is well-optimized and runs efficiently, some players noted occasional slowdowns and performance inconsistencies during gameplay.

    • “Highly optimized, running at 144fps smoothly on an old machine with a Nvidia 760 GTX.”
    • “The game runs smoothly, the keyboard and mouse controls work well, and can be remapped if you prefer something else.”
    • “Performance-wise, it is fantastic; Xseed went above and beyond with this port.”
    • “So thoroughly bludgeoned by its poor Switch performance, framerate, and fidelity, that I didn't recognize the treasure within.”
    • “Having played this on the Switch, all I can say is that the game feels much better on PC, even though it is quite clearly a not-so-optimized port.”
    • “I played the demo on Switch and genuinely enjoyed it, but terrible performance issues plagued my experience and I never ended up buying the game.”
  • replayability
    26 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's replayability is a mixed bag, with many players noting a wealth of content through multiplayer missions, side quests, and customization options that encourage multiple playthroughs. However, some criticize the lack of narrative depth and the repetitive nature of missions, which can detract from the overall experience. While the loot system and various builds offer excitement for some, others find the replay value limited, particularly in the single-player campaign.

    • “There's a large amount of replayability here since it's pretty much impossible to collect all the armor and weapon parts the game has to offer within your first playthrough.”
    • “It has high replayability for grinding for the parts you want or just to try the story again or a specific mission with a new build you came up with.”
    • “The gameplay is smooth and exciting, it has a lot of replayability (including co-op, open exploration, and PvP) and a ton of things to try out.”
    • “The replay value is nonexistent, however.”
    • “And unlike a game like Monster Hunter, there's no replay value in replaying missions or trying to grind for gear.”
    • “The story mode is short, redundant, and mediocre in plot and storytelling, with little replay value in missions.”
  • character development
    21 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Character development in the game is widely criticized for being poorly executed, with many reviewers noting that it is either condensed, rushed, or non-existent. While some characters show potential for growth, most are described as shallow and lacking depth, with forced arcs and abandoned subplots. Additionally, the character designs are often deemed uninteresting or lazy, further detracting from the overall narrative experience.

    • “If you like mechs and guns, lasers, robots, and a great story with character development, then this is the game you need to play.”
    • “The character development I personally thought was fun but nothing to write home to mom about.”
    • “The game has many characters and because it tries to take its time at the beginning, towards the end, all the character development happens all at once.”
    • “Now the one terrible thing is the plot, from cutscenes, dialogue and narrative in general it’s just awful and boring, world construction is nonsensical and character development is either non-existent or just plain stupid.”
    • “Plots or characters are picked up then abandoned, characters have dialogue that goes nowhere, you can't speak with or connect with any of the mercenaries like an RPG, so there is zero character development.”
  • humor
    16 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The humor in the game is polarizing, with some players finding it hilariously over-the-top and reminiscent of anime tropes, while others criticize it as bloated and cringe-worthy. Many appreciate the comedic elements, particularly in combat and dialogue, though some feel the humor often undermines serious moments. Overall, the game's writing is seen as both a source of entertainment and frustration, with a mix of cheesy and absurd moments that can elicit laughter.

    • “The combat is 10/10, the dialogue is anime af but it's made me laugh out loud more than once, and the world/set up is good enough to have me fully invested.”
    • “Sad when it needs to be, funny and light-hearted otherwise, and with no shortage of badass Mad Max one-liners.”
    • “Game's got a hilariously anime campaign that I appreciate.”
  • stability
    15 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Overall, the stability of the game is mixed among users. While many report smooth performance, high frame rates, and minimal glitches, others experience significant bugs, freezing, and crashes that detract from the gameplay experience. The game's performance seems to vary depending on the platform, with some players noting it runs particularly well on the Steam Deck, while others encounter frustrating issues that the developers have not addressed.

    • “Honestly a great game; it runs great, and the combat is fast and fluid.”
    • “Game runs great, up to 200 fps and 4k support.”
    • “Runs great for me, probably the best fast mech action game you can get on Steam right now.”
    • “This game is too buggy and keeps freezing or crashing.”
    • “Combat was well done and fun, the story was good and had great potential, the music was fantastic, etc. however there's a certain point in the game that everything just went to shit, as if the story writers quit and someone who didn't know how to tell a story had to take over the job and certain game mechanics became troublesome due to glitches, which the devs seem to have no interest in fixing.”
    • “Well, since it is in the sky, you fight it in the sky, but it has a move it uses often (like every 10-15 seconds it felt like - might be buggy AI, as other times it didn't do it as often) and it flies above the arena to shoot lasers everywhere.”
  • atmosphere
    9 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The atmosphere of the game is heavily influenced by its diverse soundtrack, which ranges from heavy riffs to funk metal, complementing the overall design and vision. While it pays homage to the Armored Core series, it offers a unique atmosphere characterized by vibrant character personalities and engaging gameplay, though some players may find it less captivating over time. Overall, the game successfully creates a distinct ambiance, despite a somewhat convoluted story.

    • “The music, from heavy riffs ripped straight out of a Fear Factory album to funk metal rap rock, fits well with the game's atmosphere and vision.”
    • “But the elephant in the room is the atmosphere, the design, and the thinking behind Armored Core that made it a great series, incubating a soul of its own.”
    • “Dxm is a homage to Armored Core in many ways, but it has its own color and atmosphere.”
    • “Not even close to the soul and atmosphere that Armored Core 4 and For Answer have been able to capture.”
    • “It fits with the atmosphere but if you're older than 15, you'll probably be over it quick.”
    • “Game mechanics are very reminiscent of Armored Core, although the characters created a somewhat different game atmosphere with their rather embellished personalities, animations, and remarkable stubbornness towards calling me a rookie even as I'm continuously hammering them into the ground.”
  • emotional
    6 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The emotional aspect of the game is criticized for its lack of depth, with players feeling disconnected from the characters during key emotional moments. Many believe that the game rushes into emotional plot points without sufficient character development, leading to cringeworthy scenes rather than impactful experiences. Overall, the emotional engagement falls flat, overshadowed by a preference for gameplay over narrative.

    • “I loved Armored Core; I wasn't the best, but it made me feel smarter and more strategic.”
  • monetization
    2 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game initially received praise for its lack of microtransactions, but later reviews criticized it as a cash grab due to limited content and infrequent updates.

    • “First of all, I want to commend this game for having no microtransactions.”
    • “The monetization model is fair and doesn't pressure players to spend money.”
    • “I appreciate that the game offers plenty of content without requiring additional purchases.”
    • “This game seems to just be a cash grab with not a lot of content and hardly any updates.”
