The sci-fi environment piqued my interest, the levelling up system was great, but everything else was nothing out of the ordinary.
"Collapsed" is a science fiction shooter game that can be played by 1-2 players, either in co-op or single-player mode. You play as one of four unique Hunters, each with their own abilities, skills, and combat styles, and battle through hazardous, procedurally-generated levels filled with enemies and bosses. When you die, you retain all of your loot and items for your next run, allowing you to continuously evolve and improve your character. The game features 9 distinct locations and over 60 enemy types, with hardcore timing-based combat and a vast skill tree to invest in.

The gameplay is a mixed bag, with some players finding it clunky and unintuitive, requiring them to navigate mechanics without much guidance. However, many appreciate the polished and fluid movement, as well as the depth provided by the RPG elements and skill tree, which enhance replay value despite some frustrations with the progression system. Overall, while there are issues, the gameplay is generally regarded as enjoyable and worth the price.
“The game is polished, beautiful, and has great gameplay.”
“Dev's fixed all issues very fast and now I have smooth and challenging gameplay.”
“Generally speaking, I still like its gameplay loop as it provides enough RPG depth for replay value, not to mention its gigantic skill tree.”
“It's really unintuitive designed and the game doesn't tell you what to do, so you have to figure every clunky mechanic out by yourself.”
“It's a bit clunky; with some of the menus and mechanics but it can be figured out, and controls can be changed to make the character feel better to control.”
“The game can be completed under 1 hour, but you have to replay it 9 more times with evolving boss mechanics and stronger enemies (aka new game+).”

The game's hand-drawn art and overall aesthetic are praised for their quality, reminiscent of titles like Dead Cells; however, some users feel that the level designs lack depth and complexity, detracting from the overall graphical experience.
“Great aesthetic”
“Plus I love the graphics.”
“Although the art direction and hand-drawn art is fantastic, the levels themselves are a bit lacking in graphics as they do not have 'depth' or layers to them.”
“While the game does have a similar aesthetic to Dead Cells, I don't think it's all that similar to either of them.”

However, the enjoyable gameplay and fluid movement make combat satisfying, leading to hopes for future content that could improve farming efficiency and enhance the skill tree.
“The game is pretty grindy.”

The story is largely absent, with fragmented messages scattered throughout the maps that make it difficult to piece together a coherent narrative. Players should not expect a traditional storyline, as the randomization leaves the plot unclear and disjointed.
“The story is non-existent; it's hidden in special messages that are all randomized around the maps, so there is really no way to piece it together since you don't know where it starts and where it ends.”
“But don't expect a story.”

Behind the times and lacking in its reason, to imply that Collapsed is an exercise in any of its design would also imply it exerted in the first place. Boring gameplay with no feedback, a story simply uninterested in being told, and a visual design too zoomed out to appreciate, it struggles to find reason in a genre that allows you to exist by default.

Although it’s been out on PC and Switch for a while, Rogue-like action platformer Collapsed has just made its way to PS4. And if you’re a fan of the genre, it’s worth dipping your toes into.
