The sci-fi environment piqued my interest, the levelling up system was great, but everything else was nothing out of the ordinary.
"Collapsed" is a science fiction shooter game that can be played by 1-2 players, either in co-op or single-player mode. Gameplay is described as a mix of clunky mechanics and intuitive controls that can be customized, leading to a satisfying experience once mastered. While the game features a polished design and fluid movement, some players find the progression system tedious and the lack of guidance frustrating. Despite these issues, the gameplay loop offers enough depth and replay value, particularly with its extensive skill tree and new game+ mode.
“The game is polished, beautiful, and has great gameplay.”
“Dev's fixed all issues very fast and now I have smooth and challenging gameplay.”
“Generally speaking, I still like its gameplay loop as it provides enough RPG depth for replay value, not to mention its gigantic skill tree.”
“It's really unintuitive designed and the game doesn't tell you what to do, so you have to figure every clunky mechanic out by yourself.”
“Boring gameplay with no feedback, a story simply uninterested in being told, and a visual design too zoomed out to appreciate, it struggles to find reason in a genre that allows you to exist by default.”
“It's a bit clunky; with some of the menus and mechanics but it can be figured out, and controls can be changed to make the character feel better to control.”

The game's hand-drawn art and overall aesthetic receive praise for their quality and charm, reminiscent of titles like Dead Cells. However, the level design lacks depth and layers, which detracts from the overall graphical experience. While character designs are interesting, they do not compensate for other gameplay shortcomings.
“Great aesthetic.”
“I love the graphics.”
“The flash game art style is cool; certain mods are fun to mess with for a bit, and the character models are interesting.”
“Although the art direction and hand-drawn art is fantastic, the levels themselves are a bit lacking in graphics as they do not have 'depth' or layers to them.”
“Unfortunately, the game's interesting character designs and a decent art style aren't enough to carry it through its mediocre combat, rough audio, and low stakes.”

Players find the game's grinding aspect to be quite tedious, with an inefficient progression system that requires excessive farming for upgrades and resources. While the gameplay is enjoyable and fluid, many hope for future updates to improve the farming experience and diversify the content.
“The game is pretty grindy.”
“Progression system feels a little bit obnoxious due to the seemingly inefficient farming you have to go through, but the gameplay itself is very good and the movement is fluid which makes killing things all the more satisfying.”
“[A monotonous and eventually tedious mission structure, minimal narrative stretched too thin, upgrades eventually force you to grind for rare resources]”

The game's story is largely absent, with fragmented messages scattered throughout the maps that fail to create a coherent narrative. Players find the lack of a compelling storyline and engaging gameplay to be tedious, leading to a sense of disinterest in the overall experience.
“The story is non-existent; it's hidden in special messages that are all randomized around the maps, so there is really no way to put it together since you don't know where it starts and where it ends.”
“Boring gameplay with no feedback, a story simply uninterested in being told, and a visual design too zoomed out to appreciate; it struggles to find reason in a genre that allows you to exist by default.”

The game offers significant replayability due to its procedural generation, which creates varied experiences, although the quality of stages can be inconsistent. Players appreciate the engaging gameplay loop and the depth provided by a large skill tree, enhancing the overall replay value.
“It's procedural, so it does have replay value, though that means the quality of stages can be hit or miss.”
“I still enjoy its gameplay loop as it provides enough RPG depth for replay value, not to mention its gigantic skill tree.”

Behind the times and lacking in its reason, to imply that Collapsed is an exercise in any of its design would also imply it exerted in the first place. Boring gameplay with no feedback, a story simply uninterested in being told, and a visual design too zoomed out to appreciate, it struggles to find reason in a genre that allows you to exist by default.

Although it’s been out on PC and Switch for a while, Rogue-like action platformer Collapsed has just made its way to PS4. And if you’re a fan of the genre, it’s worth dipping your toes into.
