    9 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The graphics of the game are criticized for relying on outdated retro pixel art, which fails to impress and lacks depth, even when resolution options are adjusted. Reviewers note that the simplistic 2D visuals do not benefit from any significant graphical enhancements, resulting in a lackluster appearance reminiscent of console games rather than contemporary PC titles. Overall, the graphics are described as rough and unrefined, lacking the charm and quality found in better-executed retro-inspired games.

    • “Shovel Knight mastered the balance between playable and too hard elegantly, and had an authentically retro art style.”
    • “A choice was made to use obsolete, decades-old retro pixel art as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics.”
    • “While there are options to change the resolution for the game, all this does is scale up the simplistic 2D art assets used to make the game, which makes little or no difference to the graphics quality.”
    • “Without any other substantial graphics tweaks, it's not possible for gamers to improve the lackluster 2D visuals.”

    6 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay of "Cave Brawlers" is criticized for its lack of standout features and frequent interruptions from subscription prompts, detracting from the overall experience. While there is a variety of gameplay elements, they are not utilized effectively, leading to a focus primarily on movement rather than a more engaging combat system or narrative depth.

    • “So I can’t really accuse this game of not featuring the right amount of gameplay diversity, but it’s still a shame that you can’t enjoy them more often.”
    • “The core gameplay will revolve around movement.”
    • “Messages popping up in the middle of the gameplay to ask you to subscribe/like/whatever are not cool nor fun in any playing environment.”
    • “There isn’t much to say in terms of gameplay aspects that would make Cave Brawlers stand out, and yet the sequences that have nothing to do with its combat prove that rookie developer Samuel Arminana had something more complex in store for his Steam debut.”
    • “It lacks the graphical stylings, sound design, gameplay, or narrative of those games.”

    • “Interesting story with an adequate challenge.”
    • “Hardly a success story; gamers just weren't all that interested in the game.”
    • “As with any tongue-in-cheek storyline, our protagonist begins his adventure in an environment that has nothing to do with the overall context and dire situation he’ll be driven towards.”

    3 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's music has received mixed reviews; some players found it unappealing enough to mute it in favor of their own playlists, while others noted that the soundtrack is decent and can be enjoyed on repeat without becoming tiresome. Overall, the lack of voice acting and minimal sound effects contribute to a less immersive audio experience.

    • “The music is pretty good, and I can put it on repeat without it becoming too boring.”
    • “No voice acting, few sounds in between, and a soundtrack that forced me to mute it altogether and just listen to my own playlists.”

    • “The music is pretty okay, being able to be put on repeat without becoming too boring.”

The humor in the game is perceived as hit-or-miss, with some players finding it amusing even when unintentional, while others feel it falls flat, particularly if they don't resonate with its themes. • “For someone looking for a light game that isn't too challenging or too easy, with a sense of humor that appeals to them, the game might be for you.”
