The gameplay of "Blazblue: Entropy Effect" is characterized by its fast-paced, fluid combat mechanics that blend traditional fighting game elements with roguelike features, offering a unique and engaging experience. Players can choose from a diverse roster of characters, each with distinct abilities and playstyles, enhancing replayability through various build options and tactical synergies. While the game excels in combat and visual presentation, some players note a lack of variation in enemy encounters and a somewhat disconnected narrative from the Blazblue franchise, which may affect overall enjoyment for fans of the series.
“Extremely fluid gameplay, fun interactions between runs.”
“The combat mechanics are totally unique to the rogue genre, and each character plays completely differently.”
“The gameplay loop is very addicting, and it just feels really good to play.”
“There is some lack of variation in the actual gameplay from a challenge perspective, having only played 4 full normal mode runs to completion, I've yet to notice any significant difference in enemies or gameplay from run to run outside of my actual character choices.”
“The complete lack of build variety makes the gameplay incredibly dull and repetitive, and its only redeeming feature is the graphics, which in my opinion is not enough to salvage a game like this.”
“However, I did find that the gameplay did have a tendency to get a little bit stagnant in the late stages of the game.”

The story in "Blazblue: Entropy Effect" is largely disconnected from the established Blazblue lore, featuring original characters and a plot centered around a robot navigating a simulation. While some players find the narrative intriguing and appreciate its unique elements, many criticize it for being vague, convoluted, and lacking depth, often feeling like a mere backdrop to the gameplay. Overall, the game is more focused on its roguelike mechanics and combat than on delivering a compelling story, which may disappoint fans seeking a deeper connection to the Blazblue universe.
“As a new fan of the BlazBlue series and story, I was at first disappointed by the fact that the BB characters are simply your 'simulation avatars', but over the course of playing this game, I not only fell in love with the amazing mechanics and the entropy system, which allows you to pick your difficulty as you choose while giving you rewards in return for higher difficulties, but the story, while simple, felt well thought out and carried quite the emotional weight. I enjoyed it thoroughly and was invested enough to replay to find the different endings based on my choices.”
“The story is mysterious and coherent but never more than a framework. It scratches many different itches, offers a thrilling and mysterious story, extremely satisfying gameplay and mechanics, and most importantly love.”
“The story along with it is also pretty interesting to me even if it has been a bit confusing at the start.”
“The only thing is though the story has *nothing* to do with the BlazBlue characters, even though the gameplay revolves around them.”
“If you are a story-focused gamer, look elsewhere.”
“The story is absolute garbage but the combat is fun so who cares?”

The graphics of the game have received widespread acclaim for their stunning visuals and unique art style, often described as a blend of anime aesthetics and cyberpunk elements. Players appreciate the vibrant character designs, smooth animations, and dynamic special effects that enhance the overall gameplay experience. However, some critiques mention issues with visual clarity during intense combat, which can obscure important gameplay elements.
“The graphics are beautiful and smooth.”
“Mesmerizing visuals: Blazblue: Entropy Effect boasts stunning character designs and dynamic special effects that create a visually captivating experience.”
“The visuals are simply amazing.”
“Graphics are basic.”
“Considering basic graphics and small locations, it is very disappointing and spoils the impression dramatically.”
“Lack of visual clarity is actually an issue throughout my playthrough, and I found playing on lower graphics settings just better for performance.”

The music in the game has received mixed reviews, with many praising its energetic and fitting soundtrack that complements the fast-paced action and vibrant visuals. While some players enjoy the synthwave and electronic tracks, others express disappointment over the absence of iconic BlazBlue music, noting that the new soundtrack feels less impactful. Overall, the music enhances the gameplay experience, though opinions vary on its memorability and alignment with the franchise's legacy.
“The action goes hard and the OST and scenic backgrounds follow in tandem, complimenting how the game goes over the top.”
“The music creates the perfect ambiance to balance it all out into a nearly perfect experience.”
“The combat, the design, the music, the audio, the graphics, all of them are amazing.”
“The soundtrack does get repetitive and I zoned that out after a while.”
“Now the curse, the downsides, the music is mid and when a franchise that's used to music from Daisuke of Guilty Gear fame you're going to notice.”
“My main issue with the game is the lack of BlazBlue's iconic music.”

The game boasts high replayability due to its diverse character roster, unique abilities, and a variety of gameplay mechanics that encourage experimentation with different builds and strategies. While many players find the combination of flashy combat and randomized elements addictive, some express concerns about diminishing uniqueness in runs over time. Overall, it offers a compelling experience for those who enjoy roguelike elements and character customization, though opinions vary on its long-term replay value.
“Very enjoyable game, amazing replay value, good engaging story, lovely sub-systems, each character is unique and plays differently, but the game also rewards you for playing all of them and not just one.”
“It's addictively replayable thanks to the variety of characters and a game design that makes it hard to put down — I found myself playing way past midnight without even realizing it.”
“The evotype system that allows you to use your previous runs as a way to mix and match things to your liking gives a lot of variety and replay value, on top of being a wholly unique mechanic that I can't say I've really seen anywhere else.”
“And because of this, it has lost all replayability for me because a run doesn't feel special anymore; before I could say no two runs feel alike while now I say all runs feel the same.”
“As it stands, the key factor this is supposed to have (replayability) is a bit limited by the options in the game itself.”
“Edit: having finished the story 'once', I must say it doesn't have much replay value to complete/find the rest of the particles (I've made the game sufficiently hard for myself with 45 entropy points, beyond that stopped being fun), also the online play seems nonexistent at the moment.”

The game's optimization has received mixed reviews, with some players noting significant improvements in performance and UI clarity after updates, while others continue to experience stuttering issues, particularly in the hub area. Although many appreciate the overall smoothness during gameplay, there are ongoing concerns about poor optimization, especially for certain hardware configurations and control schemes. Overall, while some players find the game well-optimized, others feel that optimization remains a significant issue that detracts from the experience.
“A large bulk of my enjoyment of the game was experimenting with all the options each character had, and improving my optimization run after run.”
“This game is very well optimized.”
“A lot of optimization was done as well; it lags a lot less and the UI has been greatly improved.”
“Unfortunately, the game has very poor optimization.”
“Several patches have been released, which claim to improve optimization, but I am unable to see any notable positive effect from them.”
“But the poor optimization ruins the impression.”

Reviews indicate that the game's grinding aspect varies significantly; while some players find the metagame manageable with story quests providing character unlocks, others describe it as tedious and time-consuming, particularly when pursuing achievements that require extensive runs. The balance between challenge and grind is noted, with some enjoying the excitement of unlocking new characters, while others feel the repetitive nature of grinding detracts from overall enjoyment. Overall, opinions are mixed, with some appreciating the improvements in the latest update that reduce grind, while others still find it excessively demanding.
“The metagame isn't too grindy as long as you do story quests to get free character unlocks.”
“Progression isn't too grindy but still offers a challenge in many cases.”
“Getting all achievements was tedious due to one single achievement that requires the player to get all different combinations of skills, which makes an obligation to have more than 50+ runs. Just for this, it deserves to lose some points; it made me literally play for at least 50+ hours after getting all other achievements.”
“One thing to note is that the game is very grindy with little meta progress for the time invested, and even a boss challenge mode that uses up a 45-minute run for one attempt.”
“The game is meh; the story is very slow and not interesting. The whole conception of some digital spirit going through some training is also very slow and super grindy; sometimes it feels like there is no progress at all.”

Character development in the game is primarily centered around its stunning character designs and visuals, which are widely praised for their appeal and polish. However, many reviewers note that the narrative connection to the broader BlazBlue lore is weak, leaving fans of the original series potentially disappointed in terms of story and character depth. Overall, while the character designs are a highlight, the lack of substantial character development or lore integration may detract from the experience for some players.
“Mesmerizing visuals: BlazBlue: Entropy Effect boasts stunning character designs and dynamic special effects that create a visually captivating experience.”
“First and foremost, the character design and particle effects are absolutely stellar.”
“The visual spectacle and character design are enough to keep players mesmerized and motivated to progress through the game.”
“If you're a fan of mainline BlazBlue for the lore, you might be a bit disappointed about how disconnected from BlazBlue the story of this game is (the only connection to BB is honestly just the playable characters; they don't add any particular value to the story of EE at all).”
“I do not recommend this game for BlazBlue fans looking for more BlazBlue content, or anything consisting of story, lore, or character development for the BlazBlue world.”
“It's weird to go from an IP that has so much color and vibrance in its character designs and backgrounds to this glass of lukewarm tap water.”

Overall, the monetization aspect of the game has received mixed feedback. While some players appreciate the absence of predatory microtransactions and view the game as a solid purchase, others criticize it as a cash grab, particularly in relation to its misleading advertising and the use of familiar IP characters. Despite these concerns, many players found the gameplay enjoyable, indicating that the monetization strategy did not detract significantly from their experience.
“Pretty solid early access without any predatory microtransactions.”
“And this time there are no microtransactions.”
“Also, Arc System Works, thank you for not making this a mobile game with microtransactions.”
“Feels like a cash grab for the IP to enter the action roguelite space.”
“Feels like a soulless cash grab on the BlazBlue IP.”
“Honestly, Entropy Effect feels like a huge slap in the face for BlazBlue fans, and with everything so out of place in this game, I could bet my 20 bucks that BlazBlue characters were only included by the devs to save time and resources to make this cash grab.”

The stability of the game has received mixed reviews; while some players report a smooth experience with minimal bugs and good optimization, others have encountered significant issues such as constant freezes, lag in online modes, and occasional glitches. Overall, performance seems to vary widely depending on the platform and individual setups, with some users praising its performance on devices like the Steam Deck, while others find it unplayable due to connectivity problems.
“Runs great on Steam Deck OLED, a consistent 90fps handheld.”
“The game runs smoothly, no glitches apparent.”
“Despite that it's a great looking game and runs well (it also has a mobile release, go figure) along with fluid gameplay and multiple characters with their own gimmicks.”
“There are constant freezes and lags practically out of nowhere.”
“Game has nothing to do with the BlazBlue series; it feels incredibly cheap and repetitive, out of balance and buggy. I've had twice that my Evo type after killing Susanoo didn't show up in the list for Mind Challenge. The online mode is unplayable due to massive lags even though my connection has no issues, and this just makes the game 10x more boring.”
“Only issue I had was it would suffer from little freezes while playing, but I fiddled with the settings to reduce this.”

Players find the comedic elements, including quirky character interactions and amusing cinematics, to be a delightful surprise that enhances the overall experience. However, some feel that while the humor is enjoyable, it lacks a certain depth to elevate it further.
“Silly cat lady shooting missiles is incredibly funny.”
“Funny cat scientist girl zooming around while launching missiles and orbital strikes?!”
“But damn it's funnier than I thought it would be.”

The game's atmosphere is widely praised for its immersive and captivating environment, enhanced by high-quality voice acting, particularly in Japanese. While some reviewers note that the level design lacks distinctiveness, the overall vibe, especially with its cyberpunk elements and engaging soundtrack, creates a rich experience that resonates well with players. The combination of these elements contributes to a breathtaking world that keeps players engaged.
“It's got an impeccable atmosphere and vibe, way above average voice acting for an indie game (at least in Japanese), and overall is worth every bit of the full price; discounted is practically criminal theft.”
“The world they've created is a breathtaking canvas of colors and atmospheres that never cease to amaze.”
“Gameplay, atmosphere, character, and everything else in the game is perfect.”
“Level design is utterly forgettable, there's zero distinct vibe or atmosphere.”
“Gameplay, atmosphere, character and everything else in the game is perfect.”

“The way that you can save 2 upgrades from a run and then bring 2 sets of previous run upgrades felt very rewarding and made me feel like every run was impactful.”
“Extremely wholesome.”

You don’t need to be a BlazBlue diehard to appreciate BlazBlue Entropy Effect. Its roguelike gameplay features some of the most fun yet complex combinations of button mashing and attack chains. It is far more approachable than most roguelikes I’ve played recently thanks to how it presents complex information to players and gives them opportunities to test out mechanics without relying on trial and error.
