  • Extremely polished and fluid combat with diverse characters and build variety offering a highly satisfying roguelite experience.
  • Vibrant and beautiful pixel art with excellent animations, immersive music, and full voice acting that enrich the game atmosphere and storytelling.
  • Robust meta-progression and difficulty scaling systems keep runs fresh and rewarding, along with well-designed, challenging boss fights and enjoyable co-op support.
  • Visual clutter and screen effects can sometimes overwhelm, making it difficult to track attacks and player position during intense combat scenarios.
  • The spell rotation mechanic and complex UI have a steep learning curve, and certain gameplay aspects such as story, dialogue, and some enemy variety feel lacking or repetitive.
  • Runs tend to be long with some grind involved, and locked DLC content plus intrusive DLC advertising detract from the overall experience for some players.
  • gameplay

    716 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
45% positive mentions, 53% neutral mentions, 2% negative mentions

Astral Ascent's gameplay is widely praised for its fast-paced, fluid, and tightly responsive combat that blends elements of Dead Cells and Hades with unique spellcasting mechanics and diverse build customization. Players appreciate the significant depth and variety offered through multiple characters, weapons, spells, and synergies, making each run engaging and rewarding, though the initial learning curve and multitude of mechanics can feel overwhelming. While some find certain systems like the automatic spell rotation clunky and the gameplay occasionally repetitive or floaty, overall the gameplay loop is highly addictive, polished, and considered the game's standout feature.

    • “A ton of content and super polished smooth and fun gameplay.”
    • “The gameplay loop is solid and perfectly scratches that 'just one more run' itch, with different builds and skill interactions keeping things fresh and engaging.”
    • “The gameplay is super nice and the story and voice acting is interesting!”
    • “I hate the automatic spell cycling, and there are way too many mechanics, interfaces, upgrades, and NPCs to interact with.”
    • “The gameplay loop is needlessly grindy, the enemies and projectiles will often track and teleport to your location regardless of how well you time your dodge, and the length of your runs are ultimately random, as the enemies seem to scale up right alongside you, making any form of progression feel ultimately pointless.”
    • “The base gameplay does not inspire and feels like a basic indie 2D roguelite combined with advanced design without designing the pay-off mechanics that make it work.”
  • graphics

    361 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
56% positive mentions, 42% neutral mentions, 2% negative mentions

The game features a vibrant, charming pixel art style with fluid animations and detailed character designs that many find gorgeous and immersive, enhanced by well-crafted cinematics and voice acting. While some players find the visuals cluttered during intense combat or are less fond of the pixel art aesthetic, overall the graphics are praised for their quality, atmosphere, and cohesiveness with the gameplay and narrative. The art style, combined with bright colors and slick effects, contributes significantly to the game's engaging and whimsical world.

    • “The main selling point seems to be the graphics and voice acting, both of which are in fact very high quality, but the gameplay is more than sufficient to carry the experience as well.”
    • “- amazing visuals (this is probably the best looking 2D game I played), the cinematics and boss intros are very cool.”
    • “The graphics are beautiful, the characters are rad, enemies look great and are really cool and fun to fight and dodge, the animations are fluid, the art is great, the voice acting is solid, the spells are sick, the gameplay is tight, the audio is clean and will make any audiophile's eargasm, I could go on.”
    • “Some mechanics are interesting, but overall it's a very generic roguelite, and also the visuals make my eyes bleed (though in general I am not opposed to pixel graphics, this one looks really crappy for some reason).”
    • “A choice was made to use obsolete, decades old retro pixel 'art' as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics. Secondly, it destroys any hopes the developer had of creating a 'retro aesthetic' as their excuse for the lazy pixelart compromise... it looks completely inauthentic from a retro gaming perspective.”
    • “Visually, this is a hamfisted mess, a dog's breakfast of bad visuals, and this kind of laziness and poor quality should never be foisted on gamers.”
  • story

    327 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
31% positive mentions, 64% neutral mentions, 5% negative mentions

Reviews of the game's story are mixed, with many finding it basic, patchy, or weak compared to top roguelites like Hades; however, others appreciate the gradual, narration-driven storytelling that unfolds over multiple runs, character interactions, and lore which add depth and engagement. While the writing and dialogue can feel cringe or underdeveloped to some, the voice acting, character backstories, and incremental plot progression offer enough intrigue to complement the strong gameplay loop for players who enjoy story elements in roguelites. Overall, the story is seen as serviceable and enhancing the atmosphere but generally not the main draw of the game.

    • “Astral Ascent is the perfect balance of a roguelike being difficult but also making you feel overpowered at the same time with its different ways to upgrade your character on each run. The variety it provides the player to choose between spells and weapons to make every run unique is so plentiful that even if you use the same character over and over again you will not get bored because of the many options and different ways to build your character for every new run. The music and the ambiance of the game is really well made as well as the visuals. The relationship progressions of each encounter with the zodiacs as well as every character in the game really helps immersion with how the dialogue progresses with your in-game progression, giving each zodiac a unique personality and a nice backstory that unfolds as you progress. Astral Ascent is one of the very few roguelikes I would give a 10/10. Only thing I wish for this game is online co-op and hopefully more DLC in the future. Congratulations to Hibernian Workshop, they made a masterpiece.”
    • “The story unfolds gradually through dialogue and progression, with layers that encouraged me to keep playing.”
    • “The storytelling is delivered in a thoughtful and measured way, not overwhelming the action, but giving it context and heart.”
    • “The story is essentially nonexistent.”
    • “The story/dialogue: this is the weakest aspect of the game.”
    • “The writing is such a problem that the game would be better if there were simply no story or dialogue at all.”
  • music

    252 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
64% positive mentions, 34% neutral mentions, 2% negative mentions

The music in the game is widely praised for its beauty, atmosphere, and ability to enhance both calm and intense moments, often compared favorably to top roguelikes like Hades and Stardew Valley. Composed by Dale North, the soundtrack is described as soothing, cinematic, and fitting perfectly with the pixel art and gameplay, creating an immersive and uplifting experience. While a few note that some tracks can feel repetitive or occasionally mismatched with gameplay intensity, the overall consensus is that the music is a standout feature that deeply enriches the game's world and mood.

    • “Absolutely beautiful pixel art, an amazing soundtrack, fast fun gameplay with tons of options and multiple characters to play.”
    • “The music - ah this is where the charm lives, the soundtrack is lovely, for an action game it feels like it wouldn't fit but honestly it is just so relaxing there has been times mid run where you can stop at benches and sit and I have my characters do so for a while just to listen to the track and marvel at the art.”
    • “The soundtrack is excellent, seamlessly complementing the game's different areas.”
    • “The music, like the main character, is too delicate and borders on being a lullaby in some sections.”
    • “Seriously, I had to mute the music because it made me feel sleepy.”
    • “Entering places with fire all around, enemies trying to murder you, and the music is like a bakery simulator.”
  • replayability

    88 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
48% positive mentions, 49% neutral mentions, 3% negative mentions

The game offers exceptional replayability, driven by diverse characters, numerous weapons and spells, extensive build customization, and layered meta-progression systems. Its roguelike structure and modular difficulty create fresh experiences with each run, providing hundreds of hours of engaging content for players who enjoy experimentation and strategic variety. Regular updates and DLC continue to expand its depth, keeping the gameplay loop rewarding and nearly endless.

    • “An amazing roguelike with a staggering amount of content, replayability, buildcrafting, variety,... the list goes on.”
    • “The insane meta progression, spell combinations, affinities, characters, their weapons and other systems, makes this probably the most replayable action roguelite ever.”
    • “Astral Ascent maintains the legacy of the roguelike genre with polished and satisfying combat, vibrant pixel retro inspired visuals, unique concept, fantastic voice acting, and incredible replay value that will have you longing to return to the game before your latest run is done.”
    • “I think it's an excellent pickup if you enjoy 2D action roguelites but if you're someone that needs the game to set goals for you to keep progressing and wants it to be 100s of hours of replayability, I don't think this is it.”
    • “- really didn't prove how replayable it is as a roguelike.”
    • “If you haven't played those two, don't bother with Astral Ascent, they are both better in every single aspect, gameplay, replayability, progression, graphics, story...”
  • grinding

    48 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
4% positive mentions, 4% neutral mentions, 92% negative mentions

The game features significant grinding in its meta-progression, unlocks, achievements, and endgame content, which some players find tedious and repetitive, impacting pacing and challenge. However, the grind is often balanced enough to feel rewarding for those who enjoy progression and skill improvement, with diverse characters and builds helping to offset monotony. Overall, grinding is a divisive aspect—engaging for collectors and completionists but potentially tiresome for others.

    • “This does make each New Game+ run feel fresh and not tedious.”
    • “Awesome 2D action platformer (90% action, 10% platformer) with a unique spells system, not very grindy meta progression, and still getting free updates after 1.0 that deserves more attention than this.”
    • “Negatives mostly come down to poor pacing and grindy nature of the game.”
    • “That said, the gameplay loop is needlessly grindy; enemies and projectiles often track and teleport to your location regardless of how well you time your dodge, and run lengths feel random as enemies scale up alongside you, making progression feel pointless.”
    • “I really wanted to like it given the positive reviews and beautiful art style, but after eight hours of grinding the same levels repeatedly, I just can't recommend it.”
  • character development

    33 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
67% positive mentions, 24% neutral mentions, 9% negative mentions

The character development is praised primarily for its unique, visually striking designs and distinct personalities, complemented by excellent voice acting and animations. While the game offers varied and enjoyable character playstyles, actual narrative development and dialogue depth between characters are limited. Overall, character design is considered a major highlight, significantly enhancing the game's atmosphere and engagement.

    • “Characters all feel different from each other. I like that they have different variants you can unlock for each character. Bosses all felt very different from each other. Very addicting gameplay loop, I like the randomness but still some choice in how you progress by picking your next room to go in. Not a deep story but really good concept and character design, very smooth and fluent movement.”
    • “The character designs, from the main cast to the 12 zodiac bosses, are excellent and all super cool and full of personality.”
    • “Character design is unique, dialogue is quick and funny, and the voice acting seems just perfect, like I couldn't imagine a different voice on any of the characters that exist.”
    • “My only "real" complaint is that the character designs for the zodiacs and the playable character are kinda boring.”
    • “Little character development in the dialogues with your characters and the zodiacs between first encounters and final runs.”
    • “Its strong character design, hi-bit visuals, tight combat, memorable bosses, and broad build variety have all featured in games you’ve probably played before—there’s nothing ‘new’ here.”
  • optimization

    28 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
29% positive mentions, 50% neutral mentions, 21% negative mentions

Optimization in the game has seen significant improvement since early access, with developers actively addressing initial performance issues that included stuttering and low FPS, especially during loading and dialogue. While combat performance is generally smooth, some users still experience frame drops and occasional lag on mid-to-high-end PCs, indicating room for further optimization. The game is well-optimized for specific platforms like the Steam Deck and supports a high ceiling for build customization without compromising overall performance.

    • “The devs are on top of any and all issues impacting the experience and even pushed out a week-1 patch to increase performance after several complaints with more fixes on the horizon.”
    • “High ceiling to optimization.”
    • “For those with a Steam Deck, it's optimized for it!”
    • “More importantly, the performance was really poor which in a fast-paced action game like this could be really frustrating.”
    • “I've got a GTX 3080 12GB and an Intel i9 11th gen... the only reason a pixel art game should be stuttering at all is just poor optimization or the underlying game engine.”
    • “The game could use some optimizations to reduce frame lag; I've had to set my graphics to very low to make it run smoothly, which is strange considering this is a 2D game and I've had less stylized 3D games run smoother with higher settings.”
  • atmosphere

    21 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
62% positive mentions, 38% neutral mentions, 0% negative mentions

The game's atmosphere is widely praised for its beautiful, cohesive blend of stunning pixel art, engaging character design, and a captivating, atmospheric soundtrack that creates an emotional and immersive experience. Players appreciate the unique, dreamy vibe enhanced by fluid gameplay and thoughtful storytelling, making it stand out strongly among roguelike titles. Overall, the atmosphere is a major highlight, contributing significantly to the game's charm and appeal.

    • “It's the most well thought-out and also beautiful - the game has its own atmosphere, the characters are engaging, this feels very well polished and I wasn't sure at first from watching the videos, I thought it looked cheap and dumb, but the overwhelmingly positive reviews weren't lying - it's amazing.”
    • “The atmosphere of the game and the interaction between the characters is superb, the gameplay is fluid and captivating, in short one of the best rogue-like games played.”
    • “One of the most atmospheric games I've ever played - art and sound are gorgeous, gameplay is fluid, overall an incredible game.”
  • humor

    15 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
93% positive mentions, 0% neutral mentions, 7% negative mentions

The humor in the game is widely praised for its funny characters, witty banter, and entertaining moments, especially when playing with friends. Characters like Kiran stand out as genuinely hilarious without being annoying, and the quick, clever dialogue paired with fitting voice acting adds to the comedic charm. While some players feel the humor wears off after several runs, overall it contributes greatly to an enjoyable and memorable experience.

    • “Lots of fun and funny panicking moments with friends or solo.”
    • “First of all I just want to say I love Kiran so much. I played him instantly when he was unlocked. I love his character, his lines, his everything. He's just so funny, and I've never laughed so much just hearing his banter, his reactions, his thoughts. He's perfect as a funny stereotype dumbass you see in media without being annoying or insufferable.”
    • “Character design is unique, dialogue is quick and funny, and the voice acting seems just perfect, like I couldn't imagine a different voice on any of the characters.”
    • “It's not funny.”
  • emotional

    13 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
100% positive mentions, 0% neutral mentions, 0% negative mentions

The emotional aspect of the game is praised for its atmospheric storytelling, engaging characters, and touching narrative that evoke strong feelings, sometimes even making players want to cry. While the voice acting and dialogue can occasionally feel cringey or overly wholesome, the overall emotional experience, enhanced by a soothing soundtrack and well-developed backstories, contributes to a memorable and heartfelt journey.

    • “In a gaming landscape often dominated by high fidelity graphics and intricate physics, Astral Ascent emerges as a luminous testament to the power of atmosphere and emotional storytelling.”
    • “What sets Astral Ascent apart isn't just its gameplay mechanics or roguelite structure; it's the emotional tapestry woven throughout your journey.”
    • “The playable characters, NPCs, and bosses all have backstory, emotional stakes, and voice acting.”
  • stability

    10 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
40% positive mentions, 0% neutral mentions, 60% negative mentions

The game's stability has notably improved, running smoothly on platforms like the Steam Deck and Switch, though early access bugs still occasionally affect core gameplay and cause frustrating glitches. While some users encounter game-breaking issues, many report a generally stable and enjoyable experience.

    • “It runs great on the Steam Deck.”
    • “Runs great on Steam Deck.”
    • “I also own this game on the Switch, where it runs great!”
    • “I can overlook glitches and bugs in other aspects of the game, but these bugs prevent me from playing the game as intended; they affect core gameplay.”
    • “I remember when the FPS was awful and the co-op mode was extremely buggy.”
    • “Think: a spell can activate twice but mana regeneration freezes until 10 basic attacks have been performed, or a spell's duration lasts three times as long but you take more damage during this duration.”
  • monetization

    4 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
25% positive mentions, 0% neutral mentions, 75% negative mentions

The game features aggressive in-game advertising for DLC, including locked content and characters prominently displayed, which detracts from the experience. While the DLC offers substantial value and is recommended on sale or in bundles, the presence of microtransactions and paywalled content may be off-putting for some players.

    • “Astral Ascent scratches a very particular itch for me. Both the progression and the environment's theming make me feel like I get to experience endgame raid/bossing party content in a classic lite MMO like MapleStory or RuneScape, without the hundreds of days of grinding (and paying for microtransactions or subscriptions) first.”
    • “If you are thinking of getting the game, be aware that it has quite aggressive in-game advertising for the DLC.”
    • “I don't recommend it because the only thing that can be upgraded is magic, which has strange controls involving a combination of buttons to launch and scroll between spells. Plus, there seem to be microtransactions for a new character that requires buying a DLC, so no thanks.”
    • “I really disliked the presence of 'advertisement' in the game. It's not actual ads, but having the DLC character in the middle and DLC-only worlds greyed out with 'DLC needed' feels bad.”
