Asterix & Obelix Slap Them All! 2

Asterix and Obelix slap them all may not be the longest of games or the deepest of games, it does pack a lot of fun into the package. Is this game on the same level as Streets of Rage 4? No but what it does it does well and I would recommend it to fans of the franchise and people looking for a chilled out Co-op game to play. With its short length (most complete in about 4-6 hours, it also does not overstay its welcome.

  • Faithful comic book art style and animations that capture the charm and humor of the Asterix universe.
  • Fun, satisfying beat 'em up gameplay with smooth movement and entertaining combat, especially in local co-op.
  • Improved visuals, better balanced difficulty, and an engaging, funny story with voice acting that enhances immersion.
  • Gameplay can become repetitive due to limited move sets, recycled enemy types, and formulaic combat encounters.
  • Technical issues including crashes, bugs, lack of resolution options, and poor controller support on some platforms.
  • Short campaign length and absence of deeper progression or unlockable content, reducing long-term replay value.
  • story
    11 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The story is generally regarded as good and humorous, capturing the spirit of Asterix and Obelix with comic-accurate elements and engaging dialogue. However, some find the cutscenes stale and the narrative unremarkable, lacking depth and modern progression features. Overall, it effectively supports the gameplay with environmental storytelling and voice acting but remains relatively straightforward.

    • “A very decent beat 'em up, with comic book accurate Asterix, lots of dialogue boxes to skip but beating enemies feels satisfying and has a lot of levels with a nice story to it.”
    • “Not only is it very well done, it also brings a lot to the game: it's easier to get into the story, the jokes are more fun, and it fills the void during the dialogues.”
    • “Also highly funny story about Asterix and Obelix.”
    • “The cutscenes are incredibly stale and the story is unremarkable.”
    • “The story is now "twice as short"!”
    • “What is this, a story for ants?”
  • humor
    9 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The humor in this Asterix game is widely praised for its cartoonish effects, well-written funny characters, and humorous moves, creating a fun and lighthearted experience. Boss encounters and the story add extra comedic flavor, making it especially enjoyable for casual play or multiplayer sessions.

    • “This is the best Asterix game ever; all the cartoonish effects give it great humor and fun.”
    • “Boss encounters bring additional flavor, with exaggerated personalities and attack patterns that fit the humor and tone of the franchise.”
    • “Instead, it thrives as a spirited, humorous romp best enjoyed casually or with a friend in tow.”
  • gameplay
    9 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay follows a traditional beat ’em up style with straightforward combat against waves of enemies but suffers from repetition and limited mechanical depth. While the boss fights show slight variety, sprite layering issues and scarcity of health and food drops can make combat tedious. Overall, it delivers a retro, simplistic experience that lacks evolution or sophistication.

    • “The gameplay follows the traditional beat ’em up formula: moving from left to right, clearing waves of Roman soldiers, pirates, brigands, and an assortment of foes who all seem determined to stand between the Gauls and their objectives.”
    • “The boss fights are slightly more varied than in the first game (which isn't much). The beat ’em up gameplay is somewhat acceptable.”
    • “The game’s greatest weaknesses stem from repetition and limited mechanical depth.”
    • “Even with the attempt at variety across stages, the gameplay loop rarely evolves beyond defeating large groups of similar enemies using the same handful of combos.”
    • “There are some layering issues with sprites that can make combat tedious, and health and food drops throughout the gameplay are far too scarce.”
  • graphics
    7 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The graphics are praised for their sharp, cartoon-style visuals that faithfully capture the look and feel of the original comics and animated films, enhancing the game's charm and nostalgic appeal. However, some users note the cutscenes are stale and the game lacks modern graphical options or settings. Overall, the art style is considered a strong, authentic aspect that complements the lighthearted and fun gameplay.

    • “Graphics are good and faithful to the comic books, voices (in French) are somewhat decent imitations of the characters' voices in the classic animated series.”
    • “The game's art style stays true not only to the comics but also to the animated films, capturing a distinct cartoon aesthetic.”
    • “No volume settings, no button configuration, no graphic options, etc. The cutscenes are incredibly stale and the story is unremarkable.”
    • “While the game makes a good effort to keep things fresh with environmental storytelling and sharp visuals, it doesn’t introduce the kind of deeper progression systems, unlockable moves, or elaborate combos that modern beat ’em ups sometimes incorporate.”
    • “Graphics: cartoon.”
  • replayability
    4 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game offers moderate replayability through increased difficulty, collectibles, and branching paths, though these elements don't significantly change the core experience. However, the lack of online co-op and unlockable content limits its long-term appeal, especially for players seeking extended or shared gameplay.

    • “Overall, I think this game is fun and has replay value if you are the type to advance in difficulty to truly master a game.”
    • “The absence of online co-op marginally restricts replayability, as the game’s strengths are most apparent when shared with another player.”
    • “The absence of online co-op also marginally restricts replayability, as the game’s strengths are most apparent when shared with another player.”
    • “Beat'em ups have never been lengthy games, but with nothing to unlock and no replay value, this feels awfully brief.”
    • “Collectibles, branching pathways, and small optional objectives add a layer of replay value, even if they don’t dramatically alter the core experience.”
  • music
    2 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music features lively, energetic tunes that complement the game's slapstick style, contributing positively to the overall experience.

The game delivers a heartfelt and entertaining emotional experience, serving as a nostalgic tribute to two beloved European cartoon heroes, despite not reinventing the genre.

    • “It may not reinvent the genre, but it offers a heartfelt and entertaining homage to two of Europe's most beloved cartoon heroes.”
  • stability
    1 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game suffers from significant stability issues, including complete freezes early in gameplay, indicating it is quite buggy.

    • “Got a complete freeze on our second game, so it seems quite buggy.”
  • grinding
    1 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Grinding in the game is made tedious due to sprite layering issues during combat, and the scarcity of health and food drops further hampers the overall experience.
