Overall Asterix and Obelix Slap them all is at its core a 90’s beat 'em up and with that comes the usual trappings of the genre for better or worse. Though not as difficult as some of its fellow games in the genre the 50 levels of the game certainly make it a slog to get through. This can very much be someone's first game of the genre as it is easy and intuitive enough for players of all skill levels.
In "Asterix & Obelix Slap Them All!", players control the iconic duo Asterix and Obelix as they brawl their way through various levels set in ancient Gaul and Rome. Utilizing an array of attacks and combos, players face off against a variety of enemies, including Roman soldiers, wild beasts, and even the notorious pirates. The game features both local and online multiplayer, allowing for cooperative play and head-to-head combat.

The graphics of the game are widely praised for their beautiful, hand-drawn comic art style that faithfully captures the essence of the Asterix comics, with great animation and vibrant colors. However, some users noted that the visuals can feel lifeless due to limited background activity and a lack of graphics or audio options. Overall, while the artwork is considered top-notch, opinions on the game's overall quality vary significantly.
“The visuals are spot-on in terms of emulating the comics, and Obelix's slapping animation cracks me up every time.”
“Absolutely lovely graphics, very faithful to the comics in its style and how it follows some of the storylines.”
“The graphic designers really did a great job here.”
“What is also unacceptable is that there are no graphics or audio options.”

The gameplay is widely criticized for being basic, repetitive, and lacking polish, leading to a monotonous experience over its claimed 7-10 hours of playtime. While some users find the mechanics smooth, the overall combat feels dull and unengaging, with limited variety in gameplay elements. Cooperative play is also noted to be inconvenient, requiring an extra controller instead of allowing shared keyboard use.
“Well, there are many levels, up to 10 hours of gameplay, as the creators say.”
“To be fair, gameplay is pleasant and smooth, but too monotonous for 7-10 hours.”
“There are also sometimes 'special levels' with slightly different gameplay and some types of traps in locations.”
“However, the gameplay is too basic and repetitive. I know it’s a beat-em-up, but it doesn’t feel polished and there’s no nuance to the combat. The coop only works if you have an extra controller lying around when two people could easily play on the same keyboard instead.”
“It is mostly very repetitive and the overall gameplay feels weird and gets boring after a while.”
“And the gameplay is incredibly boring.”

The story is a blend of Asterix comic elements, featuring familiar characters and scenarios like wild boars and Romans, but it suffers from a lack of engagement and repetitive storytelling. While the graphics are praised for their fidelity to the comics, the overall narrative fails to captivate players.
“Absolutely lovely graphics, very faithful to the comics in its style and how it follows some of the storylines.”
“We also have everything a good story needs to have about the two Gallic heroes: wild boars, pirates time and again, bandits, prison breakouts, lions, and of course... Romans without end.”
“The story is a mix-up of Asterix comics as far as I can tell, which is okay I guess, but the way it is told is not engaging at all.”
“Repetitive level design, plot (more like - plnot).”
