gameplay
316 mentions Positive Neutral NegativeThe gameplay of *Apico* is characterized by its unique beekeeping and breeding mechanics, offering a blend of relaxation and complexity that appeals to fans of management sims. While the game features a charming aesthetic and a variety of tasks, some players find the mechanics can be clunky and the gameplay loop repetitive, with a notable lack of automation options. Overall, it provides a satisfying experience for those who enjoy exploration and experimentation, though it may require patience and a willingness to engage with its intricate systems.
“Nice music, nice graphics, great and unique gameplay mechanics, where you really have to think and experiment sometimes.”
“The gameplay loop is superb if you like management sims, there's always so much to do and upgrades to find.”
“Absolutely incredible game, so chill and nice but also decently challenging, especially if you're trying to manage a lot of hives at once (though there's no consequences to going as slow as you want, which is great!) and I love all the breeding mechanics, all the different bees, all the different plants, just, all of it.”
“This has been mentioned in other reviews, but it bears repeating: the bee-breeding gameplay loop is too tight for any sort of traditional 'cozy' experience.”
“The gameplay loop feels tight and may feel suffocating for some people (you process 3 frames, some back to refill them, and find 2 more have been finished being filled by the bees).”
“There's a significant lack of automation and somehow a lack of things to do at the same time; your gameplay loop is explore, breed bees or tend to their production and a lot of waiting for the bees to finish, for your auto stations to finish crafting, for the bees to finish breeding and you can't really skip the waiting.”
APICO (PC)
Oh honey, APICO has all the fixins of a good and relaxing farming sim, but with bees! You have an inventory system that allows you to multitask without wasting time or restricting your options. There are little-to-no penalties for playing however you want, whenever you want. The soundtrack is so soothing and laid back that you'll put viewers and bees to sleep. And, there exists an element of surprise within the gameplay loop of beekeeping, breeding bees, and discovering bees that can keep you playing into the wee hours of the morning and can be disabled if you wish to leave less gameplay up to chance. Despite the gigantic tutorial (that could admittedly use some tightening up for new players) and the lack of deep story/community-building that you may expect from other popular farming sims, it is SO easy for one to lose track of time and relax in the bee-pun filled world of APICO. Give APICO some time -- it's an absolute hit, and I'm SO EXCITED to see it grow.

APICO might start off slow, but it becomes intriguing pretty quickly. It’s a chilled experience that allows you to complete the game at your own pace. The crafting and building features are easy to pick up on and enjoy, allowing you to design the island to your liking. But what makes APICO stand out is the beekeeping aspect, breeding different bees to get desired traits and ultimately discovering new bees. The game sneaks a bit of science in the fun, and I’m all for it.
