The story of "Graveyard Keeper" is a darkly humorous and engaging narrative that revolves around a graveyard manager who must complete various quests for quirky NPCs to progress and ultimately find a way back home. Players appreciate the intertwining character storylines and the comedic elements, although many express frustration with the game's reliance on tedious fetch quests and time-gated interactions, which can disrupt the flow of the narrative. While the base game offers a solid storyline, the DLCs significantly enhance the depth and richness of the plot, making them highly recommended for a fuller experience.
“Great storyline and goofy characters.”
“The story explores themes of mortality, morality, and the afterlife, but does so with a lighthearted, often irreverent tone.”
“The storyline is engaging, with a good mix of humor and mystery.”
“The story isn't interesting enough to keep me going after 32 hours.”
“The game is filled with softlock quests, a shallow to non-existent relationship system, a bland setting, nothing to do but fetch quests that are mandatory to progress even in the most basic sense, a tech tree that lacks any form of clarity, and constant having to wait around while doing nothing because certain things can only be done on specific days and the story locks you out of basic activities constantly until you finish the quests.”
“The quests are written in a way that always keep you on your toes, with simple plot-twists and entertaining dialogues.”
A day in the afterlife --- Graveyard Keeper review
Graveyard Keeper makes a lot of bold choices, replacing the friendly, relaxing atmosphere of typical life sims with a more goal-directed structure in a more cynical setting. While I found its pace tedious at times and would have preferred more focus on the grave-tending mechanics, more patient players will find a lot to like in its wealth of well-developed diversions, fantastic art and music, and pitch-black comedic aesthetic.

A game trying to be deeper than its inspirations, but ends up digging a little too deep. Microtransactions: none

A nice relaxed, and horribly inaccurate, management sim. Live your dream of becoming the owner of your very own graveyard! Really fun and addictive game. I was blown away by the sheer amount of stuff to do. As someone who doesn't typically enjoy this genre, this game managed to keep me addicted well into the night. If you enjoy talking donkeys and morally questionable decisions, this is the game for you.
