  • Strong atmospheric horror with effective PS1-style retro graphics and sound design that creates tension and dread.
  • Engaging gameplay featuring challenging puzzles and item management, with two different endings adding replay value.
  • Improved AI and gameplay mechanics compared to similar games by the developer, making it a more accessible and solid horror experience.
  • Game is buggy with glitches such as getting stuck on geometry and enemy AI bugs, causing frustrating progress loss.
  • No save system or checkpoints, leading to repetitive restarts and making the game feel punishing especially due to permadeath.
  • Enemy mechanics can feel unfair or tedious, with relentless chasing, loud startle sounds, and sometimes prolonged hiding periods that hamper pacing.
  • gameplay
    18 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay is described as simple yet engaging, with a solid core loop of exploration, item collection, and gradual escalation of enemy difficulty, creating a balanced horror experience. Despite some bugs, lack of save features, and occasional control issues, players generally find the mechanics intuitive and enjoyable, appreciating the subtle introduction of threats and the puzzle-solving elements. Overall, it offers a fun and immersive gameplay experience reminiscent of classic horror games.

    • “Even with the bugs, this is my favorite Chillas Art game because of the frantic and engaging gameplay loop, and I hope they make another one like it eventually.”
    • “The core gameplay consists of collecting items that will lead you to keys that unlock the children's cages and ultimately help you escape out a heavily fortified door in the basement.”
    • “In this game, the monster starts off weak and slowly gains more abilities instead of just having a bunch of mechanics the player has to look out for; they are introduced slowly as the player makes progress.”
    • “But no save mechanism, glitchy gameplay, and unpleasant bugs were just so overwhelming...”
    • “For some odd reason, the keybind controls always reset, even when entering and leaving buildings—nothing serious anyway, since the gameplay is very simple, with just a few key functions.”
    • “Mechanically, this means you'll be exploring the inn finding lots of items you won't know how to use, pocketing what you can in your four-slot inventory while you are harassed by Yuki-chan.”
  • story
    17 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The story of "Yuki Onna," inspired by Japanese folklore, unfolds gradually through collecting ice crystals and exploring the environment, offering a backstory that is engaging though not deeply compelling. While the narrative is considered better and more accessible than similar games like "Aka Manto," it features some confusing endings and less intense atmosphere but is appreciated for its puzzle elements and piecing together the legend bit by bit. Overall, the story adds to the game's intrigue and complements its exploration and puzzle-solving gameplay.

    • “yuki onna is based on Japanese folklore, and we get to learn about her backstory by collecting ice crystals around the map.”
    • “Enjoyed exploring the house, collecting items, and discovering the story of yuki onna bit by bit.”
    • “There are a ton of clues to figure out, a backstory that is discovered piece by piece, and the fact that you are being hunted!”
    • “The endings are a bit confusing, although the overall story is great.”
    • “The story and game mechanics are better than Aka Manto, but I don't think it's as scary.”
    • “Yuki Onna is less scary, not very difficult, falls short on story and atmosphere, but is far more accessible.”
  • graphics
    16 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The graphics are praised for effectively capturing a PS1-era, retro aesthetic that creates a creepy and eerie atmosphere fitting the horror genre. While some note the visuals are inferior or less polished compared to similar games like Aka Manto, the art style is generally appreciated for enhancing the game's unsettling mood despite some minor flaws.

    • “The graphics help create a very creepy, uncanny atmosphere.”
    • “It has PS1-style graphics that are very well suited for this type of game; the low fidelity of the models and textures combine well with the dark, claustrophobic setting for a surreal and very eerie effect.”
    • “One thing I can praise this game for is its art style; it's great, and I like it.”
    • “The graphics are far inferior to Aka Manto but similar; unforgivable because Yuki Onna came after Aka Manto, so the artist could have used the same graphics.”
    • “The visuals in this are much worse than other Chilla's games.”
    • “Surprisingly fine little indie game, with crusty old graphics and copious amounts of dithering and other filters.”
  • atmosphere
    12 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game excels in creating a tense and creepy atmosphere through effective use of graphics, filters, and varied environments, contributing to a convincing and immersive horror experience. Sound design enhances this atmosphere, though certain audio elements can be irritating, such as the sudden screeching. Overall, the atmosphere is intense, paranoid, and well-suited for fans of Japanese horror, balancing dread with subtle humor to avoid being overly dour.

    • “The graphics help create a very creepy, uncanny atmosphere.”
    • “The game is very atmospheric; it uses filters and props really well to make the place feel like a real location. Despite the story not being remarkable, it's still fun to piece together what happened.”
    • “A great survival horror game filled with amazing horror atmosphere and amazing sound design.”
  • stability
    4 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game suffers from significant stability issues, including frequent bugs and a lack of a proper saving system, leading to frustration rather than challenge. Achievements are notably glitchy, detracting from the overall experience.

    • “Bugged as hell, I gave Shoji his game console and the achievement didn't show up. The lack of a saving system makes the game frustrating rather than hard. Considering that, like other games such as Onryo, the game isn't difficult because it's challenging, but because it's buggy.”
    • “Very buggy.”
    • “If you're an achievement hunter, you may like to know that my achievements were buggy.”
  • music
    2 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music in the game is either absent or minimal, with some users noting a lack of background soundtrack and game over music. However, when present, the soundtrack can be loud and intense, particularly during chase sequences, which may impact the gameplay experience.

  • replayability
    2 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game offers two distinct endings, providing players with meaningful replay value to explore different outcomes.

Users find the humor edgy and irreverent, describing it as very funny and entertaining.
