Yaga
The amazing theme and artwork just can't carry the lackluster gameplay of Yaga. The frustrating luck system affects so much of the game, and it's hard to get invested in the crafting when your weapons just keep breaking.

story
83 mentions Positive Neutral NegativeThe story of the game is a charming blend of Eastern European folklore, featuring a cursed blacksmith on quests set by a tyrannical tzar, with engaging characters and humorous dialogue. While the narrative is enriched by choices that impact the outcome and offers multiple endings, some players found the gameplay repetitive and the side quests less compelling. Overall, the visuals, voice acting, and soundtrack enhance the storytelling experience, making it a delightful journey through myth and legend.
“I loved how the game tells legends and myths of East-European culture in a simple and charming way, making you discover details with hidden quests or with multiple dialogues that change based on your choices.”
“The storyline unfolds like an Eastern European folk story, combining elements of Romanian and Slavic folklore and weaving them into a beautifully narrated fairytale.”
“Best thing the game does is craft the overall story around your own choices as you make them, and then it ties it in a pretty bow at the end; it's quite amazing to watch happen as you play.”
“It became pretty repetitive and I just stopped caring about trying to do side quests and just sped through levels as quickly as I could to hurry up the story.”
“The story is mostly fetch quests.”
“By the time I got to the bride quest line, I was starting to feel the repetitiveness and then when Maria starts up another three quests for you to accomplish, I was at the point of just skipping through dialogue to hurry up with the story.”
Yaga: An Occasionally Tedious Wonder – PC Review
Yaga is an incredibly enjoyable action-RPG roguelike with a beautiful art-style reminiscent of children's fairytales. Its unique setting utilises Slavic folklore in a meaningful way, and a wonderful score further complements this. At times, the combat can be tedious, but there is enough variation and weapon customisation to never get too stale.

Yaga has bags of personality and benefits greatly from being steeped in superbly atmospheric Slavic folklore. It's well-written, features lots of excellently-delivered dialogue and has a fantastically kooky sense of humour, all of which helps to carry it along in spite of its bland level design and run-of-the-mill combat. The choices you make as you play through Ivan's adventure do actually affect proceedings enough that the whole thing warrants more than one playthrough and, if you can make peace with that pretty nonsensical bad luck mechanic and uninspiring gameplay, you'll find a fun little adventure here featuring a cast of characters who are well worth spending some time with.
