Druidstone: The Secret of the Menhir Forest

Druidstone: The Secret of the Menhir Forest is one of those turn-based RPGs that punishes you for every wrong move, as each mission requires almost flawless execution in order to achieve all mission objectives. But the harder the game punishes you, the sweeter the rewards, and when it comes to that the game is 100% fair. The wide array of abilities and gear allows players to employ just about every playstyle they wish, but within some limits. You still need a tank, a healer and one or more damage dealers to have an easier time. Still, I did find that hybrids work as well later in the game. Druidstone is pretty great but not without flaws. Fortunately, the unforgiving strategic combat, charming art style and light puzzles sprinkled in between the fights, far exceed the balancing issues. You just need to keep playing it beyond the first 5-6 missions, you'll find that Druidstone is a hidden gem.

  • Challenging and engaging tactical gameplay that requires strategic thinking.
  • Beautiful graphics and a charming art style that enhances the overall experience.
  • Unique character progression system with meaningful choices for skills and equipment.
  • The story and dialogue are often clichéd and lack depth, making it less engaging.
  • Some missions can feel overly punishing due to constant enemy respawns and time limits.
  • Limited character customization and a small roster of playable characters reduce replayability.
  • story
    1,294 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The story in "Druidstone" is generally considered average, with a mix of humor and typical fantasy tropes, but it lacks depth and character development. Many players find the pacing rushed, with a focus on mission objectives overshadowing the narrative, leading to a feeling of disconnection between missions. While the writing can be amusing, the overall plot is often seen as a vehicle for gameplay rather than a compelling narrative, making it less engaging for those seeking a rich story experience.

    • “The story is simple, but characters are okay; Oiko the mage is pretty funny.”
    • “The story starts off strong with the main character, the warden, being introduced to the druid and acolyte, each one getting to know the others while deciding to work together.”
    • “The story is nice and kept me interested.”
    • “The story is average but the main problem is the pacing; it moves too fast from one plot point to another. While it's not hard to understand, it misses the opportunity to explain its lore deeper (character backgrounds, multiverse, ancient civilization, etc.).”
    • “The story is so boring that reading the dialogue is akin to actively snorting chloroform for an hour.”
    • “The story is complete but I want more of it!”
  • gameplay
    319 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay of the game is characterized by classic turn-based tactics that blend traditional RPG elements with modern strategy mechanics, offering a mix of character progression and puzzle-like combat scenarios. While many players appreciate the intuitive controls and engaging tactical depth, some criticize the mechanics for being overly simplistic or frustrating due to issues like infinite enemy spawns and restrictive mission designs. Overall, the gameplay is seen as challenging yet rewarding, with a strong emphasis on strategy and clever maneuvering, though it may not appeal to those seeking a more narrative-driven experience.

    • “Its tactics gameplay is overall quite strong, combining elements in equal measure from a more traditional strategy RPG (character progression, flowing maps with mixed objectives and ganks/twists) and the more recent trend of strategy puzzlers (simplified hit point system, undoing moves, heavy emphasis on micro movements and manipulation).”
    • “The gameplay is very tactical and heavily rewards clever thinking.”
    • “Gameplay is smooth, and mostly intuitive.”
    • “I just think the game is a weird combination of macro story with characters that are trying a bit too hard, combined with essentially just a jillion compartmentalized tactics/puzzle combat scenarios, and somewhere the formula just isn't rich enough and doesn't evolve enough, and the story is fine but like, we're tactics gamers we're here for the gameplay.”
    • “While the scale and premise seemed promising, the artificial resource scarcity and inconsistent difficulty spikes made for a frustrating gameplay experience through a design that often feels like it’s forcing you to play a certain way.”
    • “A combination of poorly implemented mechanics and mistweaked difficulty completely ruined the experience for me.”
  • graphics
    196 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The graphics of the game have received mixed reviews, with many players praising the beautiful and charming art style, vibrant colors, and high-quality animations that effectively capture a fairy tale atmosphere. However, some users noted that while the visuals are appealing, they can feel generic or cartoonish, and there are occasional inconsistencies in character designs. Overall, the graphics are considered a strong point of the game, contributing positively to the overall experience despite some criticisms regarding clarity and detail.

    • “I love the art style!”
    • “Beautiful graphics, fun and challenging gameplay, but all very intuitive and easy to pick up.”
    • “Graphics are gorgeous and the animations are truly incredible.”
    • “The story, visuals, and audio are all painfully generic.”
    • “This game is a flop in every way; graphics are standard, the menu is horrendous, and the music is murder.”
    • “Awful, childish graphics, no voice acting, terrible sound effects, awful music.”
  • music
    150 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music in the game has received a mixed but generally positive reception, with many players praising the soundtrack for its quality and ability to enhance the game's atmosphere. Highlights include beautiful main menu and world map themes, as well as engaging combat music that fits the game's emotional tone. However, some players noted that certain tracks can be repetitive, and a few found the overall music experience to be average or lacking in variety.

    • “The music is enjoyable and never gets old, which is a lifesaver for the longer missions.”
    • “The visuals were colorful, and the music had a nice presence, with songs ranging from a relaxing flute piece to driving combat music with electric guitars.”
    • “What a wonderful little game, the music is gorgeous, the story is fun and engaging.”
    • “This game is a flop in every way; graphics are standard, the menu is horrendous, and the music is murder.”
    • “Cheap, poorly designed, and uses out-of-place generic game asset music.”
    • “The music is very forgettable.”
  • humor
    87 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The humor in the game is a mixed bag, with some players finding the dialogue and character interactions genuinely funny and light-hearted, while others feel it often falls flat or becomes overly forced. Many appreciate the self-referential and tongue-in-cheek writing style, which adds a whimsical touch to the otherwise typical fantasy narrative, though some critiques highlight that the humor can be jarring or juvenile at times. Overall, while the game successfully incorporates humor into its storytelling, its effectiveness varies widely among players.

    • “Watching my guy get clapped because he dared to move around the centipede twice in one turn was hilarious.”
    • “The writing is funny and doesn't take itself seriously, poking fun at the genre and classic tropes.”
    • “The story is weak (it tries to be funny most of the time... but truth is they're not good at it).”
    • “But your ironic fourth wall quips are just not funny.”
    • “One of those games with unfunny jokes and pop culture references.”
    • “All this leads to a feeling that this game was intended to make you feel like you got kicked in the teeth most of the time, which is quite unfunny and not enjoyable.”
  • grinding
    41 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The reviews indicate a mixed perspective on grinding in the game. While some players appreciate that grinding is not strictly necessary to progress, others find it tedious and feel that it becomes essential due to the game's difficulty curve and limited rewards. Overall, the game offers a blend of replayable missions and strategic elements, but many users express frustration with the grindy aspects, particularly regarding item acquisition and experience gain.

    • “The game is very short; if you are not grinding for Steam achievements, you can complete it in under 10 hours.”
    • “No grinding needed.”
    • “I don't think it was done without careful thought, but the end result is very similar to one where the design aim was to make the game as tedious as possible.”
    • “But it's worth noting things do get a bit grindy due to an insane difficulty curve near the end.”
    • “This fails to give you any feeling of reward for the continuing barrage of tedious and relentless difficulty that it puts on levels.”
  • replayability
    37 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Overall, the game's replayability is generally considered low to moderate, with many players expressing a desire for more content, such as additional playable characters and varied endings. While some missions can be replayed to achieve secondary objectives or try different difficulty levels, the lack of randomness and limited content has left many feeling that once completed, the game offers little incentive to return. However, the potential for future updates and features, like a map editor, could enhance replay value significantly.

    • “Fun 'roguelike' crawler - story is light - characters are entertaining - enough strategy and variables to make scenarios replayable without the feel that you're just mindlessly grinding.”
    • “Druidstone is a very competent turn-based tactical RPG that creates replay value with the additional, optional level challenges that often require you to return to the level when your team has acquired more abilities.”
    • “I really like that it's okay to screw up, the missions are easily replayable and offer no penalties (other than reduced XP), and you can try different tactics to get the bonus objectives.”
    • “There is not much in the way of replayability or secrets.”
    • “Replayability is pretty much nil.”
    • “The missions/maps do not have any randomness to them, and are not replayable much because of it.”
  • atmosphere
    21 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The atmosphere of the game is widely praised for its enchanting fairy tale quality, characterized by bright graphics, charming aesthetics, and a warm ambiance that evokes nostalgia for old-school RPGs. Players appreciate the clever design of encounters, immersive sound effects, and a fitting soundtrack that enhances the overall experience, despite some critiques of the writing. The blend of humor, threat, and whimsical elements creates a delightful and engaging environment, making each moment feel both satisfying and atmospheric.

    • “It does a great job at capturing the fairy tale atmosphere; the aesthetics are campy and great, and gameplay has an element of uncertainty and threat during fights that makes victory very satisfying.”
    • “Each encounter is cleverly designed and feels very atmospheric.”
    • “The graphics are not overly detailed but are generally easy to look at, the style being only slightly stylized and conveying the atmosphere and feel of the location very well.”
    • “The story was alright and did try to be a bit more grandiose than it accomplished, but the soundtrack and atmosphere is what sticks.”
    • “Regarding atmosphere there is one certain place that is very much of the opposite of previous colourful locations and it works really really well.”
    • “I'd love to see a stealth option, a more relaxed atmosphere sometimes and the possibility to explore freely.”
  • character development
    16 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Character development in the game is generally viewed as simple yet enjoyable, with some players appreciating the ability to respec and experiment with different builds. While the main characters are likable and the dialogue is clever, many reviewers feel that the depth of character development is lacking compared to more complex RPGs. Overall, the game offers a rewarding experience in character advancement, though it may not satisfy those seeking profound storytelling or intricate character arcs.

    • “Druidstone is short and simple, but deceptively offers more compelling character development and plot than is common in tactics games.”
    • “Character development: you can respec after (and during, if you want a retry) every mission for free, which allows for testing some very interesting combos.”
    • “Advancing characters is enjoyable; the gem/slot and equipment systems make it almost impossible to screw up character development and allow you to try out many different fun builds for each character.”
    • “For a computer game, it has a solid story and the main characters are likable and fun; just don't expect Baldur's Gate 2 level of story or character development.”
    • “In my opinion, there should've been more character development stories and less (slightly stale) overarching story of good vs. evil.”
    • “While the dialog is somewhat witty and reasonably well written, the game makes only a half-hearted effort at character development for just one character.”
  • optimization
    11 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Overall, the game's optimization is generally well-received, with many players reporting smooth performance and steady frame rates, even on lower-end machines. However, some users experienced crashes when alt-tabbing and noted the lack of a level select menu as a cumbersome aspect of replaying levels. While the visuals and production quality are praised, there are suggestions for further improvements in graphics performance.

    • “You gain additional crystals which boost your abilities as you complete special objectives and are needed for future battles; and they are battles so you can boost your skills as you see fit, lots of choices and optimizations.”
    • “Wonderful visuals, great production value, almost no loading time, great optimization, not a single bug so far.”
    • “In terms of production quality, the game runs smoothly (steady fps) on my limited machine without any major bug to be seen.”
    • “I love tactics games, I love RPGs, and I love puzzle games, but I hate optimization puzzles and puzzles that require repetitive trial-and-error.”
    • “Replaying levels is a cumbersome affair (there are no level select menus) and there's no grading system in place to evaluate your performance.”
    • “Lastly, please touch up and improve the performance of the graphics.”
  • stability
    7 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The stability of the game is mixed, with some users reporting significant bugs and glitches, while others praise it as being bug-free and polished. Overall, opinions vary widely, with some finding it basic and buggy, while others describe it as solid and well-engineered.

    • “It's a challenging, original, fast-paced, beautiful, rich, unpredictable game with the right amount of puzzles. It's not too long, not too short, and is bug-free and polished.”
    • “The programming appears to be bug-free as well.”
    • “The engine is, by my standards, bug-free, feels totally 'solid', and is just awesome.”
    • “Seemingly, this is a buggy game with a very shallow and predictable method to it.”
    • “I'm seeing people claim that Druidstone is buggy.”
    • “It's way too basic for its price; it gives you a weird aftertaste and it's pretty buggy.”
  • emotional
    4 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The emotional impact of the game is largely criticized, with reviewers likening the narrative to uninspired high school fan fiction, describing it as hard, repetitive, and boring. The story lacks depth and fails to engage players, often feeling like a hindrance to the gameplay rather than an enhancement, especially when compared to more acclaimed titles in the genre.

    • “The story is really hard, repetitive, and ultimately boring, with characters that fail to engage.”
    • “The narrative is dull, and I found myself skipping cinematics after just a couple because they were so uninteresting.”
    • “The emotional aspect of the game is lacking, making it difficult to connect with the story and characters.”
