Valhalla Hills pulls at one's nostalgia strings in a sweet way but a couple of issues alongside an honor system that's more of an afterthought than central mechanic it wants to be makes it hard to recommend straight away.
In Valhalla Hills, you lead a group of Vikings, guiding them to build and manage a thriving settlement in a hostile wilderness. Gather resources, construct buildings, and complete various quests to help your Vikings reach Asgard. Navigate through procedurally generated landscapes, facing ever-changing challenges and environments in this construction and management simulation game.

Valhalla Hills: Definitive Edition Review - PS4
Valhalla Hills tries to bring The Settlers II gameplay up to snuff but while it improves in some areas, it completely negates some aspects on what made The Settlers II so much fun in the first place. Building and autonomy is done decently well but with the lack of continuation and multiplayer makes it pale in comparison. Its price for entry is very worrying too and doesn’t help matters.

Valhalla Hills is a well built title easily capable of fulfilling a short term RTS fix. It’s complex without being complicated and rewards players with dozens of unlockables for clever and calculated play. Valhalla Hills’ only real drawback is the lack of a tutorial system that allows players to learn and take advantage of all the things it has to offer. RTS hardcores should find little difficulty with this potential caltrop, but moderate and casual players might have a very hard time.

One thing I adore about the game is its visually charming graphics. The game uses Unreal Engine 4, but uses the power to move away from realistic graphics and produce a simplistic, striking cartoon art that adds personality to the world, while bringing some lovely visual effects, such as the brilliant lighting during the sunset/sunrise. I wouldn’t think of Vikings as cute people you would want to hug (or maybe you would if you’re into the tough look?) but somehow their adorable design pulls this off within the brightly coloured world. A slight hiccup spoils the performance with the frame rate when the game seems to be autosaving. It tanks for a couple of seconds, then spurts back to life. It’s not exactly game breaking in a title like this, but it’s jarring to have to experiencing it every few minutes, especially when you just happen to be zooming out and the game freezes, then jumps to a fully zoomed out view as it misread the input due to the stutter.
