  • gameplay171 mentions

The gameplay in "Trials Rising" is generally praised for its solid mechanics and engaging track design, maintaining the classic feel of the series while introducing new challenges and a robust tutorial system. However, many players express frustration with the game's progression system, which is seen as overly grindy and hindered by microtransactions, detracting from the overall experience. Despite these issues, the core gameplay remains enjoyable and addictive, appealing to both new players and long-time fans of the franchise.

    • “The gameplay is amazing and the maps are really fun to play.”
    • “Trials rising offers engaging gameplay for all skill levels paired with lively maps and a fantastic soundtrack.”
    • “The core gameplay makes it definitely up for me, it's just so much fun and just what I was hoping for.”
    • “The gameplay feels so bad, like in Fusion, it's so clunky... I'm seriously not capable of understanding how they could mess up the smoothness after Trials Evolution... it feels disgusting and clunky, like you would have a huge input lag.”
    • “While the actual gameplay and graphics of Trials Rising are fantastic, Ubisoft has sandwiched it with confusing menus, microtransactions, loot boxes, and a grindy progression that ultimately ruins the experience.”
    • “The tracks in the game range from okay to decent at best, but are relatively extremely easy and less challenging than tracks of previous games, with the mechanics shifted more toward the casual player or extreme neophyte while taking most of the fun aspects of gameplay away from the most loyal part of the Trials audience.”
  • music124 mentions

The music in the game receives mixed reviews, with some players praising the soundtrack as top-notch and fitting for the gameplay, while others find it repetitive and lacking variety, leading many to mute it in favor of their own playlists. Although there are standout tracks, the limited selection often results in the same songs playing repeatedly, which can detract from the overall experience. Overall, while some enjoy the music, many players feel it does not enhance the game sufficiently and prefer to listen to their own choices.

    • “The soundtrack is top class and the physics are as good as they have always been.”
    • “The stages were fun, the soundtrack was great, and this game helped remove the sour taste Trials of the Blood Dragon left in my mouth.”
    • “Fantastic courses and a great soundtrack to match up with the gameplay.”
    • “The soundtrack in this game is like 15 minutes long; I would hear the same songs multiple times in the same 2-hour play session.”
    • “Music gets old fast and I ended up muting the music after a few hours.”
    • “The list of music is also pretty awful and the list of songs is pretty short, so you'll hear the same mish-mash of genres over and over.”
  • graphics96 mentions

The graphics in Trials Rising receive a generally positive reception, with many players praising the game's vibrant visuals and detailed track designs, which are considered some of the best in the series. However, some users note that the graphics do not represent a significant upgrade from previous titles and mention issues with optimization and performance, particularly on certain hardware configurations. Overall, while the aesthetics are appreciated, technical problems can detract from the experience for some players.

    • “The graphics are amazing and the gameplay is also.”
    • “Graphics are great and Ubisoft has outdone themselves again.”
    • “This game is amazing, like the other Trials games, I am loving this game, especially the fact that the graphics are beautiful and my PC still runs it at 1080p 60 fps ultra settings.”
    • “Visuals were aged especially for 2019 because it seems they couldn't decide on realism or cartoony.”
    • “The graphics are no better than that of 2012's Trials Evolution.”
    • “Due to GPU-related issues (integrated GPU and my NVIDIA GTX 1060), the game ran at either 20fps or crashed when I tried to change any graphics-related settings.”
  • grinding92 mentions

The grinding aspect of the game has received mixed reviews, with many players finding the progression system tedious and overly reliant on repetitive tasks to unlock new content. While some enjoy the challenge and see grinding as a natural part of gameplay, others criticize it for detracting from the overall experience, particularly due to the need to complete contracts for XP to access higher difficulty tracks. Overall, the consensus suggests that while the game offers enjoyable mechanics and tracks, the grinding can feel excessive and frustrating, especially for those seeking a more streamlined progression.

    • “Many tracks are designed with specific bikes in mind, so if you haven't spent time grinding to level 42 to unlock the Mantis, then you won't have the 'recommended' gear. Some stages just don't work, and even with the right setup, there are still many others that are frustrating as hell.”
    • “The gameplay has shifted away from competitiveness and personal achievement toward obtaining superficial rewards for simple and tedious accomplishments, and even that system doesn't work right.”
    • “Progression is no longer tied to player skill or completing all tracks of a certain difficulty; it solely relies on grinding repetitive contracts to obtain arbitrary levels in order to reach a set point where harder tracks will unlock at specific levels.”
  • monetization64 mentions

The monetization in *Trials Rising* has been widely criticized for being overly aggressive, with numerous microtransactions and loot boxes that lock significant content behind paywalls. Many players feel that these practices detract from the core gameplay experience, turning what could be a great game into a cash grab. While some users report being able to ignore the monetization, the general consensus is that it significantly hampers the enjoyment of the game.

    • “While the graphics and general gameplay mechanics are great, the monetization and progression this game has just puts it down.”
    • “I do not mind microtransactions, if they are cosmetic.”
    • “As for the loot boxes/microtransactions: you get so much in-game currency just by playing the game that buying desirable cosmetics has not been a problem, (yet).”
    • “Even the gold edition is missing content which is locked behind microtransactions.”
    • “Trials Rising is another solid trials game that's hampered by an aggressively stupid monetization model that locks a significant portion of the game behind a thick wall of 'acorns' that can only be purchased with real-world money.”
    • “This is probably the worst case of monetization I have ever seen in any game; AAA, indie, or free-to-play.”
  • optimization57 mentions

The game's optimization has been widely criticized, with many players experiencing significant performance issues such as stuttering, freezing, and crashes, even on high-end PCs. Despite some users managing to achieve stable frame rates, the overall consensus is that the game is poorly optimized for PC, leading to a frustrating experience for many. While there are hopes for future patches to address these issues, the current state of optimization detracts from the gameplay experience.

    • “Trials Rising is easily my favorite Trials game to date with the amount and variety of the tracks, the types of bikes, and the knowledge gained from actually starting to understand the advanced techniques, even despite its shortcomings in optimization and overall campaign structure.”
    • “I myself have a 1060 6GB graphics card and an i7 7700K processor (not overclocked or anything, got it on sale) and run the game perfectly fine on 1080p max settings.”
    • “Performance is solid.”
    • “Can't play the game because of stuttering and freezing issues.”
    • “The game is poorly optimized.”
    • “Terrible PC port with bad performance, micro-stuttering, and screen tearing on high-end PCs, capped at 60 fps because the developers are unable to port their game to a modern engine.”
  • stability36 mentions

The game's stability is widely criticized, with many players reporting frequent bugs, stuttering, and crashes, particularly when launching through Steam or using Ubisoft Connect. Troubleshooting efforts often yield little improvement, leading to a frustrating experience, especially in multiplayer modes. While some users have managed to play without issues, the overall consensus is that the game suffers from significant stability problems that detract from its potential enjoyment.

    • “Every other game runs great on max settings.”
    • “No noticeable slowdown for me; it runs great with every setting maxed out.”
    • “The game is great but even after 5 years it is horribly buggy.”
    • “But this game suffers from far too frequent slow-downs and even complete freezes that can last several seconds.”
    • “It poses the possibility to be such a great game, though it's not been executed correctly and should still be classed as a beta stage game given the horrendous amount of glitches/bugs present.”
  • story36 mentions

The story mode of the game has received mixed reviews, with many players finding it grindy and tedious due to the requirement to complete numerous side missions to progress. While some appreciate the added replayability and optional challenges, others feel that the convoluted navigation and mission structure detract from the overall experience, making it less enjoyable than previous iterations. Overall, the story mode is seen as a significant departure from the straightforward progression of earlier games, leading to frustration among players.

    • “The single player is littered with missions for each track; these missions give you tasks like doing flips, driving on fire, or driving on one wheel. They are optional, so you can skip them if you want to focus purely on medals.”
    • “Many of the courses are even designed as 'motocross' style hump and jump races where you are pitted against three other AI characters and have to get first place to advance through the story.”
    • “The main 'race' tab does not automatically direct you to the next available mission, which can make navigation a bit cumbersome.”
    • “The story mode is kind of grindy and boring, and the whole Ubisoft software thing is a bit of a pain.”
    • “The 'story mode' grind is as bad as the reviews say, but let's go into detail.”
    • “Have to grind through story to get levels rather than the old-fashioned way of 'you beat all hards you unlock extreme... it doesn't matter if you're 1st in the world on all tracks if you're not a high enough level, you won't unlock the next difficulty.”
  • replayability25 mentions

The game boasts exceptional replayability, driven by its competitive multiplayer mode, diverse environments, and a robust track editor that allows for endless user-generated content. Players appreciate the addition of contracts and challenges that enhance replay value, while the community's contributions ensure a vast array of custom tracks, making it possible to enjoy thousands of hours of gameplay. However, some players express concerns about the balance between accessibility for new players and the challenge desired by seasoned veterans.

    • “The game's competitive multiplayer mode, diverse environments, and robust track editor provide endless replayability and fun.”
    • “Thanks to the community, Trials Rising has tons of user-created levels, thus the game is infinitely replayable.”
    • “There's also an expansive campaign with endless replayability thanks to the large variety of tracks combined with contracts, challenges, supercross events, and more!”
    • “I like the idea of adding missions onto older levels for replayability sake, but viewing them and shifting between them is also made needlessly difficult.”
    • “Having contracts is not a bad idea at all, it adds a lot of replay value to the game but it should not be a wall that prevents progression and instead a feature that keeps players coming back after beating all the maps.”
    • “The fact I will actually take more than one week to finish a game plus the replayability value in here through the multiplayer modes is absolutely insane.”
  • humor14 mentions

The humor in the game is characterized by its dark comedic elements and quirky physics, which lead to hilarious moments, especially during character failures. Players appreciate the light-hearted tutorials and funny gestures, while the game's challenging nature adds to the comedic experience. Overall, the humor is a significant highlight, making the game enjoyable and entertaining.

    • “Hilarious and fun quick quirky arcade game.”
    • “It is tough, it is challenging and it is hilarious, glad to have this awesome game in my library.”
    • “Trials Fusion is back to being a fun game and in my session I had a buttery smooth performance at max settings; however, I did experience some quite hilarious physics glitches, none were game-breaking as they happened after crashing or bailing, but this is a really fun game and is highly recommended.”
  • atmosphere4 mentions

The atmosphere of the game has received mixed reviews; while some players appreciate the varied and immersive environments that enhance the gameplay experience, others feel that the removal of the original gritty tone has diminished the overall character and appeal, catering too much to a broader audience at the expense of long-time fans.

    • “The old gritty tone and atmosphere suited the adrenaline junkie gameplay perfectly.”
    • “Physics-based, with a simple task to control a motorcycle trials rider through obstacles-filled 2.5D varied global courses, comes with nice ideas and wonderful atmospheres from worldwide locations.”
    • “I greatly appreciate the atmosphere of the levels in this game.”
    • “Most importantly - the tracks are fun, flow perfectly, and are really satisfying to master... but the overall atmosphere of the game has been completely destroyed.”
    • “The old gritty tone and atmosphere suited the adrenaline junkie gameplay perfectly, but they decided to rip all of the character out of the game in order to cater to 'everyone', instead of their long-term fans.”
  • emotional2 mentions

The emotional aspect of the game is characterized by a sense of frustration and persistence, as players liken their experiences to repeatedly touching a hot plate despite the pain, indicating a strong desire to overcome challenges. However, technical issues such as engine performance and hitbox inaccuracies contribute to this frustration, detracting from the overall emotional engagement.
