Disney Speedstorm Game Cover
Disney Speedstorm is a game that I can see myself returning to, both for the new seasons and to dive into high-action races with my favorite characters.

Disney Speedstorm is a multiplayer racing game featuring Disney characters such as Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck. The Standard Founder's Pack includes early access to the game, additional racer unlocks, in-game currency, and exclusive founder's items. Players can use tokens to purchase items from the shop, obtain the Golden Pass, and more. Note that some characters, like Baloo and Belle, can be unlocked immediately using the credits.

  • gameplay502 mentions

The gameplay of Disney Speedstorm is generally praised for its tight controls, engaging mechanics, and fast-paced racing experience, often compared favorably to other kart racers like Mario Kart. However, many players express frustration with the heavy reliance on microtransactions and gacha mechanics, which can hinder progression and create an uneven playing field, detracting from the overall enjoyment. While the core gameplay is fun and offers a variety of characters and tracks, the monetization strategies have led to significant criticism, overshadowing the game's potential.

    • “Disney Speedstorm combines beloved Disney characters with thrilling kart racing, offering a fun and chaotic gameplay experience.”
    • “The gameplay is actually great and the racing aspect is amazingly fun!”
    • “The mechanics work well and are well polished, and there's a lot of variety in characters, powers, and maps.”
    • “Fun core gameplay ruined by greedy microtransactions.”
    • “The optimization is terrible, some character models are awful, the gameplay is repetitive, the progression system is bad, there’s little playability, but there's a lot of microtransactions.”
    • “The gameplay has become chaotic, especially with character leveling that requires countless hours of grinding.”
  • music313 mentions

The music in the game has received widespread acclaim, with many reviewers praising its energetic remixes of classic Disney songs that enhance the racing experience. The soundtrack is described as "bangers" and "absolute fire," contributing significantly to the game's nostalgic and immersive atmosphere. While some critiques mention a few tracks may not resonate with everyone, the overall consensus is that the music is a standout feature, making it a joy to race while listening to these upbeat adaptations.

    • “The soundtrack is amazing, featuring remixes of classic Disney tunes.”
    • “The music, tracks, gameplay, all of that is great.”
    • “Perhaps the only good thing I could say about this game are the cutesy EDM remixes of classic songs from the various films, though the quality and effort of these remixes will vary from one to the next, and you can freely find these songs online, particularly YouTube.”
    • “The music sounds like they grabbed a random public domain loop from a Disney attraction or TV special.”
    • “The music is by far and above the highlight of this game; every track I find myself jamming out to the music more than paying attention to the race.”
  • monetization295 mentions

The monetization in "Disney Speedstorm" has been widely criticized for being excessively aggressive and predatory, with many players labeling it as a pay-to-win model. The game is filled with microtransactions, loot boxes, and a convoluted progression system that often requires significant financial investment to unlock characters and upgrades, leading to frustration among both casual and free-to-play gamers. While some players find enjoyment in the core gameplay, the overwhelming focus on monetization detracts from the overall experience, making it feel more like a cash grab than a well-rounded game.

    • “A lot of microtransactions but not needed.”
    • “Decent game and while the microtransactions and boxes are plenty, there is a good amount of content you just unlock from playing; you don't have to spend anything on this game.”
    • “If you ignore the microtransactions, and the fact that some characters just don't have voice lines for some reason, this is a surprisingly fun kart racer with absolute banger music!”
    • “It's not even f2p friendly either... it's just filled with monetization and the worst part is, that it's pay-to-win.”
    • “The game is filled with microtransactions and the devs have been making it worse and harder to keep playing each season.”
    • “The monetization of this game is the worst I've seen in any game I've ever played.”
  • graphics176 mentions

The graphics in the game have received widespread acclaim, with many reviewers praising their vibrant, stunning visuals and detailed character designs that capture the Disney aesthetic. Players appreciate the smooth animations and well-crafted environments, which enhance the overall racing experience. However, some critiques mention that while the graphics are impressive, they can sometimes feel overly flashy or reminiscent of mobile games.

    • “Amazing graphics (Disney style), great playability.”
    • “The graphics are sharp and colorful, and the overall experience is satisfying for sure.”
    • “With that in mind, the graphics in Disney Speedstorm are absolutely stunning, with bright, vivid colors and intricate designs that really bring each track to life.”
    • “They try to hide behind cheap flashy aesthetics, but we can see through the maxed out saturation slider.”
    • “It's really easy even with all the assists off, the mechanics are not deep and don't really complement each other in a way that creates a fun and exciting racing experience, and the graphics are subpar.”
    • “The graphics are good too but sadly I encountered one or two crashes during gameplay.”
  • grinding146 mentions

The game's grinding mechanics are a significant point of contention among players, with many describing the progression system as excessively tedious and time-consuming. While some players find enjoyment in the grind and believe it can be managed without spending money, others criticize it for being a barrier to fun, often feeling forced to engage in repetitive tasks to unlock characters and upgrades. Overall, the consensus is that while the gameplay can be enjoyable, the heavy reliance on grinding and microtransactions detracts from the overall experience.

    • “Leveling up characters to win races and unlock more characters isn't as tedious as in other games; I think you can absolutely get all the characters and have a fun time without spending any money on the game, but if you want every character, you'll have to grind quite a bit – which is pretty standard for any free-to-play game.”
    • “When you're not grinding and gambling every day, you're missing out on some kind of progression.”
    • “This game relies so much on grinding, spending real-life money, and having a million different confusing currencies that it's ridiculously hard to ignore.”
    • “Earning shards and the in-game currency will require too much grinding, therefore ruining a decent gaming experience.”
    • “Unfortunately, it has become extremely grindy since becoming free-to-play because they want to slow down progression so that you open your wallet to speed things up.”
  • story111 mentions

The game's story aspect is largely criticized for its lack of depth and engagement, with many players noting that there is essentially no narrative to follow. While there are seasonal story events and missions that require specific characters, these often feel restrictive and are tied to a paywall, leading to frustration among players. Overall, the absence of a cohesive story detracts from the experience, making it feel more like a grind for character upgrades rather than an immersive journey.

    • “The racing tracks are beautifully designed, featuring iconic locations from movies such as 'Toy Story,' 'Frozen,' and 'Cars.' Each character comes with their own unique abilities and special moves, adding a layer of strategy to the races as you compete for the top spot.”
    • “There's a couple of different online race modes, as well as a ton of 'story quests' that take the form of various challenge races - standard races, time trials, elimination modes, ones where you need to play as a certain character, ones with missions to perform a certain number of stuns or use a number of items, etc. There's a lot of variety, and they seem like a great way to learn the mechanics, as well as start unlocking some characters and leveling them up!”
    • “On top of that, in addition to your standard daily and weekly rotation of battle pass challenges to complete for progress, there seems to be a system in place for a seasonal story mode with challenges similar to the base game's story quest with tons and tons of time trials and objectives to complete to earn experience on the pass even as a solo player, or someone still learning and gearing up.”
    • “There isn't even a story mode to make it all worth it.”
    • “The lack of any attempt at storytelling is a missed opportunity.”
    • “Pay to win, lack of a story mode (or just a story in general) and infrequent collision issues.”
  • humor32 mentions

The humor in the game is widely praised, with players finding it genuinely funny and entertaining, particularly due to the quirky character interactions and amusing in-game mechanics. Many reviews highlight the comedic elements of the racing experience, including humorous voiceovers and character designs, while some also note the irony in the game's monetization strategies and technical issues, which add an unexpected layer of humor. Overall, the game successfully combines fun gameplay with a lighthearted tone, making it enjoyable to play with friends.

    • “I'm not kidding, I was laughing out loud the first time I played this when I was reading all the currencies, where they come from, and what they expected me to give them in order to have a character capable of winning a race.”
    • “Reminds me a lot of the old racing games like Crash Team Racing and Mario Kart with fun characters and funny banter while racing.”
    • “I also recommend playing with sound because the voice overs during play as various things happen are often hilarious.”
  • optimization31 mentions

Overall, the game's optimization receives mixed reviews; while many players praise its performance across various platforms, including the Steam Deck, others report significant issues such as extreme stuttering and poor character model quality. Some users highlight that the game runs well even on low-end hardware, but concerns about microtransactions and pay-to-win mechanics overshadow the positive aspects of optimization. Despite some loading delays, the game is generally considered polished with good graphics and minimal bugs.

    • “The game itself is fun and well optimized for all platforms.”
    • “The performance on Steam Deck is great, and the game looks better than on every other platform I played it on.”
    • “It's polished, it's filled with content, barely any bugs or performance issues, and no roadmap.”
    • “The optimization is terrible; some character models are awful, the gameplay is repetitive, the progression system is bad, there’s little playability, but there's a lot of microtransactions.”
    • “Unfortunately, ranked multiplayer is not equalized, and character level/upgrades play a very big part in performance, especially speed.”
    • “Racers and their performance upgrades are locked behind pay-to-skip grinds.”
  • stability30 mentions

The game's stability has received mixed reviews, with many players reporting frequent glitches, loading issues, and crashes, particularly on platforms like the Switch and Steam Deck. While some users appreciate the game's fun elements and graphics, the overall consensus indicates that the numerous bugs and balancing problems significantly detract from the experience, making it difficult to recommend without reservations. Despite ongoing updates from the developers, many feel that the game still requires substantial improvements in stability and performance.

    • “A fun racing game, great graphics, gameplay is smooth and bug free.”
    • “The game looks good and runs great on a multitude of platforms with no issues or hiccups. It's also extremely fun and goes toe to toe with any other top-tier kart game on the market.”
    • “Technically, I also had no issues so far, and it runs great on the Steam Deck.”
    • “While the game may now take over a minute to load on the Switch (I know, I timed it), at least it does load—with all its freezes and glitches.”
    • “Downloaded, did the buggy tutorial (car moving on its own and not being responsive, doing doughnuts and crap), got to the first 'race' the game was a buggy mess so I alt + F4.”
    • “The most frustrating parts of the gameplay are the glitches and sheer randomness.”
  • emotional7 mentions

The emotional aspect of the game elicits mixed feelings among players, with some expressing nostalgia and joy reminiscent of childhood experiences, while others feel frustrated and disheartened by the game's pay-to-win model and predatory practices. Despite moments of heartfelt gameplay and engaging character interactions, the overall sentiment leans towards disappointment due to the game's consumer-hostile environment.

    • “Mickey, visibly upset and very emotional, responds to the judge: 'No, no, no, your honor.'”
    • “A part from the incredible gameplay (best I've ever experienced with a karting game), fantastic music (seriously, play with a Woojer vest, and it's a game changer), fun tracks, interesting characters, and specific animations and sound bites for every character (refreshing from the cut-and-paste that you see everywhere else)... I actually want to share my 'moment' of gameplay that made me feel like a kid (which, I think, whether we're aware of it or not, we all long to have a game do that to us).”
    • “If you've read this over-the-top emotional/nostalgic review, thank you.”
  • replayability7 mentions

The game's replayability is enhanced by its solid framework and character diversity, which encourages different play styles and keeps the experience fresh. However, some players feel that the reliance on daily missions and the need for in-game purchases can hinder long-term engagement. Regular updates and unlockable content contribute positively to replay value, making it a fun option for players seeking ongoing challenges.

    • “Of course, it's framed by the free-to-play currencies and levels of progression, but beneath it all there's a solid and entirely replayable, simple but effective framework.”
    • “Finally, I love that the class and character you pick actually correlates to a play style as opposed to being purely cosmetic, which makes the game much more replayable and a lot more exciting when a new character drops that I can earn by simply playing events.”
    • “Regular updates and unlockable content add to the game's replay value, making it a fantastic choice for endless fun.”
    • “If you want more people to play this game, please at least make it more playable for those who do not want to pay.”
    • “Finally, I love that the class and character you pick actually correlates to a play style as opposed to cosmetic, as it makes the game much more replayable and a heck of a lot more exciting when a new character drops that I can get by simply playing events.”
    • “Each offering plenty of rewards and replayability.”
  • atmosphere4 mentions

The game's atmosphere is highly praised for its visually appealing graphics and well-designed tracks, creating an immersive Disney-like experience. The characters, locations, and music contribute significantly to this ambiance, with the soundtrack enhancing the overall atmosphere of adventure and excitement.

    • “The actual game has a fantastic Disney atmosphere: the characters, locations, and music are all very well done.”
    • “The soundtrack perfectly complements the game's atmosphere, enhancing the overall experience.”
  • character development1 mentions

While the game offers a thrilling racing experience with impressive graphics and character design, it falls short in narrative depth and character development when compared to titles like Mario Kart.
