The story of "Trepang2" is generally considered to be weak and disjointed, with many players noting its predictability and lack of depth. While some appreciate the intriguing elements and environmental storytelling, the overall narrative is often seen as a mere backdrop for the game's fast-paced action and gameplay. The campaign is relatively short, typically lasting around 4 to 8 hours, and many side missions feel repetitive, primarily consisting of wave-based combat scenarios.
“The only bad thing about this game is just how criminally short it is -- despite the obvious influences within the story, I still feel it had a very creative spin to it.”
“Put another way, if you’re looking for an FPS that decides to go back to the forgotten virtues of pacing, gameplay, story, and fun, then Trepang2 is a dream (or nightmare, if the early story is any indication) come true.”
“Trepang2 offers a gripping storyline that unfolds as players progress through the game.”
“The story is just kinda there.”
“The main campaign is very short, but with 6 side missions, 20 horde maps, weapon parts to find and customize your guns, and an unlockable cheat menu, you'll be replaying and checking everything out this game has to offer as you unlock everything and master the combat.”
“The story is lacking and the campaign is a bit short, but it looks good, sounds great, and the gameplay is wild.”

The gameplay of *Trepang2* has been widely praised for its fast-paced, adrenaline-fueled action, combining elements from classic shooters like *F.E.A.R.* and *Doom*. Players appreciate the engaging mechanics, such as bullet time and cloaking, which enhance the combat experience, making it feel dynamic and satisfying. However, some critiques highlight the repetitiveness of missions and the simplistic nature of the gameplay, suggesting that while the mechanics are solid, the overall experience can become monotonous over time.
“The adrenaline rush never got old, and though the mechanics are really simple for an arena shooter, the beautiful arenas and their thoughtful layouts and designs, as well as the different enemy types, weapons, and utility items keeps the combat fresh through every single encounter.”
“Trepang2 is an electrifying first-person shooter that delivers a visceral and exhilarating experience, expertly blending intense action, engaging mechanics, and a compelling narrative.”
“The gameplay is stellar, music is banging, story is interesting, and the game is very replayable not to mention there are unlockable cheats like doom eternal and a sandbox mode like forge mode where you can play around with the ai.”
“I beat the campaign and every side mission and at no point during any horror sections did I feel any amount of fear, just an immense boredom and hope that the gameplay will start again.”
“Unfortunately it's just way too overreliant on gameplay tropes that are getting really tiresome at this point, namely: a ridiculous number of infinitely respawning dumb enemies, who will hit you with shotgun from across a football field but will somehow magically only deal 1% damage as long as you're running around in circles like a poisoned rat, and forcing the player to exactly one playstyle - in this case, just slide tackle everyone to death.”
“The wave-based gameplay is mind-numbingly repetitive, especially the side missions; it's not rare to have 5-6 flashing grenade icons on the screen in all cardinal directions at the same time.”

The music in "Trepang2" has received widespread acclaim, with many reviewers praising its heavy metal soundtrack that enhances the adrenaline-fueled gameplay and complements the intense combat sequences. Composed by Brandon McKagan, the soundtrack is often compared to iconic scores from games like "Doom," effectively elevating the overall experience. However, some players noted issues with audio mixing, where the music could overpower sound effects and dialogue, detracting from immersion at times.
“The audio design further amplifies the atmosphere, with a gripping soundtrack that heightens tension and excitement during gameplay.”
“The game excels in its sound design, with a heavy metal soundtrack that perfectly complements the high-stakes combat, keeping adrenaline levels high and making each fight feel even more exhilarating.”
“The soundtrack is one of the greatest soundtracks I have ever heard in a shooter game, even just any game in general.”
“The music is overpowering and unbalanced; the 'crunchy guitar' seems mismatched for the game, and despite its aim to add gritty atmosphere, it just becomes an annoying distraction.”
“The music is aggressive and repetitive, and doesn't serve to set much of an atmosphere. The voice acting and script writing are subpar at best, and at worst are reminiscent of Ironfall: Invasion.”
“The music in this game is 1/10.”

The graphics of Trepang² have received widespread acclaim for their stunning visuals and atmospheric design, effectively complementing the game's dark and gritty tone. Players appreciate the detailed environments, character models, and dynamic lighting, although some have noted issues with film grain and oversharpening effects. Overall, the game is praised for its impressive graphical fidelity, especially considering its indie development background, making it a standout in the genre.
“The game employs a stylish aesthetic that seamlessly combines realism with artistic flair.”
“The graphics are beautiful on the epic settings, making the game shine even more in its technical and visual elements.”
“The character models, weapon designs, and environments are all well-crafted, with a gritty, realistic aesthetic that complements the game’s dark tone.”
“The graphics and gameplay mechanics seem much more dated than its 2023 release date - honestly surprised when I checked the date after playing it for a while as I assumed it would be at least a decade old.”
“The environments look extremely budget-designed, and the general aesthetic is pretty lackluster.”
“The graphics are terrible and look like Unity-bought models with visually different art styles between some objects and flat lighting, with that in-engine sheen that makes everything look pretty poor.”

The atmosphere in "Trepang2" is frequently praised for its dark, gritty tone, enhanced by impressive visuals and a gripping soundtrack that heightens tension during gameplay. While many players appreciate the immersive environments and the blend of horror elements, some critiques highlight inconsistencies, such as underwhelming jump scares and a lack of unique atmosphere compared to its inspirations like the "F.E.A.R." series. Overall, the game successfully creates a captivating atmosphere that complements its fast-paced action and engaging gunplay.
“The atmosphere is dark and gritty (including some horror aspects), which fits the game’s tone well, and both the visuals and sound design help pull you into that world.”
“The audio design further amplifies the atmosphere, with a gripping soundtrack that heightens tension and excitement during gameplay.”
“The atmosphere, inspired gameplay mechanics, and thrilling combat more than make up for its disappointing story.”
“There is zero atmosphere in this.”
“You just start sprinting through everything, because there just aren't any actual enemies waiting in the dark for you, just more scripted jumpscares and the general atmosphere of the game is not good enough to mask this.”
“This game lacks the atmosphere of fear entirely, which was one of the reasons why firefights were so good.”

The game offers significant replayability through various difficulty levels, unlockable cheats, and engaging combat modes, including a combat simulator and horde challenges. While the main campaign is relatively short, averaging around 5-8 hours, players can enjoy extended gameplay by revisiting missions, collecting items, and experimenting with different strategies. Overall, the combination of fun mechanics and diverse replay options makes it a worthwhile experience for players seeking to challenge themselves.
“The game’s design encourages replayability, with various difficulty levels and unlockable content that invites players to return for more challenges.”
“The combat simulator is extremely fun and made for replayability, with the horde gamemode putting you against 20 waves of increasingly difficult enemies, the endless gamemode being exactly that, endless waves of enemies, and sandbox for messing with NPCs and creating your own scenes.”
“The campaign however is quite short, averaging 5-6 hours, but the game still offers good replayability with its combat loop in the combat simulation game mode with plenty of arenas to fight in with various formats to choose from (20 wave horde mode, survival mode [DLC], endless and even a sandbox mode).”
“The side missions are super fun and replayable, but they can get a bit repetitive due to the nature of them, which is either hacking terminals or surviving waves of enemies.”
“The level design is incredibly basic, the 'story' may as well not exist, weapon variety is extremely limited, and there's not much replayability to speak of.”
“It's really short, taking me about 5 and a half hours to complete all of the main and side missions, meaning there's not too much meat on the bones here, although there are cheats and a horde mode available for replay value.”

The humor in the game is widely praised, with players highlighting its comedic elements, such as funny enemy dialogue, absurd physics, and entertaining gameplay mechanics that lead to hilarious moments. Many reviews note that the developers embraced a lighthearted tone, making the game enjoyable and often laugh-out-loud funny, while also incorporating elements of horror and action. Overall, the humor adds a unique charm to the gameplay experience, making it a standout feature for many players.
“This game is hilarious in the best way possible.”
“The physics are hilarious as you can punt enemies into the wall but this also can break the game sometimes.”
“Voice acting is top notch and genuinely made me laugh multiple times, the dialogue is pretty funny in my opinion, you can tell the devs had fun making this.”

Overall, the game's optimization has received mixed feedback, with many players praising its smooth performance and stability across various hardware configurations, including older graphics cards. However, some users reported significant stuttering and frame drops during intense combat scenarios, suggesting that while the game is generally well-optimized, it may struggle under certain conditions. Despite these issues, the majority of reviews highlight the game's impressive optimization relative to its graphical quality, making it a solid choice for players seeking a fast-paced shooter experience.
“Despite the downsides, it is an incredibly well-optimized game.”
“The optimization is incredible, keeping a steady and high framerate throughout the chaos (tested on both a 1070 & a 4070).”
“Easily the best optimized shooter that's come out in recent years.”
“However, I keep getting this stuttering issue where my frames dip into the single digits during combat, and while it definitely makes combat more challenging, it's not the kind of challenge I'm looking for.”
“I don't know if it's the engine's fault or if this game is just really poorly optimized, but any crowd larger than 3 people shooting turns my game into a slideshow, so I'll be refunding this.”
“You can tell this was meant to be a cross-platform/console game rather than a straight-up optimized PC shooter.”

The monetization aspect of the game is generally well-received, with no microtransactions or additional costs beyond the initial purchase, which many players appreciate as a return to classic gaming values. However, the decision to lock the aim-down-sights (ADS) feature behind a "cheat" system has drawn significant criticism, as it limits gameplay options and frustrates players who expect this mechanic to be standard in first-person shooters. Overall, while the absence of microtransactions is a positive, the restrictive ADS implementation detracts from the overall experience for many users.
“A wonderful reminder of what things were like before microtransactions and lootboxes!”
“There is a full cheats menu that you unlock through progress and character customization with no additional monetization.”
“No microtransactions, battle passes, or generally scummy business practices to be seen.”
“I'm being a bit petty but once I discovered the developers took the time to include aim down sights (ADS) for all guns but consider it a 'cheat' (which locks the progress difficulty to easy, affecting achievements and progress), I decided this game was not worth my time.”
“Shame about how ADS isn't included by default and requires a cheat.”
“This may not be a big problem for some people, but for me, not having ADS has been a real letdown. The game already has some great gameplay, but it's sad because of these decisions to lock ADS away. Just don't have it at all if you don't want people to use it; then lock it away and make people work for a simple function in other FPS titles.”

The grinding aspect of the game has received significant criticism, with many players finding the mission selection, lengthy walking segments, and repetitive combat tedious and frustrating. While some enjoy the gameplay initially, it quickly becomes monotonous, especially when attempting to unlock achievements or cosmetic rewards that require extensive replaying of missions at higher difficulties. Overall, the game is seen as fun but marred by its grindy elements, leading to a less enjoyable experience over time.
“You'll need a second life for grinding.”

“You'll need a second life for grinding.”
“There's so much downtime, tiresome walking sections, forced dialogue and cutscenes with random elevators to ride on from section to section, waiting for doors to open, a separate room for choosing missions and on top of that going to a helipad to launch said missions... why not just make a straight to the point action-arcade game instead of this tedious and cinematic tech-demo?”
“Where the story is emphasized, despite it being horrendously stupid and poorly written… the game is missions based, with a home base you return to, and the whole process of resupplying and selecting missions is incredibly tedious, with some of the expected quality of life elements just being absent.”
“The relentless spawns and amount of enemies that you have to face turns the gameplay into a tedious rush instead of cool fights.”

However, there are frequent mentions of minor bugs and glitches, particularly related to audio, physics, and UI, which can detract from the experience. While some players encountered frustrating issues, the majority found the game enjoyable and stable enough to overlook these imperfections.
“I experienced no glitches in the whole campaign; the whole thing was just awesome.”
“The game runs great with essentially zero stutters or bugs.”
“Pros: excellent gameplay, good graphics, relatively stable and bug free, the real sequel to F.E.A.”
“Horrendously buggy audio with loud, headache-inducing crackles after explosions and most unsuppressed gunshots, which was an immediate turn off.”
“Far too short and annoyingly buggy.”
“Excessive loading times, too buggy; it took about two hours to get the game to run properly and detect the controller.”

However, some reviewers note a lack of deep emotional investment in the story, suggesting that while the gameplay is exhilarating, it may not fully connect on a narrative level.
“This game also made me feel emotions that I was really unprepared for when I went into it.”
“Trepang2 is a story of hope, love, and a heartfelt exploration of love during times of terrific horror (in this case, late 18th century London).”

Trepang2 Review - A Furious Though Overly Brief Ode To F.E.A.R That Still Satisfies
I never wanted Trepang2 to end and that was the problem - it ended much, much too quickly for my tastes. While it lasted through, Trepang2 was a glossy, flying-kicking, baseball-sliding, slow-motion neck snapping first-person shooter extravaganza that provided me with some of the most satisfying shooting I've seen all year. More of this, please.
