Tomb Raider I-III Remastered

Aspyr really pulled through in making a superb package for new explorers and old adventurers to dig into, but I still have no clue why there is no platinum trophies on the PS5 edition?!

  • Faithful remaster of the original trilogy that preserves the classic gameplay and level design.
  • Option to switch seamlessly between original and remastered graphics enhances nostalgia and visual appeal.
  • Includes quality-of-life improvements such as modern controls, save-anytime functionality, DLC expansions, and a photo mode.
  • Recent update introduced numerous game-breaking bugs, save corruption, and technical issues affecting gameplay.
  • New outfits and textures appear to be low quality and AI-generated, widely criticized for damaging the game’s aesthetic.
  • Controls remain clunky and problematic, with modern controls feeling imprecise and requiring tank controls for some platforming sequences.
  • graphics

    1,732 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The remaster features significantly improved graphics with higher resolution textures, enhanced lighting, and detailed character models that respect the original art style while modernizing visuals. A standout feature is the seamless on-the-fly toggle between classic (original) and remastered graphics, allowing players to appreciate both the nostalgic charm and enhanced visuals, though the classic mode is capped at 30fps, which some find limiting. Despite occasional lighting issues in the remastered mode that can make key items hard to see, overall the graphics upgrade breathes new life into the games while preserving their iconic look.

    • “The ability to toggle between old and new visuals in real time emphasizes how much work went into preserving what made these games special, while subtly enhancing immersion.”
    • “The updated visuals respect the original art style and atmosphere, and the option to switch between classic and remastered graphics is a great feature for long-time fans.”
    • “The remastered graphics breathe new life into the environments, making them more vibrant and immersive while still allowing players to switch back to the original graphics for that authentic retro experience.”
    • “The retro graphics mode is locked behind 30 fps, the modern control scheme is bad (original controls are the default thankfully) and the camera in remaster graphics mode is wonky as hell.”
    • “The remastered graphics are well done, but more importantly, they always feel like they were trying to bring them to a higher resolution, rather than leave their own mark on the game.”
    • “The new graphics are way too dark and you can't change anything as there's no settings, so I've had to keep changing from old to new just to try and see what's happening.”
  • gameplay

    407 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The Tomb Raider I-III remastered collection preserves the core gameplay and level design of the originals while adding quality-of-life improvements and modern control options, though the classic "tank" controls remain preferred for authenticity and precision. While the updated visuals and smoother frame rates enhance immersion, many reviewers find the gameplay mechanics, including platforming and jumping, feel dated and occasionally clunky, posing a challenge especially to newcomers. Despite some bugs and camera issues, the remaster is praised for maintaining the franchise’s classic, exploration-focused gameplay that rewards patience and puzzle-solving, appealing primarily to fans of the original 90s adventure style.

    • “Gameplay with modern controls is great and I love playing on NG+ for all 3 because it makes them feel like proper challenges again.”
    • “As a longtime fan of the TR franchise, I was very satisfied with the way these remasters turned out: preserving the classic feel and gameplay of the originals while giving textures and models a modern polish pass.”
    • “In addition to the faithful gameplay and visual enhancements, the inclusion of quality-of-life improvements such as modernized control options and subtle tweaks to the UI further enhance the experience without detracting from the core gameplay.”
    • “The gameplay and controls are fighting tooth and nail to prevent you from enjoying the game.”
    • “The game is now riddled with bugs and broken mechanics and we have heard nothing at all from Aspyr as to when, or even if, these issues will be fixed.”
    • “Gameplay is very outdated with a lot of boring and crazy long backtracking and trying to find a random entrance in a world of walls with the same textures.”
  • stability

    143 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The remastered trilogy runs well on modern hardware and retains many classic quirks, but is currently plagued by numerous bugs and glitches—including texture issues, audio problems, and game-breaking glitches—exacerbated by poorly received updates adding more instability and low-quality assets. While some original glitches are preserved intentionally as nostalgic features, recent patches have introduced new problems that have marred playability and comfort, leading to mixed reactions regarding overall stability. Players often recommend sticking to tank controls due to the buggy nature of the modern control scheme.

    • “The remaster itself is done with obvious care: the graphics toggle between old and new is seamless, and it runs great without needing any mods or config tweaks to get going.”
    • “I also installed this on a portable mini PC running on just an N100 and the game runs great on that, so it's well optimized.”
    • “The remaster effort is astounding, it's probably the best retro conversion I've ever seen, it looks and runs great and it's fully featured.”
    • “A rushed-out port (surprisingly also made by Aspyr!) with so many bugs and glitches, they had to be patched out, up until a point where they just moved on to the next big thing... and still left plenty of bugs in the game.”
    • “As of 18th March 2026, thanks to the challenge run update, the games have become a dumpster fire filled with bugs and glitches, savegame issues, AI-generated assets, texture issues, and a bunch of new bugs.”
    • “However, all that changed when the publisher Aspyr decided to push a new update that introduced a slew of new bugs and glitches, some of them merely annoying, some of them game-breaking and save-corrupting.”
  • music

    132 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music in these games is widely praised for its nostalgic, atmospheric quality and faithful remastering of classic soundtracks by Nathan McCree, greatly enhancing the exploration and puzzle-solving experience. However, recent updates have introduced numerous bugs causing main menu music to play at inappropriate times, music and subtitle glitches, and audio stuttering, which have negatively impacted the overall immersion and gameplay. Despite these issues, the original soundtrack remains a standout feature that deeply resonates with fans.

    • “The puzzles and the moments when the original soundtrack starts playing as I enter a new area gave me a strong feeling of nostalgia.”
    • “Incredible OST (from Nathan McCree) suits the scenes perfectly, from bright, relaxing music to stressful and creepy atmosphere (the Skidoo theme is a real banger).”
    • “The remastered soundtrack, along with re-recorded voice lines, enhances the overall atmosphere, making the experience feel fresh while still paying homage to the original sound design.”
    • “- The main menu music does not cut out during loading screens or when starting a level where there is no background music (for example, Venice level on TR2, Lara's home on TR3), causing the main menu music to play during gameplay.”
    • “Warning to anyone thinking of buying this game: don't waste your money. Thanks to the last patch, it is so broken it is unplayable. The music is broken; main menu music does not cut out during loading screens or when starting a level (for example Venice level on TR2, Lara's home on TR3). FMV sequence in Lara's home in TR1 no longer plays. There are game crashes, save files getting corrupted, and so many bugs that ruin this game.”
    • “Let me just explain the biggest gripe: no music whatsoever. Sure, there are moments in the game where the music plays, but only for a few minutes. The music is so good and one of the best soundtracks I have heard, but most of what you will hear is just ambience. It is a big disappointment, mostly due to the fact that the music used to play straight off the CD back then; now, the music is not encoded in, unfortunately.”
  • story

    129 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The story of the remastered Tomb Raider classics is generally seen as simple, minimalistic, and reflective of its era, focusing more on exploration and puzzles than deep narrative. While some find it engaging and nostalgic with effective environmental storytelling, others view it as underdeveloped, confusing, or secondary to gameplay. Overall, it remains a charming, iconic adventure that appeals primarily to fans of the original games rather than those expecting modern, story-driven experiences.

    • “The engaging storylines of Tomb Raider I-III are as captivating as ever, weaving tales of ancient mysteries, mythological artifacts, and sinister adversaries.”
    • “The remastered collection not only celebrates the legacy of the franchise but also pays homage to the groundbreaking design and storytelling that made the Tomb Raider series a cultural phenomenon.”
    • “Tr1 was a perfect storm of engaging gameplay, foreboding atmosphere, great exploration, good pacing, and an interesting story.”
    • “There isn’t really a well-written story either, which makes the whole thing even more boring…”
    • “The story doesn't make much sense, and the characters, especially Bartoli, are underdeveloped.”
    • “With a lacking story and clunky controls, I see no reason to revisit these games, unless they're given the Black Mesa re-imagining treatment.”
  • atmosphere

    88 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The atmosphere across the original Tomb Raider trilogy is widely praised for its immersive blend of isolation, mystery, and adventure, effectively enhanced by sound design and distinctive level environments. While remasters have polarized players—some lauding updated visuals and soundtracks for enriching the ambiance without compromising the originals, others criticize changes in lighting and graphics that disrupt the classic mood and immersion. Overall, the series' hallmark atmospheric tension and exploration remain compelling, though certain remaster choices impact the nostalgic vibe differently for fans.

    • “Finally got around to playing these classics for the first time and I completely understand the hype — TR1's atmosphere of lonely, ancient isolation is unlike anything in modern gaming, and TR2's globe-trotting variety kept me hooked right through to the end.”
    • “The atmosphere, the sound, the graphics, all of that was lovingly cared for in these remasters; they are very faithful to the originals and offer a great experience to anyone looking to get into classic Tomb Raider or people who already love classic Tomb Raider.”
    • “Speaking on the games themselves, they are pretty good. The 1st game was actually interesting, creative and enjoyable; it was one of the most important games of that era. The puzzles were amazing, the atmosphere was spot on. Exploring the caves and tombs of Peru, Greece, Egypt and Atlantis was an amazing experience, trust me it really gets crazy on Atlantis, you have to experience it yourself.”
    • “Upscaled graphics (and now the new outfits) are atrocious and obliterate any sense of atmosphere and vibe the core design devs cultivated (this is especially evident with how the underwater lighting effects changed).”
    • “This makes the environment look cheap and incomplete and coupled with several confusing artistic liberties taken that don't seem to understand what the original vision was, it completely screws up the atmosphere these games are known for.”
    • “Ai upscaled textures, missing textures, misaligned textures, tiny/near invisible key items rotated in a way that barely telegraphs what the item actually is to the player, bad modern controls, major lighting changes that ruin the feel and atmosphere the original games give, changes to the geometry for the sake of 'adding detail' that doesn't really make sense to the original level design, weird sound reverb, a terrible camera system that flies around and gives pretty awful angles forcing you to toggle back to original to see properly, etc.”
  • optimization

    53 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The optimization of the remastered games is mixed, with many users praising smooth performance at high frame rates on modern hardware and good compatibility across platforms, including the Steam Deck. However, some report persistent stuttering, frame drops, and performance issues, especially on certain PC configurations and when using legacy visuals locked at 30fps. Overall, while the remaster offers solid optimization for most, occasional bugs and inconsistent frame pacing detract from the experience for some players.

    • “It makes the game so much better and by the looks of it it doesn't cost any performance at all, like I can still play with an iGPU on 4K with 144 fps and even the legacy version now runs with max fps, removing the 30 fps lock is quite awesome.”
    • “Performance on PC is solid, with both classic and remastered modes running smoothly.”
    • “The games run smoothly on current systems, and the ability to swap back to the old graphics on the fly is fantastic!”
    • “Amd/Intel users need not apply, there's a persistent stuttering issue caused by something weird in the rendering pipeline.”
    • “Refunded, stutters like crazy on a high-end PC and it's completely unplayable considering you have to be accurate with moving Lara into position for the most part. I mean the controls I can live with, but when it stutters and you're taking a jump, it's impossible... just makes the game highly irritating and I played the original. Still no patch to fix the performance, not recommended at this point.”
    • “Additionally the performance is weird - I get constant framerate drops, even on a Ryzen 7950x3d and an RTX 4090!”
  • replayability

    48 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The original trilogy offers timeless, high replayability, enhanced significantly by the inclusion of numerous achievements, challenge modes, and DLC content that encourage varied playthroughs and exploration of secrets. Modern controls and quality-of-life improvements further increase accessibility and enjoyment, while the large number of achievements and new game+ modes provide extended depth and motivation for repeated play. Although some design choices like modifiers and certain cosmetic additions received mixed opinions, overall the remasters successfully boost the replay value for both veterans and newcomers.

    • “The original trilogy is widely known and has been played by many over the years, and remains a timeless experience with high replay value that invites repeated playthroughs.”
    • “The inclusion of all expansion levels and secret areas from the gold editions adds considerable content and replayability for veterans and completionists.”
    • “Tons of achievements (almost 300!) add replayability and depth, and a good portion of the achievements require multiple playthroughs to get.”
    • “But the replayability decisions are baffling.”
    • “This is stupid and hurts replay value.”
    • “The modern controls are playable but do cause serious camera issues in some areas.”
  • grinding

    32 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Grinding in these games is often described as tedious and frustrating, with repetitive combat, slow pacing, and monotonous level design contributing to a tiresome experience. While some appreciate the improved save systems and occasional streamlined achievement runs, the overall grind, including platforming and moving objects, tends to detract from enjoyment, especially for new players or those sensitive to repetitive mechanics.

    • “Okay, I saved the worst for last: the most awful thing about these games is moving boxes. Lara is so weak she moves a box only one square at a time, and you have to keep clicking the action button over and over again. It is by far my biggest personal gripe for these games and very annoying, tedious, and just awful.”
    • “All this does is add to the frustration and having to repeat tedious activities over and over.”
    • “Tomb Raider 2 is inferior in my opinion with invasive combat, overly long and tedious level design, and too many trial and error moments.”
  • humor

    27 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The humor in the game often arises from its blend of nostalgic quirks and modern updates, such as amusing graphical contrasts between original and remastered modes, over-the-top cutscenes, and witty writing that highlights the series' charm. Players enjoy funny bugs, nostalgic references, and humorous achievements that add a playful layer to the experience. Overall, the humor enhances the game's appeal by celebrating its classic roots with a lighthearted and self-aware tone.

    • “The cutscenes are hilariously over the top, the story is bonkers and just lets Lara be a badass, and the ability to switch between original and modern graphics at the touch of a button is amazing.”
    • “In-game cutscenes are a joy to watch, as the old animations are still present even with the new graphics, resulting in wacky but funny hand placements and head bobbing.”
    • “There are 269 achievements like beating any of the games with only Lara's pistols or getting 'unreachable' pickups using corner bugs; some of them are just hilarious and full of clever easter eggs.”
  • emotional

    15 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The emotional impact of the remastered games resonates strongly with longtime fans, evoking nostalgia and the original emotional rollercoaster while benefiting from modern visuals. However, newcomers may find the gameplay frustrating and the visuals somewhat dated despite enhancements. The remaster’s faithful preservation of core mechanics is praised, though some AI and texture updates received mixed reactions.

    • “Inspired level design and variety made me feel like the developers cared deeply about their product.”
    • “Revisiting these games from my childhood honestly made me feel like a kid again.”
    • “Playing the remastered collection is like reliving my childhood with modern graphics, grown-up reflexes (sometimes), and the same emotional rollercoaster I signed up for.”
  • monetization

    15 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The monetization of this remastered game is widely criticized as a lazy, cynical cash grab with poor value, lacking effort or soul, especially due to uninspired use of generative AI in content and misleading advertising. However, it does not include microtransactions or intrusive monetization, which some see as a positive aspect. Overall, many feel the price and quality do not justify the purchase.

    • “There are no microtransactions, and the absence of intrusive monetization is a definite plus.”
    • “This 'remaster' is a lazy cash grab, it's as simple as that.”
    • “Although this package should be a welcome remaster package, the price tag for such poor work which includes trick advertising regarding 'modern' controls, cannot be justified.”
    • “Seems to be nothing more than a lazy, cynical cash grab with no effort applied, and certainly doesn't deserve your money.”
